THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WILL BE COVERED: - REGULATORY FRAMEWORK, WATER DIRECTIVE (2000/60/EC) FLOODS DIRECTIVE (2007/60/EC); - PRESSURES AND IMPACTS ON RIVER ENVIRONMENTS, DEFINITION AND ASSESSMENT OF ECOLOGICAL STATUS. - METHODS FOR ESTIMATING EXPECTED FLOOD FLOWS WITH ASSIGNED PROBABILITY; - ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTS OF LAND USE CHANGES ON THE FLOOD HYDROGRAM. - HYDRAULICS OF UNSTEADY FLOW IN FREE-SURFACE STREAMS; SHALLOW WATER EQUATIONS; - HYDRAULIC MODELING OF RIVER FLOODS UNDER PERMANENT AND UNSTEADY FLOW CONDITIONS USING BOTH ONE- AND TWO-DIMENSIONAL APPROACHES; - MATHEMATICAL AND NUMERICAL MODELS FOR THE SOLUTION OF SHALLOW WATER EQUATIONS; AVAILABLE SOFTWARE - BED SEDIMENT TRANSPORT, INCIPIENT MOTION, ESTIMATION OF BED-SEDIMENT FLOW RATE; - SUSPENDED SOLID TRANSPORT, ESTIMATION OF TOTAL SOLID FLOW RATE; - BED FORMS, DUNES AND ANTIDUNES; - EXNER EQUATION AND SEDIMENT BALANCE; - MODELING OF BED EROSION PHENOMENA, SEDIMENT TRANSPORT, INCISION AND AGGRADATION; - MASS TRANSPORT PHENOMENA, DEBRIS CURRENTS, HYPERCONCENTRATED FLOWS; - FLOOD HAZARD AND FLOOD RISK MAPPING; - DEBRIS FLOW HAZARD MAPPING; - IDENTIFICATION OF RISKS RELATED TO LOCAL FACTORS AND MORPHOLOGICAL DYNAMICS; - MANAGEMENT OF VEGETATION IN THE RIVERINE ENVIRONMENT. THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED WILL BE APPLIED IN THE ANALYSIS OF A REAL-WORLD CASE STUDY FOR WHICH DESIGN FLOODS WITH ASSIGNED RETURN TIMES WILL BE ESTIMATED, HYDRAULIC MODELING OF TO THE REFERENCE FLOODS WILL BE IMPLEMENTED, AND THE FLOOD HAZARD MAP WILL BE PRODUCED MODULE 2, FLOOD RISK MITIGATION. (TOTAL MODULE DURATION: 60 HOURS; LECTURES: 35 HOURS, CLASSROOM EXERCISES: 20 HOURS, FIELD VISITS 5 HOURS). THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WILL BE COVERED: - APPROACHES FOR FLOOD RISK MITIGATION. - NON-STRUCTURAL MEASURES FOR FLOOD RISK MITIGATION, WARNING SYSTEMS, WATERSHED PLANNING, LAND USE CONSTRAINTS, DELOCALIZATION; - PASSIVE DEFENSE MEASURES; - INTEGRATED FLOOD RISK MITIGATION AND ECOLOGICAL QUALITY ENHANCEMENT INTERVENTIONS, NATURE BASED SOLUTIONS; - INTERVENTIONS FOR FLOOD LAMINATION, LAMINATION RESERVOIRS, DIFFUSE LAMINATION AREAS; - INTERVENTIONS FOR INCREASING FLOW CAPACITY, LEVEES AND DIVERSION CHANNELS; - INTERVENTIONS FOR THE MITIGATION OF RISK ASSOCIATED WITH MORPHOLOGICAL DYNAMICS, BANK DEFENSES, WEIRS AND CHECK-DAMS THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED WILL BE APPLIED IN THE ANALYSIS OF A REAL CASE STUDY FOR WHICH A FLOOD RISK MITIGATION SYSTEM WILL BE PROPOSED |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF LECTURES (70 HOURS), CLASSROOM EXERCISES (35 HOURS) AND LABORATORY EXERCISES (5 HOURS) AND FIELD VISITS (10 HOURS). THE LECTURES WILL ENABLE THE STUDENT TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE OF DIFFERENT MODELING AND RISK MANAGEMENT APPROACHES. THE EXERCISES WILL ENABLE THE STUDENT TO DEVELOP THE SKILLS TO APPLY ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES AND TO IDENTIFY MITIGATION MEASURES SUITABLE FOR DIFFERENT CONTEXTS. THE WORK DONE DURING THE EXERCISES WILL BE ORGANIZED IN THE FORM OF A GROUP ESSAY AIMED AT ACQUIRING SKILLS IN DRAFTING PROJECTS AND COMMUNICATING THE RESULTS OF TECHNICAL ANALYSES. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PAPER WILL BE DISCUSSED WITH THE CLASS DURING THE TUTORIAL HOURS AND INDIVIDUALLY WITH THE WORKING GROUP DURING TEACHER RECEPTION HOURS. PARTICIPATION IN ALL TEACHING ACTIVITIES IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF AN ORAL TEST WITH A TOTAL DURATION OF ABOUT 40 MINUTES. THE ORAL TEST INCLUDES TWO PARTS: 1.THE DISCUSSION OF THE GROUP ASSIGNMENT DONE BY THE STUDENTS AND 2. THE VERIFICATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED. THE DISCUSSION OF THE GROUP ESSAY (LASTING ABOUT 20 MINUTES) IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO WORK IN A GROUP, TO WRITE REPORTS AND GRAPHICAL ELABORATIONS, AND TO BE ABLE TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO SPECIFIC CONTEXTS. THE PROFICIENCY TEST (LASTING APPROXIMATELY 20 MINUTES) IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE STUDENT'S LEARNING OF FLOOD RISK ANALYSIS AND MITIGATION TECHNIQUES; IT IS ALSO AIMED AT VERIFYING THE SKILLS ACQUIRED IN THE EXPOSITION WITH APPROPRIATE TECHNICAL LANGUAGE OF THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE AND THE ABILITY TO DRAW FROM THE RELEVANT LITERATURE FOR IN-DEPTH STUDIES AND UPDATES ON THE SUBJECT. THE GRADE FOR THE ORAL TEST DEPENDS ON THE DEGREE OF COMPREHENSIVENESS OF THE ESSAY AND THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO EFFECTIVELY PRESENT THE CONTENT AND CRITICALLY DISCUSS THE TOPICS EXPLAINED. THE FINAL GRADE WILL RESULT FROM THE AVERAGE OF A SCORE BETWEEN 0 AND 30 FROM THE DISCUSSION OF THE PAPER, 0 AND 30 FROM THE KNOWLEDGE TEST. |
