THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS OF THE FIRST YEAR OF THE DEGREE COURSE A BASIC KNOWLEDGE ABOUT METHODS AND TECHNIQUES OF ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION, ALSO POINTING OUT THE POSSIBLE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND EXISTING CONTEXT (URBAN FRAME AND/OR LANDSCAPE). KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: UNDERSTANDING OF THE TERMINOLOGY USED WITHIN ARCHITECTURE AND ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION; ABILITY TO ANALYZE, INTERPRET, DESCRIBE BUILDINGS AND SIMPLE URBAN FRAMES; ABILITY TO POINT OUT AND DESCRIBE – WITHIN AN URBAN FRAME AND/OR IN AN EXISTING LANDSCAPE – THOSE ELEMENTS THAT CAN HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON AN ARCHITECTURE PROJECT. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: ABILITY IN DEFINING HIERARCHIES AND PRIORITIES IN ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION, ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE IN MANAGING AND RELATE THE DIFFERENT SCALES OF THE PROJECT ONE TO EACH OTHER. MAKING JUDGEMENTS: ABILITY IN RECOGNIZING AND IDENTIFYING - BASED ON THE EXISTING CONTEXT AND THE REQUIRED FUNCTION - THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS TO DESIGN A SIMPLE BUILDING, OPTIMIZING THE SEQUENCE OF THE VARIOUS STEPS OF THE DESIGN PROCESS, AND THE TRANSITION FROM ONE STEP TO THE OTHER. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: ABILITY IN WORKING IN GROUPS AND PRESENTING ORALLY AN ISSUE RELATED TO THE TOPICS OF PROPOSED RESEARCH AND STUDY; ABILITY IN INTEGRATING VERBAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION AND GRAPHICS TO ILLUSTRATE THE CONTENTS OF AN ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT. LEARNING SKILLS: ABILITY IN APPLYING THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE CONCERNING THE ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION IN CONTEXTS (BOTH URBAN AND LANDSCAPE CONTEXTS) THAT CAN BE DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE; ABILITY IN DEALING WITH THE COURSE TOPICS BY CONDUCTING DISCIPLINARY INSIGHTS FROM DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE AND ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING AND SURVEY. IT IS ALSO VERY USEFUL THAT STUDENTS HAVE A BROAD GENERAL CULTURE, IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND AND DEEPEN THE LINKS BETWEEN THE ARCHITECTURE AND OTHER ARTS (LITERATURE, VISUAL ARTS AND PLASTIC, MUSIC, PHOTOGRAPHY, CINEMA) AND OTHER SOCIAL PHENOMENA. |

THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO TWO SEMESTERS: IN THE FIRST SEMESTER THE COURSE EXPLORES THE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS CONCERNING THE COMPOSITION OF FORMS IN SPACE BY USING SIMPLE ELEMENTS: LINEAR ELEMENTS (RODS, COLUMNS), SURFACES (WALLS, FLOORS) ELEMENTARY VOLUMES. THE SECOND SEMESTER WILL FOCUS ON THE SPATIAL COMPOSITION WITHIN THE INTERACTION WITH THE HUMAN BODY. THIS WILL LEAD TO READING AND DESIGNING SPACE IN RELATION TO MEASURES, VIEWS AND THE PATH. THROUGH THE DESIGN WORK OF A SMALL ARCHITECTURE WITHIN A SPECIFIC SITE, THE STUDENTS WILL EXPLORE THE PRACTICE OF THE SPATIAL MODELLING THROUGHOUT THE CONTROL OF THE SPATIAL AND VISUAL RELATIONS WITHIN A WORK WHICH DRAWS TOGETHER IDEATION AND THREE-DIMENSIONAL EXPLORATION. |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE COURSE COVERS LECTURES AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES. THE LECTURES DEAL WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL THEORY OF ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION. IN CLASSROOM EXERCISES THE STUDENTS – IN SOME CASES DIVIDED INTO WORKING GROUPS OF A MAXIMUM OF TWO PEOPLE – FACE SOME SMALL-SCALE PROJECTS. THE SERIES OF PROJECTS INCLUDE ALL THE CONTENT OF TEACHING AND ARE AIMED TO GIVE THE ABILITY TO DESIGN A SIMPLE BUILDING, AND TO WORK IN TEAMS AS WELL. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE ASSESSMENT REGARDING IF AND HOW THE EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED BY THE STUDENTS IS DONE THROUGH DISCUSSION OF THE PROJECT AND THROUGH AN ORAL INTERVIEW. THE CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION SHALL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CONTINUITY OF THE STUDENTS’ ENGAGEMENT DURING THE COURSE AND THEIR ABILITY TO IMPROVE THEIR LEARNING PROCESS DURING THE COURSE. CHECKING PROCEDURES ALSO PROVIDE FOR INFORMAL TALKS AT WORK IN THE CLASSROOM, CHECKS "IN PROGRESS" DURING THE COURSE AND TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE LEVEL OF STUDENT PARTICIPATION. |
