Objectives
GENERAL GOAL: STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO LEARN THAT THE ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT IS CONSTITUTED AS A CRITICAL ACT IN THE TRANSFORMATION PROCESS OF THE CITY AND THE TERRITORY; TO ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO READ AND THEMATISE THE EXISTING CONDITIONS OF THE CONTEXT AND TO REINTERPRET THEM IN THE COMPLEXITY OF RELATIONS BETWEEN THE PROJECT, THE SITE, THE FUNCTIONAL PROGRAM; TO ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO CONTROL AND MANAGE COMPLEX PROJECTS (MULTIFUNCTIONAL AND OF GREAT URBAN AND TERRITORIAL IMPACT); TO ACQUIRE SKILLS IN DESIGN CONTROL AT THE VARIOUS INTERVENTION SCALES FROM URBAN - TERRITORIAL TO DETAILED; TO ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE AND REPRESENT THE DESIGN PROCESS, THEMES AND SPATIAL SOLUTIONS THROUGH A DIVERSIFIED USE OF DRAWINGS, DIAGRAMS AND MODELS.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: TO KNOW THE THEORETICAL ISSUES AND CURRENT DEBATE IN RELATION TO URBAN AND TERRITORIAL ISSUES; TO KNOW REFERENCE PROJECTS IN RELATION TO THE THEORETICAL TOPICS COVERED; UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE - FOR THE QUALITY OF A PROJECT OF A THEMATIC FOUNDATION ALSO STEMMING FROM A CLEAR AWARENESS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEORY AND HISTORY.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: KNOWING HOW TO COMMUNICATE, THROUGH DIVERSIFIED REPRESENTATIONS, ARCHITECTURAL THEMES AND SPATIAL SOLUTIONS, BOTH THROUGH DRAWING AND ARCHITECTURAL MODELS AND THROUGH THE DRAFTING OF TEXTS.
JUDGMENT AUTONOMY: KNOWING HOW TO READ DESIGN TOPICS WITHIN SPATIAL SOLUTIONS.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: KNOWING HOW TO WORK IN A TEAM AND ORALLY AND GRAPHICALLY EXPOSE SPATIAL AND THEORETICAL-CRITICAL ISSUES.
ABILITY TO LEARN: KNOWING HOW TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND KNOWING HOW TO LEARN INDEPENDENTLY ON THE BASIS OF THE DESIGN EXPERIMENTS CARRIED OUT.
Prerequisites
A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE AND ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING AND SURVEY, AS WELL AS A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN. IT IS ALSO VERY USEFUL THAT STUDENTS HAVE A BROAD GENERAL CULTURE, IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND AND DEEPEN THE LINKS BETWEEN THE ARCHITECTURE AND OTHER ARTS (LITERATURE, VISUAL ARTS AND PLASTIC, MUSIC, PHOTOGRAPHY, CINEMA) AND OTHER SOCIAL PHENOMENA.
PROPEDEUTICITY: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN II – ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS II.
Contents
DURING THE WORKSHOP THE STUDENTS WILL WORK ON THE PROJECT ACCORDING TO THE INDICATIONS RECEIVED AND UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF THE LECTURER; THE WORK WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY CRITICAL REVIEWS OF THE DESIGN WORK, EITHER INDIVIDUAL FOR EACH PROJECT OR COLLEGIAL.
THE SCIENTIFIC-DISCIPLINARY CONTENTS OF THE COURSE ARE ARTICULATED IN THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL ASPECTS, CONCERNING THE PROBLEMS AND TECHNIQUES OF CONTEMPORARY DESIGN AND THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE ENVIRONMENT, AND IN APPLICATIVE AND EXPERIMENTAL ASPECTS, AIMED AT THE CONTROL OF THE COMPOSITIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VARIOUS ARCHITECTURAL SCALES. THEY REFER TO THE PRINCIPLES OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN UNDERSTOOD AS A PROCESS AND MOMENT OF SYNTHESIS OF A PLURALITY OF ASPECTS.
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO TWO DISTINCT PARTS - EACH COINCIDING WITH A SEMESTER - BUT CLOSELY INTEGRATED WITH ONE ANOTHER.
