Objectives
THE AIM OF THE MODULE IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO MEDIEVAL AND BYZANTINE ART.
AMONG THE TOPICS THAT WILL BE PRESENTED, THERE WILL BE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES, STILL-STANDING BUILDINGS AND THEIR DECORATION, AS WELL AS ARTEFACTS RELATED TO RELIGIOUS AND LAY PRACTICES AND DAILY LIFE.
THE MODULE WILL COVER FROM THE AGE OF CONSTANTINE I IN THE EARLY FOURTH CENTURY TO THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY. THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA INVOLVED STRETCHES BETWEEN ITALY, NORTHERN EUROPE AND THE BRITISH ISLES, THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN, AND NORTH AFRICA.
Prerequisites
AS THE MODULE WILL BE DELIVERED IN ENGLISH, THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE (AT LEAST B2) IS ESSENTIAL.
Contents
THE MODULE WILL DEAL, IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, WITH THE MAIN DEVELOPMENTS OF THE VISUAL AND MATERIAL CULTURE AS WELL AS LATE ANTIQUE, MEDIEVAL, AND BYZANTINE ARCHITECTURE IN THE PERIOD BETWEEN THE FOURTH AND THE FOURTEENTH CENTURIES.

CLASSROOM LECTURES WITH THE AID OF PPT; OCCASIONALLY ON-SITE LECTURES.
