Objectives | |

RIVER AND COASTAL MANAGEMENT WILL BE ADDRESSED WITH AN HOLISTIC APPROACH PARTICULARLY FOCUSING ON THE ISSUES OF THE PROTECTION AND RESTORATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE MITIGATION OF HYDRAULIC RISK. STUDENTS WILL UNDERSTAND THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN SEDIMENT AND WATER COMPONENTS AND BETWEEN THE RIVER AND COASTAL ENVIRONMENTS AND HOW THESE COMPONENTS CONTRIBUTE TO THE EQUILIBRIUM OF THE RIVER-COASTAL CONTINUUM. . TEACHING WILL BE DIVIDED INTO TWO MODULES: 1. RIVER MANAGEMENT, 2. COASTAL MANAGEMENT. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE CAPACITY OF UNDERSTANDING THE MORPHOLOGICAL EVOLUTION OF RIVERS AND COASTS WILL BE DEVELOPED. STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO MODEL THE SEDIMENT LOAD AT CATCHMENT SCALE AND TO CARRY OUT SIMPLE SEDIMENT BUDGETS OF COASTAL CELLS. THE BEST MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT OF MORPHOLOGICAL EQUILIBRIUM AND HIGH ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY WILL BE FOCUSED WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO THE EUROPEAN DIRECTIVES. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP THE CAPACITY OF IDENTIFYING THE FEATURES OF SPECIFIC RIVER AND COASTAL ENVIRONMENTS, OF ESTIMATING THE POSSIBLE FUTURE TRENDS AND CONSEQUENTLY OF DEFINING THE MOST ADAPT MANAGEMENT STRATEGY TO ACHIEVE BOTH THE OBJECTIVES OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY AND RISK RESILIENCE. MAKING JUDGEMENTS: KNOW HOW TO DEFINE THE MOST APPROPRIATE MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES TO COMBINE THE OBJECTIVE OF RESILIENCE TO HYDRAULIC RISK WITH THAT OF HIGH ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: KNOW HOW TO WORK IN GROUPS AND HOW TO ILLUSTRATE A RIVER OR COASTAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT ORALLY AND GRAPHICALLY.
