THE COURSE AIMS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO READ TEXTS IN ORDER TO EXTRACT RELEVANT INFORMATION, UNDERSTAND AND ANALYSE BOTH LITERARY AND NON-LITERARY TEXTS. THE COURSE WILL ALSO STRENGTHEN AWARENESS OF MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX, SEMANTICS AND STYLISTICS AND WILL REINFORCE THE WRITTEN AND SPOKEN COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS INTRODUCING TECHNIQUES FOR THE ANALYSIS OF TEXTS FROM A MULTIMODAL PERSPECTIVE. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING STUDENTS WILL: -LEARN HOW TO USE THE MAIN TOOLS OF LANGUAGE LEARNING (DICTIONARIES, GRAMMAR BOOKS, SELF-ACCESS AND MULTIMEDIA TOOLS); -COMPLETE A LEVEL OF COMPETENCE CORRESPONDING TO AN INITIAL C1 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN LANGUAGE FRAMEWORK; -LEARN HOW TO METALINGUISTICALLY REFLECT ON THE LINGUISTIC CHARACTERISTICS AND STRUCTURES OF ENGLISH AT AN INITIAL C1 LEVEL; -LEARN HOW TO ANALYSE WRITTEN AND ORAL ENGLISH THROUGH THE STUDY OF TEXT LINGUISTICS AND STYLISTICS. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -COMMUNICATE IN EVERYDAY SITUATIONS, READ AND UNDERSTAND A WIDE RANGE OF MORE DEMANDING, LONGER TEXTS AS WELL AS RECOGNIZE IMPLICIT HIDDEN MEANING; -ADEQUATELY ELABORATE, PRODUCE AND DISCUSS IN ENGLISH; -USE LANGUAGE FLEXIBLY AND EFFECTIVELY FOR SOCIAL AND ACADEMIC PURPOSES. -PRODUCE CLEAR, WELL-STRUCTURED, DETAILED TEXT ON COMPLEX SUBJECTS, SHOWING CORRECT USE OF ORGANIZATIONAL PATTERNS, CONNECTORS AND COHESIVE DEVICES. MAKING JUDGEMENTS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -FORMULATE AND DISCUSS HYPOTHESES, CONTRAST AND JUDGE TEXTS; -HIGHLIGHT LINGUISTIC AND STYLISTICS FEATURES OF TEXTS BELONGING TO DIFFERENT GENRES AND DEVELOP TEXTUAL COMPETENCE SKILLS; -CARRY OUT CRITICAL TEXT ANALYSES OF LITERARY AND MULTIMODAL TEXTS; -UNDERSTAND HOW CREATIVE WRITING WORKS AND PRODUCE CREATIVE TEXTS THROUGH INTERSEMIOTIC TRANSLATION (FROM PAINTING TO SHORT FICTION – FROM POETRY TO VIDEOS). COMMUNICATION SKILLS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -COMMUNICATE IN ENGLISH; -APPROPRIATELY ACT IN THE VARIOUS SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXTS, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THEIR OBJECTIVES AND THE INTERLOCUTORS; -PRESENT AND COMMUNICATE THE RESULTS OF THEIR RESEARCH THROUGH TEXTS AND DIGITAL TOOLS. LEARNING SKILLS STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: -USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND DIGITAL RESOURCES; -UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET NON VERBAL LANGUAGE AND TRANSFORM IT INTO VERBAL LANGUAGE AND VICE VERSA: FROM IMAGES TO WORDS AND FROM WORDS TO IMAGES; -PROCEED WITH SOME CONTINUOUS UPDATING OF THEIR KNOWLEDGE, MAKING USE OF ITS MOST RELEVANT SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE. |

STUDENTS WILL ANALYSE TEXTS BELONGING TO DIFFERENT GENRES FROM A LINGUISTIC AND STYLISTIC POINT OF VIEW. THE GENRES TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT BELONG TO LITERATURE, CINEMA, TV, JOURNALISM AND ADVERTISING. ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL WORK ON SOME TASKS IN GROUPS DURING THE YEAR AND WILL HAND IN A SHORT STORY AS FINAL WORK. TOGETHER WITH A THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL PART WITH THE OFFICIAL TEACHER, STUDENTS WILL TRAIN THEIR LANGUAGE ABILITIES WITH MOTHER TONGUE EXPERTS. THE COURSE IS ANNUAL (OCTOBER-MAY) |

THE EXAM IS DIVIDED INTO TWO MAIN PARTS: 1)A WRITTEN TEST; 2)AN ORAL INTERVIEW. STUDENTS MUST PASS THE WRITTEN EXAM IN ORDER TO TAKE THE ORAL PART. STUDENTS ATTENDING REGULARLY WILL HAVE ACCESS TO TESTS/TASKS IN ITINERE THAT WILL DISPENSE THEM FROM SOME PARTS OF THE PROGRAMME. END OF YEAR WRITTEN EXAM READING AND INTERPRETATION READING COMPREHENSION WITH MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS, WRITE A SHORT SUMMARY OF A SELECTED PARAGRAPH, PROVIDE SYNONYMS/ANTONYMS FOR WORDS IN THE TEXT. USE OF ENGLISH A VARIETY OF EXERCISES TESTING GRAMMAR, VOCABULARY AND FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE COVERED IN THE COURSEBOOK, GRAMMAR BOOK AND WORD SKILLS BOOK. WRITING END OF YEAR ORAL EXAM LISTENING THERE WILL BE A LISTENING TEST ON THE DAY OF THE ORAL EXAM. FOR STUDENTS REGULARLY ATTENDING THE LANGUAGE COURSE, THERE WILL BE A LISTENING TEST EACH TERM. SPEAKING DURING THE SPEAKING EXAM, STUDENTS WILL BE EXAMINED IN PAIRS AND WILL BE EXPECTED TO DISCUSS THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE BOOK AND WORD SKILLS BOOK. AFTER THE LISTENING TEST AND THE SPEAKING PART WITH MOTHER TONGUE EXPERTS STUDENTS WILL HAVE A FINAL INTERVIEW WITH THE OFFICIAL TEACHER ON THE TOPICS INTRODUCED DURING THE COURSE. ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL WRITE A SHORT STORY OF ABOUT 800/100 WORDS AND COMPLETE SOME TASKS ASSIGNED DURING THE COURSE. NON ATTENDING STUDENTS ARE INVITED TO CONTACT THE PROFESSOR IN ORDER TO GET INFORMATION ON THE PROGRAMME AND THE EXAM. |
