Objectives
THE MODULE AIMS AT INTRODUCING STUDENTS TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PRODUCTION OF ILLUSTRATED BOOKS IN THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD IN A WIDE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA. IN PARTICULAR, THE MODULE WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO DEAL WITH THE STUDY OF TECHNICAL ASPECTS, AS WELL AS WITH THE ANALYSIS OF THE INTERACTION BETWEEN TEXT AND IMAGE WITHIN AND WITHOUT BOOKS, WITH PATRONAGE, WITH THE CIRCULATION OF BOOKS, AND WITH THEIR AUDIENCE.
Prerequisites
A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES WILL BE NECESSARY TO ACCESS RELEVANT BIBLIOGRAPHY. A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF LATIN AND GREEK IS DESIRABLE ALTHOUGH NOT COMPULSORY
Contents
INTRODUCTORY LECTURES WILL BE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF BOOK ILLUSTRATION BETWEEN LATE ANTIQUITY AND THE LATE MIDDLE AGES. THE FOLLOWING ONES WILL CONCENTRATE ON THE EXAMINATION OF MANUSCRIPTS PRODUCED BETWEEN THE EIGHTH AND THE NINTH CENTURIES THROUGH WHICH EXPLORE SEVERAL ISSUES, INCLUDING THE AUTHORSHIP OF TEXTS AND IMAGES, PATRONAGE, THE CIRCULATION OF BOOKS, THEIR AUDIENCES, THE VALUE OF THE WRITTEN WORD VIS-À-VIS ORALITY AND FIGURAL IMAGERY.

LECTURES IN THE CLASSROOM SUPPORTED WITH POWER POINT PRESENTATIONS.
Verification of learning
THE ACQUISITION OF SPECIALIST COMPETENCES INHERENT TO THE ANALYSIS OF BOOK ILLUSTRATION WITHIN SPECIFIC HISTORICAL CONTEXTS WILL BE VERIFIED THROUGH A WRITTEN ASSESSMENT DURING THE MODULE AND A FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION. THE WRITTEN ASSESSMENT, TO BE COMPLETED AT HOME, WILL BE CENTRED ON THE ANALYSIS OF AN EXAMPLE OF BOOK ILLUSTRATION PREVIOUSLY AGREED WITH THE LECTURER.
