Objectives
THE COURSE PROPOSES GENERAL INTERPRETATIVE SCHEMES OF POWER RELATIONS AND CONFLICTS IN GLOBAL SOCIETY. IT DEVELOPS A COMPARISON OF THE HISTORICAL-POLITICAL ISSUES AND THE NARRATIVE IMAGINARIES THAT HAVE ACCOMPANIED THIS HISTORICAL PROCESS BETWEEN THE GREAT WAR AND THE CURRENT WORLD. THE MODULES ARE PLACED WITHIN A LONG-TERM PERSPECTIVE, TO ALLOW THE DEVELOPMENT OF IN-DEPTH ANALYSES OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, COMPETITION FOR GLOBAL POWER, DYNAMICS AND NARRATIVES OF CONFLICTS.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY EUROPEAN HISTORY IS REQUIRED; AS WELL AS GOOD BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY ITALY.
Contents
THE COURSE AIMS TO UNDERSTAND THE LINES OF DEVELOPMENT OF GLOBAL SOCIETY FROM THE GREAT WAR TO THE PRESENT DAY. THE PREMISE IS PLACED IN THE SEASON OF THE WORLD WARS IN EUROPE AND THEN IN THE WORLD (1911-1949), THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF THE IDEOLOGICAL NARRATIVES AND POLITICAL PROJECTS THAT MARKED GLOBAL HISTORY UNTIL THE FALL OF THE WALL, REACHING IN SOME RESPECTS TO THE PRESENT DAY.
THE DEVELOPMENT FOCUSES ON THE SECOND HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY, WITH THE FORMATION OF A GLOBAL SOCIETY BASED ON COMPETITION BETWEEN CAPITALIST AND COLLECTIVIST DEVELOPMENT MODELS (1949-1981). THE MULTIPLICATION OF NATIONAL PROJECTS IN ASIA AND AFRICA AND THE INVOLVEMENT OF NEW STATES IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS ALSO MULTIPLIED OTHER FORMS OF ETHNIC AND RELIGIOUS CONFLICT.
THE END OF THE COLD WAR BROUGHT TO AN END AND TRANSFORMED THIS PROCESS (1981-2001). IN THIS PHASE IT WILL BE ANALYZED A SEASON MARKED BY THE TRIUMPH OF LIBERAL POLITICAL ORDER AND ECONOMIC UNIFICATION UNDER THE SIGN OF GLOBAL CAPITALISM. THE SUCCESS OF THE USA, THE FORMATION OF THE EUROPEAN UNION AND THE DEFINITIVE CAPITALIST TRANSFORMATION OF CHINA ARE PART OF A SEASON THAT WAS BASED ON A LIBERAL IDEA OF THE REGULATION OF INTERNATIONAL CONFLICTS.
THE TURN OF THE CENTURY WAS SHAKEN BY THE WAR ON TERRORISM AND THE CRISIS OF WESTERN CAPITALISM (2001-2016). IN THE EARLY PART OF THE NEW CENTURY, SOME OF THE ANCIENT FRACTURES THAT BEGAN IN THE FINAL PHASE OF THE COLD WAR RE-EMERGED, MAKING THE FAR EAST AND CENTRAL ASIA THE MAIN TERRAIN FOR GLOBAL CRISIS. THE ECONOMIC CRISIS OF 2008-2013 REPRESENTED THE MOST RADICAL STEP OF THIS MOMENT OF GLOBAL COMPETITION, MARKED BY THE SUCCESS OF ASIAN AUTOCRACY.
THE COURSE FINALLY ANALYZES THE CONTEXT PRODUCED BY THESE INNOVATIONS: RADICAL POPULISM OR AUTOCRATIC CENTRALIZATION, LIBERAL EVOLUTION OR AUTHORITARIAN INNOVATIONS. THESE MODELS DEALT WITH THE PANDEMIC CRISIS OF 2020, WHICH SHOWED A DIRECT CONFRONTATION BETWEEN AUTOCRACY AND DEMOCRACIES IN CRISIS MANAGEMENT, SHIFTING TO HEALTH EFFICIENCY, ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS COMPETITION FOR GLOBAL POWER RELATIONS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE WILL ANALYZE GLOBAL CONTEMPORARY HISTORY AFTER THE COLD WAR, DIVIDING THE MAIN MOMENTS INTO DIFFERENT PHASES AND PASSAGES.
THE COURSE WILL ALSO SEE THE USE OF HISTORICAL AND LITERARY TEXTS TO DEEPEN, WITH READINGS ENTRUSTED TO THE STUDENTS, THE MOST IMPORTANT PASSAGES OF RECENT HISTORY.
Verification of learning
AN ORAL TEST, BASED ON THE COURSE PROGRAMM AND THE TEXTS INDICATED.
Texts
THE PROGRAM WILL BE PRESENTED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE COURSE, ON THE BASIS OF MATERIALS PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER WITH INTEGRATIVE READINGS
