Objectives
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: UNDERSTANDING SAFETY SYSTEMS IN THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY TO PREVENT FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS AND MITIGATE THEIR EFFECTS. METHODS FOR IDENTIFICATION AND QUANTIFICATION OF HAZARDS AND RISKS.
APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS - ENGINEERING ANALYSIS: STUDENTS DOWNSTREAM OF THE COURSE WILL BE ABLE TO CARRY OUT RISK ANALYSIS THROUGH A QUANTITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF POTENTIAL DANGERS, ASSESSING THE LIKELIHOOD OF ACCIDENTS AND ASSESSING THE DAMAGE THEY CAUSE.
APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS - ENGINEERING DESIGN: APPLICATION OF RISK ANALYSIS RELATED TO CHEMICAL PROCESSES. DESIGN CRITERIA FOR ACCIDENT PREVENTION AND RISK MITIGATION.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT - ENGINEERING PRACTICE: CAPACITY TO EVALUATE THE SAFETY OF UNIT OPERATIONS IN PLANT AND CHEMICAL PROCESSES.
CROSS-CAPACITIES - LEARNING ABILITIES: UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPTS OF SAFETY IN CHEMICAL PROCESSES SO THAT THE STUDENT CAN BE EASILY INTEGRATED INTO INDUSTRIAL OPERATING ENVIRONMENTS.
CROSS-CAPACITIES - ABILITY TO INVESTIGATE: KNOW HOW TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO DIFFERENT CONTEXTS FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE, AND TO DEEPEN THE TOPICS DEALT WITH USING TEACHING MATERIAL DIFFERENT WITH RESPECT TO THOSE ONES PROPOSED.
TRANSVERSAL SKILLS - COMMUNICATION SKILLS: EXPOSE CLEARLY A TOPIC RELATED TO THE SAFETY ASPECTS OF INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES
Prerequisites
THE PREREQUISITES THAT STUDENTS HAVE TO POSSESS IS THE KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL CHEMISTRY, OF THERMODYNAMICS OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING.
Contents
THE TOPICS DISCUSSED IN THE COURSE ARE:
1) ACCIDENT TYPOLOGIES IN THE CHEMICAL AND PROCESS INDUSTRY (5 H THEORY).
2) THERMAL STABILITY OF THE SUBSTANCES AND THERMAL EXPLOSION. CHEMICAL REACTOR SAFETY (10 H THEORY).
3) FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS. SOURCES OF IGNITION, SELF-IGNITION, MINIMUM IGNITION ENERGIES (10 H THEORY).
4) ESTIMATION OF FLASH POINT TEMPERATURE. FLAMMABILITY LIMITS AND THEIR ESTIMATION. LIMITING OXYGEN CONCENTRATION. FLAMMABILITY DIAGRAMS (12 H THEORY, 3 H EXERCISES, 5 H LABORATORY EXERCISES).
5) DAMAGE ASSESSMENTS BY CHEMICAL AND MECHANICAL EXPLOSION (OVERPRESSURE). TNT EQUIVALENT MASS. LAUNCH OF FRAGMENTS FROM EXPLOSIONS. EXPLOSIONS OF UNRESTRICTED STEAM CLOUDS. BLEVE (8 H THEORY, 2 H EXERCISES).
6) PROCEDURES FOR THE PREVENTION OF FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS / EXPLOSION PROTECTION (5 H THEORY).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE OF SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION IN CHEMICAL PROCESSES CONSISTS IN FRONT LESSONS (50 H), CLASSROOM EXERCISES (5H) AND ACTIVITIES IN LAB (5H) FOR A TOTAL AMOUNT OF 60 HOURS WHICH ARE WORTH 6 CREDITS.
LABORATORY ACTIVITIES ARE, IN PARTICULAR, RELATED TO THE MEASUREMENTS OF FLAMMABLE LIMITS OF A GASEOUS MIXTURE.
ATTENDANCE AT THE LECTURES IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING A FINAL EVALUATION EXAM. THE EXAMINATION INVOLVES AN ORAL TEST.

EVALUATION CRITERION FOR THE MINIMUM THRESHOLD: THE STUDENT MUST DEMONSTRATE THAT HE HAS UNDERSTOOD THE METHODOLOGY TO EVALUATE THE HAZARD ASSOCIATED WITH A GIVEN INCIDENT SCENARIO FOR A DEFINED CHEMICAL PROCESS AND HOW TO APPLY THE CORRECT MODELS FOR QUANTITATIVE DAMAGE ESTIMATION.

EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR EXCELLENCE: EXTREME COMPETENCE OF THE SUBJECT, EXCELLENT EXPRESSION SKILL AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE TECHNIQUES AND METHODOLOGIES ILLUSTRATED.
Texts
1) D.A.CROWL AND J.F.LOUVAR, CHEMICAL PROCESS SAFETY: FUNDAMENTALS WITH APPLICATIONS, 2ND EDITION, PRENTICE HALL PTR. J. STEINBACH, SAFETY ASSESSMENT FOR CHEMICAL PROCESSES, WILEY-VCH.
2) DURING THE COURSE THE TEACHER WILL PROVIDE COPIES OF TRANSPARENCIES AND ADDITIONAL MATERIALS.
