THE CLASS AIMS TO GIVE STUDENTS THE FOLLOWING: •A ROBUST KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE COGNITIVE PROCESSES AND THE BIOLOGICAL BASES UNDERLYING LANGUAGE PROCESSING AND HUMAN COMMUNICATION; •AN ABILITY TO MASTER THE ORGANIZATIONAL CRITERIA OF THE MENTAL LEXICON, THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF FUNCTIONING OF THE LANGUAGE PROCESSING SYSTEM, THE MOST RELEVANT FACTORS AFFECTING PROCESSING OF WORDS, SENTENCES, TEXTS, DISCOURSES IN WRITTEN AND SPOKEN MODALITY BOTH FOR RECOGNITION AND PRODUCTION PROCESSES; •A DEGREE OF FAMILIARITY WITH THE MAIN MODELS OF THEORETICAL EXPLANATION OF COMMUNICATION AND LINGUISTIC PHENOMENA; •AN ABILITY TO UTILIZE THE MAIN METHODS AND EXPERIMENTAL PARADIGMS ADOPTED IN THE FIELD OF THE PSYCHOLOGY OF LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES. FURTHERMORE, THE CLASS WILL PERMIT STUDENTS TO PROPERLY APPLY THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES OF THE PSYCHOLOGY OF LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION IN SEVERAL EMPIRICAL CONTEXTS: EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND TEACHING, MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION, COMMUNICATION SCIENCES, NEW MEDIA, PUBLIC AND CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS. THE CLASS AIMS ALSO TO IMPROVE THE ABILITY TO CRITICALLY ANALYZE THE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE ABOUT LINGUISTIC AND COMMUNICATION PROCESSES. TO FACILITATE THIS, THE SEVERAL PHASES OF THE SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO PSYCHOLINGUISTIC PHENOMENA WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE COURSE: EMPIRICAL OBSERVATION OF THE PHENOMENON, FORMULATION OF A RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS, BUILDING OF AN EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN AND INTERPRETATION OF THE RESULTS WITH REFERENCE TO THE STARTING THEORETICAL BASIS. STUDENTS WILL LEARN HOW TO DEVELOP THEIR OWN INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT ABILITIES BY MAXIMIZING OPPORTUNITIES FOR DISCUSSION WITH THE TEACHER AND OTHER STUDENTS. THE TEACHING PROGRAM WILL AIM TO ENHANCE STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE THE ACQUIRED NOTIONS WITH METHODOLOGICAL ACCURACY AND TO USE THE APPROPRIATE SPECIALIZED JARGON. STUDENTS ATTENDING THE CLASS WILL REACH A LEVEL OF EXPERTISE THAT ALLOWS THEM: •TO DEVELOP THEIR OWN ORIGINAL WORKING HYPOTHESIS IN THE FIELD; •TO IDENTIFY INNOVATIVE CONTEXTS OF EMPIRICAL APPLICATION OF THE ACQUIRED SKILLS. |
