Objectives
THE COURSE GIVES THE KNOWLEDGE ON BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC PLANT DISEASE-INDUCING AGENTS AND THEIR MAJOR DISEASES OCCURRING IN MEDITERRANEAN AREAS, DIAGNOSTIC METHODS AND CONTROL OF PLANT DISEASES BY USING ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY MEANS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
FUNDAMENTALS OF PLANT PATHOGENS AND THEIR ASSOCIATED DISEASES;
BASIC KNOWLEDGE ON DIAGNOSTIC METHODS, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE MOST INNOVATIVE ONES;
PRINCIPLES AND METHODS OF BIOLOGICAL AND INTEGRATED CONTROL OF PLANT DISEASES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
IDENTIFY MAJOR PLANT DISEASES;
DETECT AND IDENTIFY THE CAUSAL AGENTS THROUGH APPROPRIATE DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS;
IMPLEMENT AND RECOMMEND SUITABLE DISEASE CONTROL STRATEGIES.

Prerequisites
FOR SUCCESSFUL ACQUISITION AND APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE MAIN CONTENTS OF THE COURSE IT IS REQUIRED THAT STUDENTS HAVE PASSED THE PROPEDEUTIC EXAM OF PLANT BIOLOGY AND BOTANY.
Contents
PLANT PATHOLOGY: INTRODUCTION. THE CONCEPT OF PLANT DISEASE. TYPES OF PLANT DISEASES. ECONOMIC IMPACT, SYMPTOMS, AND DETECTION OF PLANT DISEASES.
PARASITISM AND DISEASE DEVELOPMENT.
EFFECTS OF PATHOGENS ON PLANT PHYSIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS. HOW PATHOGENS ATTACK PLANTS. HOW PLANTS DEFEND THEMSELVES AGAINST PATHOGENS.
CONTROL OF PLANT DISEASES.
CHARACTERISTICS OF PLANT PATHOGENIC FUNGI, FUNGAL-LIKE ORGANISMS, PHYTOPLASMAS, PLANT BACTERIA, PLANT VIRUSES, VIROIDS, AND PARASITIC HIGHER PLANTS, AND THEIR RESPECTIVE MAJOR DISEASES.
HINTS ON NON-INFECTIOUS PLANT DISEASES.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE HAS A TOTAL DURATION OF 63 HOURS (9 CFU) AND INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES:
CLASSROOM LECTURES (49 HOURS = 7 CFU), LABORATORY EXERCISES (7 HOURS = 1 CFU), AND FIELD TRIPS (7 HOURS = 1 CFU).
THE COURSE IS PLANNED AS FOLLOWS:
CLASSROOM LECTURES ON ALL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE;
LABORATORY EXERCISES FOR VISUAL SYMPTOM ASSESSMENT OF THE AFFECTED PLANTS AND FOR DETECTING AND IDENTIFYING THE CAUSAL PLANT PATHOGENS (STUDENTS WILL UNDERTAKE 3 EXERCISES OF 2 HOURS AND 20 MINUTES EACH);
FIELD TRIPS FOR OBSERVING AFFECTED PLANTS AND EXAMINING PLANT HOST-PATHOGEN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS.
Verification of learning
ACHIEVEMENT OF THE COURSE’S OBJECTIVES IS VALIDATED BY A FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION USING A THIRTIETHS-BASED RATING SCALE. THIS EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF QUESTIONS AND CRITICAL DISCUSSION ON THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE AND IS AIMED AT EVALUATING THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE STUDENT, HIS COMMUNICATION SKILLS USING A PROPER TERMINOLOGY, AS WELL AS HIS ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE ON THE SAME THEORETICAL CONTENTS AUTONOMOUSLY.
