Objectives
THE COURSE GIVES THE KNOWLEDGE ON CONTROL OF DISEASES AFFECTING MEDICINAL PLANTS, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO BIOLOGICAL AND INTEGRATED CONTROL METHODS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE ON CONTROL METHODS OF PLANT DISEASES;
PRINCIPLES OF THE BIOLOGICAL AND INTEGRATED CONTROL OF PLANT DISEASES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
PREVENTING AND/OR CONTROLLING DISEASES OF MEDICINAL PLANTS;
IDENTIFY THE MOST EFFECTIVE METHODS AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS ON MANAGEMENT OF DISEASES BY USING ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY MEANS.

Prerequisites
ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE IN PLANT BIOLOGY, PHARMACEUTICAL BOTANY AND PLANT PATHOLOGY IS REQUIRED.
Contents
PRINCIPLES AND GENERAL CONCEPTS OF PLANT DISEASE CONTROL.
CONTROL METHODS THAT EXCLUDE THE PATHOGEN FROM THE HOST: QUARANTINE, USE OF PATHOGEN-FREE PLANT PROPAGATING MATERIAL, AND PHYSICAL EXCLUSION OF PATHOGENS.
CONTROL METHODS THAT ERADICATE OR REDUCE PATHOGEN INOCULUM: CULTURAL METHODS, PHYSICAL METHODS, CHEMICAL METHODS AND BIOLOGICAL METHODS (SUPPRESSIVE SOILS, ANTAGONISTIC MICROORGANISMS, TRAP PLANTS, AND ANTAGONISTIC PLANTS).
MECHANISMS OF ACTION OF BIOLOGICAL CONTROL.
DISEASE CONTROL BY IMMUNIZING OR IMPROVING THE RESISTANCE OF THE HOST (CROSS PROTECTION, INDUCED RESISTANCE, IMPROVING THE GROWING CONDITIONS OF PLANTS, USE OF RESISTANT VARIETIES, CONTROL THROUGH USE OF TRANSGENIC PLANTS AND CONTROL THROUGH USE OF TRANSGENIC BIOCONTROL MICROORGANISMS).
DIRECT PROTECTION OF PLANTS FROM PATHOGENS BY BIOLOGICAL CONTROLS.
DIRECT PROTECTION BY CHEMICAL CONTROLS.
INTEGRATED CONTROL.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS TAUGHT THROUGH CLASSROOM LECTURES FOR A TOTAL DURATION OF 40 HOURS, USING COMMON COMPUTING APPLICATIONS. ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND AT LEAST 70% OF THE LESSONS IN ORDER TO BE SUBJECTED TO FINAL EXAMINATION. INFORMATION ON HOW THEIR PRESENCE IS RECORDED WILL BE PROVIDED AT BEGINNING OF THE COURSE.
Verification of learning
ACHIEVEMENT OF THE COURSE’S OBJECTIVES IS VALIDATED BY A FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION, OF ABOUT 30 MINUTES, USING A THIRTIETHS-BASED RATING SCALE. THIS EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF QUESTIONS AND CRITICAL DISCUSSION ON THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE AND IS AIMED AT EVALUATING THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE STUDENT, HIS COMMUNICATION SKILLS USING A PROPER TERMINOLOGY, AS WELL AS HIS ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE ON THE SAME THEORETICAL CONTENTS AUTONOMOUSLY.
