Objectives
The Course of Fundamentals of Geotechnics follows the Course of Soil Mechanics and it provides to the students the methods and tools to tackle and solve problems for simple/complex geotechnical systems. The principal aims of the course are related to engineering practice; however, advanced theoretical advances are also proposed.
Prerequisites
Required knowledge is: the effective stress principle, stress-strain field in porous media; transient and steady-state seepage; principles of mechanical behavior of multiphase porous media.
Contents
Introduction to the Course. In-situ and laboratory investigations. Stress state and stress conditions. Deformation states and failure. Transient and steady-state seepage. Retaining works. Foundations. Slopes. Regulatory aspects.
Teaching Methods
Teaching includes lectures and classroom tutorials. The tutorials deal with the main topics of the course with particular attention to the applications.
Verification of learning
The achievement of the objectives of the course is assessed through an oral exam
