GENERAL OBJECTIVE
THE COURSE OBJECTIVES FIT INTO THE GENERAL FRAMEWORK OF THE MASTER'S DEGREE COURSE, WHICH AIMS TO TRAIN A PROFESSIONAL FIGURE EXPERT IN THE FIELD OF MONITORING, ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC RISKS AND LAND MANAGEMENT. THE TRAINING PROCESS UNDERTAKEN BY A STUDENT WITH THE BACHELOR'S DEGREE ENABLES THE ACQUISITION OF A SOLID INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND ON THE VARIOUS ASPECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES AND AN EXCELLENT MASTERY OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD. THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD OF INVESTIGATION ENABLES GRADUATES TO ADDRESS THE CHALLENGES POSED TO THE ENVIRONMENT BY NATURAL EVOLUTION AND ANTHROPOGENIC INTERVENTIONS IN AN INTEGRATED MANNER, EXERCISING BROAD ORGANISATIONAL AUTONOMY.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO BECOME ACQUAINTED, WITH THE SUPPORT OF ADVANCED TEXTBOOKS, WITH CUTTING-EDGE TOPICS IN THE FIELD OF SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PURPOSES, ELABORATING AND/OR APPLYING ORIGINAL IDEAS, POSSIBLY ALSO IN A RESEARCH CONTEXT.
IN DETAIL, STUDENTS WILL HAVE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
- OF THE MAIN TECHNIQUES FOR SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO OPTICAL AND RADAR REMOTE SENSING, AND OF THE UNDERLYING THEORY;
- OF WHAT IS NECESSARY FOR THE COMPREHENSION, ANALYSIS AND PROCESSING OF REMOTE SENSING SATELLITE DATA FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND TERRITORIAL SYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND RISK MITIGATION;
- OF WHAT IS NECESSARY FOR THE DESIGN OF MONITORING OF ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES USING SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING DATA.

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE COURSE AIMS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO DEVISE AND SUPPORT ARGUMENTS RELATED TO:
- THE USE OF REMOTE SENSING SATELLITE DATA FOR MONITORING AND EVALUATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION PROCESSES;
- THE ASSESSMENT AND ANALYSIS OF LAND TRANSFORMATIONS;
- THE ESTIMATE OF INDICES AND VARIABLES DERIVED FROM SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING DATA FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE STATE OF THE ENVIRONMENT.
IN DETAIL, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS IN NEW (I.E., UNFAMILIAR) AREAS, EMBEDDED IN INTERDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTS (E.G., RELATED TO PHYSICAL, CHEMICAL, ENGINEERING, BIOLOGICAL, MEDICAL, ETHICAL ASPECTS ETC.) REGARDING TO:
- THE ASSESSMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION PROCESSES;
- LAND TRANSFORMATIONS.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT
THE COURSE AIMS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO SEARCH, DOWNLOAD AND INTERPRET DATA FROM SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING REGARDING
- THE STATE OF THE ENVIRONMENT
- LAND TRANSFORMATIONS.
IN DETAIL, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO INTEGRATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AUTONOMOUSLY IN ORDER TO BETTER HANDLE THE COMPLEXITY OF ISSUES RELATED TO THE CHOICE OF SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING IMAGERY AND APPROPRIATE ANALYSIS METHODOLOGIES FOR DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS. THIS WILL ENABLE THEM TO MAKE JUDGMENTS EVEN WITH INCOMPLETE DATA.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE COURSE AIMS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO COMMUNICATE CONCEPTS AND CONCLUSIONS REGARDING THE USE OF SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING IMAGERY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND TERRITORIAL SYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND RISK MITIGATION, AS WELL AS THE RATIONALE BEHIND THEM, TO BOTH SPECIALIST AND NON-SPECIALIST INTERLOCUTORS. THIS ABILITY WILL RESULT FROM THE AQUIRED KNOWLEDGE.

ABILITY TO LEARN
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE SKILLS FOR SELF-MANAGED AND AUTONOMOUS STUDY, ENABLING THEM TO FIND INDIVIDUAL PATHS TO ADDRESS THE COMPLEX AND MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE USE OF SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING IMAGERY FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION PROCESSES AND LAND TRANSFORMATIONS, AS WELL AS FOR HAZARD MITIGATION.
Prerequisites
IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND AND BE ABLE TO APPLY MOST OF THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE TEACHING, A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF PHYSICS AND GEOSCIENCES IS USEFUL.
Contents
INTRODUCTION TO THE BASIC PROCESSES THAT ENSURE THE ACQUISITION OF SPACE-BORNE IMAGERY AND OVERVIEW OF THE MAIN SATELLITE OBSERVATION SYSTEMS, FOCUSSING ON OPTICAL AND RADAR IMAGERY (LECTURES, 10 HOURS).
DIGITAL IMAGE ANALYSIS, INCLUDING SAR INTERFEROMETRY FOR GROUND DISPLACEMENT MONITORING, VARIOUS INTERPRETATION TECHNIQUES AND THEIR APPLICATIONS TO SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT (LECTURES, 15 HOURS; PRACTICALS, 6 HOURS).
CASE STUDY PRESENTATIONS ON ENVIRONMENTAL AND GEOPHYSICAL ANALYSES (LECTURES, 15 HOURS; PRACTICALS, 6 HOURS).

Teaching Methods
LECTURES (40 HOURS, 5 ECTS), PRACTICALS (12 HOURS, 1 ECTS). STUDENTS SERVE THEIR INTERESTS BEST BY REGULAR ATTENDANCE.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT LEVEL OF THE COURSE OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM WITH A GRADE OUT OF THIRTY, WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF HONORS. THE GRADE WILL DEPEND ON HOW WELL THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES HAVING LEARNED AND UNDERSTOOD THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE. THE MINIMUM PASSING GRADE IS 18/30, WHICH IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A REASONABLE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOOLS FOR PROCESSING REMOTE SENSING DATA AND THE METHODOLOGIES INTRODUCED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND TERRITORIAL SYSTEMS, FOR STUDYING GEOPHYSICAL PHENOMENA, AND FOR RISK MITIGATION. THE HIGHEST GRADE (30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE AND THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOOLS FOR PROCESSING REMOTE SENSING DATA AND THE METHODOLOGIES INTRODUCED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND TERRITORIAL SYSTEMS, FOR STUDYING GEOPHYSICAL PHENOMENA, AND FOR RISK MITIGATION.
HONORS MAY BE AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO ACHIEVE THE HIGHEST GRADE OF 30/30, CONSIDERING THE QUALITY OF THE EXPOSITION IN TERMS OF THE USE OF APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE AND THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT DEMONSTRATED IN EVALUATING THE APPLICABILITY OF THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL AND GEOPHYSICAL PROBLEMS. THE ASSESSMENT INCLUDES AN ORAL EXAM OF ABOUT 30 MINUTES, COMPRISING AT LEAST THREE QUESTIONS RELATED TO THE CONTENTS OF THE LECTURES AND THE DISCUSSION OF AT LEAST ONE OF THE PAPERS PRODUCED BY THE STUDENT BEFORE THE EXAM ON TOPICS ASSIGNED DURING THE COURSE, RELATED TO THE APPLICATION OF THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE. THE FINAL GRADE WILL BE DETERMINED BASED ON THE QUALITY AND COMPLETENESS OF THE ORAL PRESENTATION (2/3) AND THE EVALUATION OF THE PAPER PRESENTED (1/3).
