THE COURSE AIMS TO MAKE THE STUDENT ACQUAINTED WITH CRITICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS THAT MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR THEM TO EXAMINE, NOT ONLY FROM A SPECIFICALLY PHILOSOPHICAL POINT OF VIEW, THE INTERTWINING OF RHETORICAL AND POLITICAL DIMENSIONS IN THE CONTEXT OF HUMAN EXPERIENCE. AT THE END OF THE LESSONS THE STUDENT - WILL KNOW IN ITS FUNDAMENTAL THEORETICAL ARTICULATIONS, AND AT LEAST IN PART IN ITS HISTORICAL EVOLUTION, THE RELATIONSHIP EXISTING BETWEEN RHETORIC AND POLITICS - WILL UNDERSTAND THE ROLE THAT LANGUAGE, ESPECIALLY IN ITS RHETORICAL DECLINATION, PLAYS IN DETERMINING POLITICAL ACTION FURTHERMORE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - ANALYZE TEXTS OF MEDIUM COMPLEXITY THAT HAVE PERSUASIVE PURPOSES, HIGHLIGHTING THE SPECIFIC USE THEY MAKE OF RHETORICAL TECHNIQUES - ANALYZE THE TYPE OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RHETORIC AND POLITICS THAT THEY PRESUPPOSE - APPLY THE LOGICAL-ARGUMENTATIVE TOOLS TO A SPECIFIC OBJECT OF ANALYSIS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE, USING THE THEORETICAL TOOLS ACQUIRED, TO: - INDEPENDENTLY ASSESS THE ROLE THAT THE RHETORICAL COMPONENT OF LANGUAGE PLAYS IN THE REPRESENTATION OF REALITY AND MORE SPECIFICALLY IN THE DETERMINATION OF THAT PART OF HUMAN EXPERIENCE PERTAINING TO THE PUBLIC SPHERE - TO EVALUATE AND USE THE TOOLS MADE AVAILABLE BY THE RHETORICAL TRADITION WITH GREATER CRITICAL AWARENESS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - TO ADEQUATELY COMMUNICATE THE CONTENTS AND KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BOTH IN FRONT OF SPECIALISTS AND NON-SPECIALISTS - APPLY THE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN RELATION TO THE INTERTWINING OF RHETORIC AND POLITICS IN COMMUNICATION CONTEXTS OF VARIOUS KINDS - MAKE USE OF THE MAIN RHETORICAL TECHNIQUES IN AN EFFECTIVE WAY THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO USE THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED - TO MOVE INDEPENDENTLY IN SECONDARY AND SPECIALIST LITERATURE - TO IDENTIFY THEMATIC AREAS WORTHY OF FURTHER AND MORE SPECIFIC STUDY |

DURING THE ORAL EXAM, STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE NOT ONLY A GOOD COMMAND OF THE MATERIAL CONTAINED IN THE REFERENCE TEXTS BUT ALSO THE ABILITY TO ARGUE (ALBEIT AT AN ELEMENTARY LEVEL) FOR OR AGAINST THE POSITIONS PRESENTED AND TO APPLY THEIR ARGUMENTATIVE SKILLS IN SOLVING SIMPLE PROBLEMS. THE FINAL JUDGMENT WILL MAINLY TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE STUDENT'S ARGUMENTATIVE SKILLS. |
