Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO INTRODUCE THEORY, TECHNIQUES, AND ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONS OF SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING. IT ALSO AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH WORKING TOOLS FOR MANAGING SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING DATA. THE COURSE CONTENT IS FINALIZED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANALYSIS SKILLS RELATED TO ENVIRONMENTAL AND TERRITORIAL DATA, ALSO FOR HAZARD REDUCTION AND DECISION SUPPORT. THE COURSE ALSO AIMS TO ENHANCE THE ABILITY TO INTERACT WITH SPECIALISTS IN DIFFERENT FIELDS. FREE SOFTWARE AND SATELLITE-IMAGE PUBLIC DATABASES WILL BE USED.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
- KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN TECHNIQUES FOR SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING, MAINLY OPTICAL AND RADAR;
- CAPABILITY TO UNDERSTAND, ANALYSE, AND ELABORATE SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING DATA;
- CAPABILITY TO PLAN MONITORING OF ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES THROUGH SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING DATA.
TRANSFERABLE SKILLS:
- USING SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING DATA FOR MONITORING AND EVALUATING ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION;
- EVALUATING AND ANALYSING TERRITORIAL CHANGES;
- ESTIMATING ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS AND VARIABLES FROM SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING DATA, IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE ENVIRONMENTAL STATUS.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF PHYSICS, GEOSCIENCES AND GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS ARE MANDATORY PREREQUISITES.
Contents
INTRODUCTION TO THE BASIC PROCESSES THAT ENSURE THE ACQUISITION OF SPACE-BORNE IMAGERY AND OVERVIEW OF THE MAIN SATELLITE OBSERVATION SYSTEMS, FOCUSSING ON OPTICAL AND RADAR IMAGERY (LECTURES, 10 HOURS).
