Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENT WITH FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF GENERAL PATHOLOGY IN ORDER TO STUDY THE EVENTS RELATED TO THE ONSET AND EVOLUTION OF HUMAN DISEASES ACCORDING TO THE MAIN EXOGENOUS AND ENDOGENOUS CAUSES OF DAMAGE, THE PATHOGENESIS, THE FACTORS OF PROGRESSION OR RESOLUTION OF THE DISEASE, THE POTENTIAL TARGETS FOR THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTION.

AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL KNOW:
- THE BASIC MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY;
- THE MAIN MECHANISMS OF DAMAGE TO THE HUMAN BODY
- THE ETIOPATHOGENESIS OF CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR ALTERATIONS
- THE ALTERATIONS OF INTEGRATED PROCESSES IN ORGANS AND SYSTEMS
- THE PRINCIPLES FOR DIAGNOSIS AND PROGNOSIS OF PATHOLOGIES FOUNDED ON INFLAMMATORY, ONCOLOGICAL, IMMUNE, METABOLIC PROCESSES

AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- ELABORATE THE PATHOGENETIC NETWORKS ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC CAUSES OF DAMAGE
- IDENTIFY THE POTENTIAL CELLULAR OR MOLECULAR SITES FOR THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTION
- EVALUATE THE MEANS FOR DISEASE CONTROL, PROGRESSION OR RESOLUTION
- PERCEIVE THE SOCIAL AND CLINICAL IMPACT OF SPECIFIC PATHOLOGIES, THE RISK OF TRANSMISSION AND INFECTION, THE ROLE OF IDENTIFYING THE CAUSES OF THE DISEASE IN THE CHOICE OF THERAPEUTIC TARGETS
Prerequisites
IS REQUIRED THE KNOWLEDGE OF BIOCHEMISTRY
Contents
DEFINITION OF DISEASE (8 HOURS): ENDOGENOUS AND EXOGENOUS FACTORS OF DISEASE; EXTRINSIC PATHOGENIC FACTORS (PHYSICAL, CHEMICAL, FOOD, BIOLOGICAL).
INTRINSIC PATHOGENIC FACTORS (8 HOURS): GENETIC AND METABOLIC DISEASES
CELLULAR PATHOLOGY (6 HOURS): CAUSES OF CELL DAMAGE; REVERSIBLE AND IRREVERSIBLE CELLULAR DAMAGE; HYPOXIA, FREE RADICALS; ALTERATIONS OF THE CELL STRUCTURE IN DAMAGE; NECROSIS AND APOPTOSIS; MECHANISMS OF CELLULAR ADAPTATION.
INFLAMMATION (6 HOURS): PROCESSES AND STAGES; ACUTE INFLAMMATION CELLS AND SOLUBLE MEDIATORS; CHRONIC INFLAMMATION; GRANULOMAS.; HYPERTHERMIA, FEVER.
IMMUNOLOGY AND IMMUNOPATHOLOGY (7 HOURS): THE IMMUNE SYSTEM; LYMPHOCYTE POPULATIONS; SPECIFICITY AND MEMORY; ANTIGENS AND ANTIBODIES; HISTOCOMPATIBILITY ANTIGENS; IMMEDIATE AND DELAYED-TYPE HYPERSENSITIVITY; AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES.
ONCOLOGY (7 HOURS): CELL CYCLE CONTROL AND CELL PROLIFERATION; BENIGN AND MALIGNANT TUMORS; CARCINOGENESIS; ONCOGENES AND TUMOR SUPPRESSOR GENES; NEOANGIOGENESIS; METASTASES.
METABOLIC DISEASES (6 HOURS): IPERLIPOPROTINEMIE, ATHEROSCLEROSIS, DIABETES
Teaching Methods
THE TEACHING PROVIDES FRONTAL LESSONS FOR 48 TOTAL HOURS (6 CFU), WHICH ARE PERFORMED IN THE CLASSROOM THROUGH SLIDE PROJECTION. ATTENDANCE OF CLASSROOM LESSONS IS COMPULSORY. TO TAKE THE FINAL EVALUATION, THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 70% OF THE TEACHING HOURS
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF OBJECTIVES WILL BE CERTIFIED THROUGH A VERBAL EXAMINATION EVALUATED WITH A MAXIMAL SCORE OF 30/30. THE LENGTH OF THE VERBAL EXAM IS ON AVERAGE 20-30 MINUTES DURING WHICH THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE PRINCIPLES LEARNED, THE MEDICAL SPEAKING ABILITY AND TERMINOLOGY, THE CAPABILITY TO CORRELATE THE ETIOLOGICAL FACTORS TO CELLULAR, MOLECULAR AND PHYSIOPATHOLOGICAL ALTERATIONS WILL BE EVALUATED. THE VERBAL EVALUATION WILL COVER DIFFERENT ISSUES OF THE PROGRAM AND OF PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE, NEEDED FOR THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE SPECIFIC SUBJECTS OF THE EXAM. THE EVALUATION OF 18/30 WILL BE AWARDED TO THE STUDENT WHO SHOWS THE ABILITY TO CORRELATE SPECIFIC ETIOLOGICAL FACTORS TO THE PATHOGENESIS AND PROGRESSION OF THE DISEASE PROCESS. HONORS CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WHO REACH THE MAXIMUM MARK OF 30/30 AND DEMONSTRATE COMPREHENSIVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PATHOGENESIS, THE CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS INVOLVED, THE PROGRESSION AND RESOLUTION FACTORS OF SPECIFIC DISEASES, DEMONSTRATING FULL ACQUISITION OF CORRECT MEDICAL TERMS AND THE ABILITY TO INDEPENDENTLY APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN CLASS. THE FAILURE TO ACQUIRE SUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE ABOUT CELL DAMAGE, INFLAMMATORY AND ONCOGENETIC PROCESSES, DOESN'T ALLOW IN ANY CASE TO PASS THE ASSESSMENT

More Information
THE ATTENDANCE AT CLASSES IS MANDATORY. A SATISFACTORY PREPARATION TAKES ON AVERAGE AT LEAST FOUR HOURS OF STUDY FOR EACH HOUR SPENT IN THE CLASSROOM. GIVEN THE CONTINUOUS SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS AT THE BASIS OF HUMAN DISEASE, INSIGHTS ABOUT THE TOPICS COVERED CAN BE OBTAINED FROM TEACHERS IN THE SECTOR MED/04
