The course aims to provide students with the theoretical knowledge in the field of methodology to consciously and critically analyse the social, economic and cultural contexts in which individuals live nowadays. Within the scope of the teaching, the concepts underlying the methodology of the social sciences that refer to the process of knowing social reality will be analysed. The objectives include learning the epistemological foundations of social research. Knowledge and ability to understand: the student will know both the way in which the cognitive process of social reality from a sociological point of view takes place; he/she will understand the connection between theories and sociological knowledge; he/she will be able to distinguish the different theories underlying the methodology of the social sciences. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the student will be able to read social phenomena through the methodological approach; elaborate ways of cognitive paths of social phenomena; distinguish the methodological approaches through which social phenomena can be studied. |

The course will be introduced by a general discussion on the problems of sociological knowledge, with respect to its ontological, epistemological and methodological implications. This will be followed by an in-depth examination of the various methodological approaches aimed at highlighting the relationship between thought and reality, between theory and empirical fact. These preliminary arguments will form the basis for analysing similarities and differences between science and common sense, between social sciences and natural sciences. The vocabulary of methodology will then be addressed in order to extend the discussion to more operational aspects. |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
Learning will be tested by means of an examination aimed at assessing the students' knowledge and ability to understand the fundamental principles of epistemology and methodology of the social sciences, in line with the training objectives and the contents of the course. By means of the oral test, students will have to demonstrate their ability to transversally correlate the topics dealt with during the methodology of social sciences course and, where possible, connect them with the sociological subjects studied in the other subjects of the course. The ability to gather and interpret information deemed useful for making autonomous judgements, including reflection on social and methodological issues, will also be tested, as well as the learning ability required to undertake any subsequent studies with a considerable degree of autonomy. Account will also be taken of both the expository capacity of the content and the ability to use language appropriate to the scientific community of social research methodology and technique. The examination will take the form of an oral interview and will be marked in thirtieths. Honours will be awarded to those who demonstrate, in addition to having learned the subjects of the course, critical capacity and mastery of the technical language of the subject. |
