Objectives
1) KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING- THE COURSE “PLANT PHYSIOLOGY” IS AIMED AT INTRODUCING STUDENTS TOWARD THE COMPREHENSION OF THE MAIN MOLECULAR AND PHYSIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS REGULATING THE DIFFERENTIATION, GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF PLANTS IN NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS AS WELL AS UNDER CROPPING SYSTEMS. THE STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE
OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AND DISCUSS SINGLE AND INTEGRATED PLANT PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES, WITH MAJOR EMPHASIS ON PHOTOSYNTHESIS, TRANSPORT OF WATER AND SOLUTES, MINERAL NUTRITION, AND ENVIRONMENTAL AND HORMONAL CONTROL OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. EACH PROCESS WILL BE EXAMINED AT THE BIOCHEMICAL, CELLULAR, MOLECULAR AND ORGANISMAL LEVEL SO AS TO PROVIDE A MORE COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF EACH PROCESS.

2) APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING- THE COURSE IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE THE STUDENTS THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL TOOLS TO UNDERSTAND AND CRITICALLY DISCUSS THE MAIN PLANT PHYSIOLOGICAL AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS UNDERLYING THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF PLANTS UNDER NATURAL AND CROPPING ENVIRONMENT. STUDENTS WILL HAVE BASIC KNOWLWDGE TO UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CELL/PLANT STRUCTRES AND FUNCTIONS; THE MAIN PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES (E.G. WATER AND NUTRIENTS UPTALE AND TRANSPORT; SYNTEHSIS OF ORGANIC MOLECULES THROUGH PHOTOSYNTHESIS; PERCEPTION AND TRANSDUCTION OF PLANT HORMONES AND OTHER PHYSICAL EXTERNAL AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS IN REGULATING PLANT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.

3) MAKING JUDGEMENTS
THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE PROVIDED BY THE COURSE WILL GIVE THE STUDENTS THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE AND THE PRACTICAL TOOLS TO FACE AND DISCUSS TOPICS AND SOLVE PROBLEMS OF RELEVANT IMPORTANCE FOR THE MAINTAINANCE OF PLANT BIODIVERSITY, CONSERVATION OF NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS AND MANAGMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRAINTS LIMITING PLANT PRODUCTIVITY AND FOOD QUALITY FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.

4) COMMUNICATION SKILLS
COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND ANALYTICAL ABILITIES ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENTS ON THE BASIC AND MOST ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD OF PLANT PHYSIOLOGY WILL BE ASSESSED THROUGH WRITTEN TESTS (SEE BELOW SECTION) CONTAINING OPEN OR MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS, AND ORAL REPORTS, WHICH WILL ALLOW FACTUAL RECALL, APPLICATION OF CONCEPTS AND PROBLEM SOLVING. COMMUNICATION SKILLS WILL BE ALSO ASSESSED THROUGH CLARITY IN WRITING, ACCURACY IN GRAMMAR, AND SPELLING AND ORGANIZATION IN PRESENTATION OF FACTS.

5) LEARNING SKILLS- STUDENTS WILL BE CONTINOUSLY ASSISTED AND CHALLENGED IN DEVELOPING AN AUTONOMOUS AN ANALYTICAL APPROCHES IN STUDYING PLANT PHYSIOLOGY, WITH THE FINAL AIM TO IMPROVE THEIR CRITICAL AND EVALUATING ABILITIES IN THE SPECIFIC FIELD OF PLANT PHYSIOLOGY. THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE IS FUNDAMENTAL FOR STUDENTS WISHING TO CONTINUE THEIR STUDIES IN PLANT PHYSIOLOGY OR PLANT BIOLOGY, BY APPLYING TO SPECIFIC MASTER AND PHD PROGRAMMES OFFERED BY UNIVERSITY OF SALERNO OR OTHER ITALIAN AND FOREIGNER UNIVERSITY.

THE STUDENTS MUST HAVE HAVE A SOUND BACK-GROUND KNOWLEDGE IN PLANT CELL BIOLOGY, BOTANY, INORGANIC AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, BIOCHEMISTRY
