Objectives
THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE ARE TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE BASIC MACROECONOMIC MODELS AND TO ILLUSTRATE THEIR POLICY IMPLICATIONS IN CLOSED AND OPEN ECONOMIES. STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES AS FOLLOWS:
-KNOWLEDGE OF THE COMPONENTS OF THE REAL AND FINANCIAL SECTORS OF ECONOMIC SYSTEMS;
- THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND HOW THEIR INTERACTION MAY INFLUENCE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ECONOMIC POLICIES;
-THE ABILITY TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ECONOMIC POLICIES THROUGH A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT ECONOMIES WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBALIZATION.
-THE ABILITY TO ANALYZE ECONOMY-WIDE PHENOMENA AND THE AGGREGATE BEHAVIOR OF CONSUMERS AND FIRMS.
Prerequisites
TO BE ADMITTED TO THE COURSE, STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE EXAM OF MICROECONOMICS. STRAIGHT LINES IN THE X,Y SPACE AND BASIC ELEMENTS OF CALCULUS (SERIES, LIMITS, DERIVATIVES, INTEGRALS). BASIC STATISTICS.

-WE STUDY THE IMPACT OF MONETARY AND FISCAL POLICY IN A CLOSED ECONOMY.
-THE ANALYSIS IS SUBSEQUENTLY EXTENDED TO OPEN ECONOMIES BY COVERING THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
1.THE BALANCE OF PAYMENTS;
2. THE GOODS MARKET; INTEREST RATE AND EXCHANGE RATE; 3. THE OPEN ECONOMY;
4. ECONOMIC POLICY IN AN OPEN ECONOMY.
- LABOUR MARKET
- THE AGGREGATE DEMAND AND SUPPLY MODEL IS PRESENTED AND THE EFFECTS OF MACROECONOMIC POLICIES ARE INVESTIGATED.
- THE DETERMINANTS OF LONG TERM UNEMPLOYMENT AND INFLATION ARE THEN ANALYZED.
- FINALLY, ECONOMIC GROWTH WILL BE OUTLINED.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE PROVIDES 46 HOURS OF LECTURES AND 14 HOURS OF EXERCISE ALSO IN SMALL GROUPS. DURING THE LECTURES, I WILL PRESENT CASE STUDIES AS EXAMPLES RELATED TO THE THEORETICAL PART.

INDIVIDUAL TUTORSHIP WILL BE PROVIDED DURING OFFICE HOURS.
Verification of learning
FINAL EXAMINATION:
WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO ASSESS WHETHER STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE INTERCONNECTIONS AMONG THE PARTS OF AN ECONOMIC SYSTEM AND TO APPLY THEIR KNOWLEDGE TO SPECIFIC MACROECONOMIC CONTEXTS.


THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION WILL LAST 2 HOURS AND CONSIST OF EXERCISES AND OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS.

THE QUESTIONS OF THE WRITTEN EXAM ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE DEALT WITH DURING THE COURSE.
STUDENTS CAN TAKE ORAL EXAM TO IMPROVE THE MARK OF THE WRITTEN EXAM. THE DURATION WILL BE ABOUT 15 MINUTES.

GRADES ARE ON A SCALE OF 30, THE MINIMUM PASSING MARK CORRESPONDS TO 18/30.
