Objectives
THE TEACHING AIMS TO PROVIDE THE NECESSARY TOOLS TO UNDERSTAND THE EVOLUTION OF POLITICAL-DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS FROM 1870 TO THE PRESENT. THE GOAL IS TO DEVELOP IN THE STUDENT THE ABILITY TO CRITICALLY ANALYZE BOTH THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS FROM THE DECLINE OF THE POST-NAPOLEONIC SYSTEM TO THE NEW WORLD ORDER ESTABLISHED AFTER 1989, AND THE RELATED HISTORIOGRAPHY ON THE SUBJECT. IN THE LIGHT OF THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO DISTINGUISH AND INTERPRET NOT ONLY THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM AS THEY HAVE BEEN CONFIGURED FROM THE POST-NAPOLEONIC ERA ONWARDS, BUT ALSO THE CHANGES IN RELATIONS BETWEEN THE STATES ON A WORLD SCALE BEFORE AND AFTER. AFTER THE COLLAPSE OF THE BIPOLAR ORDER ESTABLISHED WITH THE COLD WAR.

Contents
THE COURSE WILL BE STRUCTURED IN THREE PARTS. THE FIRST WILL INTRODUCE THE KEY CONCEPTS AND TERMS OF THE DISCIPLINE, ADDRESSING THE ISSUES OF THE EVOLUTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM FROM THE DECLINE OF THE POST-NAPOLEONIC ORDER TO THE SECOND WORLD WAR. THE SECOND WILL EXAMINE THE CHARACTERISTICS AND STAGES OF THE BIPOLAR OPPOSITION BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND THE SOVIET UNION, FROM THE FORMATION OF THE BLOCS TO THE COLLAPSE OF THE USSR. THE THIRD PART WILL FOCUS ON THE TRANSFORMATIONS THAT FOLLOWED 1989 AND ON THE CHALLENGES OF THE CURRENT INTERNATIONAL ORDER.

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES LECTURES (30 HOURS) AND EXERCISES (10 HOURS). DURING THE LESSONS THE TOPICS WILL BE PRESENTED BY PROVIDING INTERPRETATIVE KEYS AND LINES OF INTERPRETATION OF THE EVENTS AND PROBLEMS DEALT WITH. THE EXERCISES WILL BE AIMED AT DEVELOPING STUDENTS' CRITICAL ABILITY STARTING FROM THE READING OF DOCUMENTS INDICATED BY THE TEACHER. ATTENDANCE, ALTHOUGH NOT MANDATORY, IS RECOMMENDED
Verification of learning
THE VERIFICATION OF LEARNING WILL TAKE THROUGHT A FINAL ORAL TEST TO ASSESS THE STUDENT'S KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO DEBATE ABOUT THE EVENTS EXAMINED DURING THE COURSE AND ABOUT THE TEXTS INDICATED IN THE BIBLIOGRAPHY.