THE FIRST PART - TO WHICH 6 CFU CORRESPOND - COVERS:
THEORETICAL AND INTERPRETATIVE PROBLEMS OF THE ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT IN THE CITY AND IN THE LANDSCAPE (2 CFU): 8 HOURS OF LECTURES / 12 HOURS OF DESIGN STUDIO
READING OF PROJECTS WITH THE AIM OF INTERPRETING STRATEGIES AND PROCESSES (1 CFU): 4 HOURS OF LECTURES / 6 HOURS OF DESIGN STUDIO
STUDY OF STRATEGIES AND CRITICAL REFLECTIONS (1 CFU): 4 HOURS OF LECTURES / 6 HOURS OF DESIGN STUDIO
THE PROJECT OF ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE TODAY: INTRODUCTION TO EXPERIMENTATION (2 CFU): 8 HOURS OF LECTURES / 12 HOURS OF DESIGN STUDIO

THE SECOND PART - TO WHICH 6 CFU CORRESPOND - CONCERNS
PROJECT TOOLS TO MANAGE THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROJECT IN THE CONTEMPORARY: WORKING THROUGH IMAGES AND DIAGRAMS (2 CFU): 8 HOURS OF LECTURES / 12 HOURS OF DESIGN STUDIO
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT THROUGH MODELS, DRAWINGS AND IMAGES WITH SOLUTIONS AT DIFFERENT SCALES (2 CFU): 8 HOURS OF LECTURES / 12 HOURS OF DESIGN STUDIO
PROJECT MANAGEMENT OF COMPLEX URBAN AND TERRITORIAL IMPACT (2 CFU): 8 HOURS OF LECTURES / 12 HOURS OF DESIGN STUDIO
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE AWARDS 12 ECTS DIVIDED INTO 4 ECTS OF THEORETICAL REFLECTIONS THROUGH LECTURES AND SEMINARS AND 8 ECTS OF LABORATORY. THE DIDACTIC WORK WILL FOLLOW A NO-LINEAR PROCESS BASED ON A SERIES OF DESIGN STEPS, STUDIED TO GUIDE THE STUDENTS TO THE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AND WHICH WILL GIVE OPPORTUNITIES OF REFLECTION AND EXPERIMENTATION. THE LECTURES WILL PROVIDE THE USEFUL REFERENCES TO THE EXPERIMENTAL WORK DEVELOPED DURING THE DESIGN LABORATORY.
THE STUDIO-COURSE IS BASED ON AN EXTENSIVE USE OF MODELS IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND SPACE IN THE 3 DIMENSIONS AND THEN ON A WORK THROUGH DRAWINGS AND IMAGES. A SPECIFIC PROJECT PROGRAM WILL BE STUDIED AT EACH SEMESTER. AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER THE STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED ON THE BASIS OF THE DELIVERED DESIGN PROJECT AND ON THE LABORATORY WORK CARRIED OUT.
DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR STUDENTS WILL HAVE A SKETCH BOOK FOR SKETCHES MADE DURING THE LECTURES AND DURING THE INDIVIDUAL STUDY.
COURSE FREQUENCY IS MANDATORY (MINIMUM 70%). FREQUENCY IS GENERALLY ELECTRONIC AND ORGANIZED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE LECTURES AND LABS
Verification of learning
ALL THE DESIGN EXERCISES, THE MODELS AND THE DRAWINGS HANDED IN DURING THE YEAR WILL BE SHOWN AT AN EXHIBITION THAT WILL PROVIDE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR AN EVALUATION OF THE DESIGN PROCESS, STIMULATING DISCUSSIONS AND CRITICAL INSIGHTS WITH THE STUDENTS AND THE DESIGNERS INVITED AT THE EVENT IN QUALITY OF GUEST CRITICS.
TO THIS EVENT WILL FOLLOW AN INDIVIDUAL COLLOQUIUM, REGARDING THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE, THE THEORETICAL READINGS AND THE STUDIED DESIGN WORKS.
THE STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE AN ASSESSMENT FOR EACH SEMESTER WORK, AND THE FINAL MARK WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE DESIGN EXERCISES, THE PERSONAL SKETCH BOOK AND THE FINAL COLLOQUIUM HELD DURING THE FINAL TEST.

THE LOWEST MARK (18) IS ASSIGNED WHEN THE STUDENT HAS LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS AND WHEN THE DESIGN PROJECT WORK IS DEVELOPED DURING THE YEAR WITH INCONSTANCY AND INABILITY TO WORK SELF-CONTAINED.
THE HIGHEST MARK (30) IS ASSIGNED WHEN THE STUDENT PROVES TO HAVE A BROAD KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS AND WHEN THE DESIGN PROJECT WORK IS DEVELOPED DURING THE YEAR WITH CONSTANCY AND ABILITY TO WORK SELF-CONTAINED, SHOWING A TOTAL CAPACITY TO APPLY THE THEORETICAL REFLECTIONS DEVELOPED DURING THE LECTURES.
THE LAUDEM IS GIVEN WHEN THE STUDENT PROVES TO HAVE AN ABSOLUTE MASTERY OF THEORETICAL AND APPLICATIVE CONTENTS, THE ABILITY TO CONNECT DIFFERENT TOPICS TRANSVERSALLY, AND WHEN THE STUDENT IS ABLE TO TALK ABOUT THE ISSUES WITH AWARENESS AND MULTIPLE LANGUAGE PROPERTIES, MANAGING TO TACKLE PROBLEMS AS WELL COMPLEX ISSUES.
