Objectives
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES AND COMPETENCE TO BE ACQUIRED:
ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO CRITICALLY ANALYZE THE FUNDAMENTAL EVENTS OF THE HISTORY OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE, GIVING PRIORITY TO THE INTERNATIONAL EXPERIMENTS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ABILITY:
BEING AWARE OF THE MAIN LINES OF DEVELOPMENT OF THE HISTORY OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE ; REACHING AN ADEQUATE ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE, DESCRIBE AND EVALUATE THE MAIN ARCHITECTURES OF THE ANALYZED PERIOD.

KNOWING HOW TO APPLY HISTORICAL METHODOLOGY AND ARCHIVE RESEARCH TO THE ANALYSIS OF A BUILDING OF THE MORE OR LESS RECENT PAST.

KNOWING HOW TO IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS FOR ANALYZING A BUILDING AND BEING ABLE TO DEVELOP LINKS BETWEEN ARCHITECTURES OF DIFFERENT PERIODS AND STYLES.

KNOWING HOW TO ARGUE THE TOPICS COVERED AND EXPLAINING ORALLY A PERSONAL HISTORICAL RESEARCH.

KNOWING HOW TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO ANY HISTORICAL ARTIFACT AND IN PARTICULAR TO AN HISTORICAL-ARCHIVAL-ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH
Prerequisites
KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEOCLASSICAL STYLE ARE REQUIRED FOR THE SUCCESSFUL ACHIEVEMENT OF OBJECTIVES.
A PREREQUISITE TO THE COURSE IS THE HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE 1
Contents
THE PROGRAM COVERS A TIME SPAN STARTING AT THE END OF THE 18TH CENTURY AND ENDING WITH SOME EXAMPLES OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE. THE COURSE AIMS TO DEAL WITH TRANSVERSAL TOPICS, ANALYZED IN CHRONOLOGICAL WAY, WITH THE PURPOSE TO INDIVIDUALIZE THE RELATIONSHIPS ENTERTAINED BY THE SO-CALLED MODERN MOVEMENT WITH THE ARCHITECTURE THAT HAS PRECEDED IT. SOME MONOGRAPHIC LESSONS WILL BE PROPOSED DURING THE COURSE. A CRITICAL READING OF THE EXPERIENCES OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM WILL CLOSE THE COURSE.

THE TOPICS WHICH WILL BE TREATED ARE:
-THE QUESTION OF THE ORIGINS AND THE DEBATE ON THE HISTORIC STYLES (10 H)
- THE USE OF NEW MATERIALS (IRON, RENFORCED CONCRETE...) (10 H)
-THE EUROPEAN CITY BETWEEN XIX AND XX CENTURY (4 H)
- THE THE AVANT-GARDES AND THE "MASTERS" OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE (20 H)
-ITALY IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (6 H)
-LOOK AT CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE (10 H)
-HISTORICAL-CRITICAL-DOCUMENTARY STUDY (30 H)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES EX-CATHEDRA LESSONS AND SEMINARS OF THE TOTAL DURATION 60 HOURS (6 CFU) AND EXERCISES THAT ARE CARRIED OUT IN THE CLASSROOM FOR A TOTAL 30 HOURS (3 CFU).
THEORETICAL LESSONS LEAD TO A HISTORICAL-CRITICAL READING OF THE DIFFERENT ARCHITECTURAL CURRENTS THAT CHARACTERIZE MODERNITY.
IN ADDITION TO THE HISTORICAL METHODOLOGY, STYLISTIC, CONSTRUCTION AND ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE MANUFACTURES WILL BE CARRIED OUT.
THE EXERCISES IN THE CLASSROOM INCLUDE HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS ON THEMES TREATED IN THEORETICAL LESSONS. DURING THE HOURS PROVIDED FOR EXERCISES IN THE CLASSROOM, THE STUDENTS WILL ALSO WORKING ON A THEME TO DEVELOP DURING THE ENTIRE COURSE: THIS THEME WILL BE AGREED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR WITH THE PROFESSOR. THE FREQUENCY OF LESSONS AND EXERCISES IN THE CLASSROOM IS OBLIGATORY. IN ORDER TO SUSTAIN THE FINAL EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 70% OF THE HOURS OF THE TEACHING.
THE CHECK OF THE PRESENCE IS GENERALLY OF ELECTRONIC TYPE, OR IT WILL BE EXPLAINED BY THE PROFESSOR AT THE BEGINNING OF LESSONS.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES WILL BE VERIFIED THROUGH AN ORAL FINAL EXAM (AT THE END OF THE COURSE). THE ORAL TEST IS VALIDATED IN THIRTIETHS AND IS EXCEEDED WITH A MINIMUM OF 18/30. IT INCLUDES QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS OF THE TEACHING PROGRAM. THE EXAM IS AIMED TO KNOW THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACHIEVED BY THE STUDENT, AS WELL AS TO VERIFY THE EXPOSURE CAPACITY USING APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY OF ORGANIZATION OF EXPOSURE ON ARGUMENTS WITH A THEORETICAL CONTENT. THIS EXAM INCLUDES ALSO THE DISCUSSION ON THE WORKING THEME OF THE YEAR.
THE HIGHEST GRADE LEVEL (30) IS ATTIRBUTED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE CHARACTERISTICS AND SPECIFICS OF THE ARCHITECTURAL STYLES, MAJOR WORKS AND AUTHORS COVERED.
PRAISE IS AWARDED WHEN THE CANDIDATE DEMONSTRATES SIGNIFICANT AND COMPLETE MASTERY OF THE CONTENT AND SHOWS THE ABILITY TO PRESENT THE TOPICS WITH REMARKABLE OWNERSHIP OF LANGUAGE AND INDEPENDENT ELABORATION SKILLS EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED BY THE LECTURER.
