Objectives
THE AIM OF THE MODULE IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO BYZANTIUM’S CULTURAL HERITAGE IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. AMONG THE SUBJECT MATTER THAT WILL BE PRESENTED, THERE WILL BE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES, STILL-STANDING BUILDINGS AND THEIR DECORATION, AS WELL AS ARTEFACTS RELATED TO RELIGIOUS AND LAY PRACTICES AND DAILY LIFE. THE MODULE WILL COVER FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE CAPITAL CITY OF CONSTANTINOPLE IN AD 330 TO THE FALL OF THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE IN 1453. THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA INVOLVED STRETCHES BETWEEN ITALY, THE BALKANS, ANATOLIA, THE ISLANDS OF THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN AND NORTH AFRICA.
Prerequisites
THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE (B2) IS ESSENTIAL.
Contents
THIS MODULE WILL INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO A SELECTION OF IMPORTANT TOPICS IN THE VISUAL AND MATERIAL CULTURE OF BYZANTIUM AS WELL AS TO FOCAL METHODOLOGICAL QUESTIONS.

THE ACQUISITION OF COMPETENCES INHERENT TO THE THEMES DEALT WITH OVER THE MODULE WILL BE VERIFIED THROUGH A WRITTEN ASSESSMENT AND A FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION. THE WRITTEN ASSESSMENT, TO BE PRODUCED AT HOME, WILL CONSIST OF AN ESSAY CENTRED ON THE ANALYSIS OF AN EXAMPLE PREVIOUSLY AGREED WITH THE LECTURER; IT WILL BE C. 5–7 PAGES LONG WITH FOOTNOTES, FOLLOWED BY BIBLIOGRAPHY AND ILLUSTRATIONS; STUDENTS WILL SEND IT TO THE LECTURER VIA EMAIL AT LEAST 15 DAYS BEFORE THE ORAL EXAMINATION.
