Objectives
THE COURSE GIVES TO THE STUDENTS PROPER TOOLS FOR ANALYZING AND SYNTHESIZING ANTENNAS, AS WELL AS, IT PROVIDES THE FUNDAMENTALS OF A RADIO LINK DESIGN. IN PARTICULAR, THE TECHNIQUES FOR THE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF HIGH FREQUENCIES ANTENNAS ARE STUDIED IN DETAIL.
Prerequisites
TO PROFITABLY REACH THE GOAL OF THE COURSE, THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS ARE NEEDED: A) GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS AND PHYSICS; B) SOUND KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL LAWS OF ELECTROMAGNETICS, ACQUIRED IN A FIRST LEVEL COURSE OF ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS.
Contents
MAXWELL'S EQUATIONS. BOUNDARY CONDITIONS. RADIATION FROM ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC SOURCES, FAR-FIELD CONDITIONS. IMAGE THEORY. LINEAR WIRE ANTENNAS. HALLEN'S INTEGRAL EQUATION. PARAMETERS CHARACTERIZING A TRANSMITTING OR RECEIVING ANTENNA. RECIPROCITY THEOREM. FRIIS’ TRANSMISSION EQUATION. RADAR RANGE EQUATION. EQUIVALENCE THEOREM. (HOURS: 20 THEORY - 2 EXERCISES)

RADIATION FROM AN OPEN-ENDED RECTANGULAR WAVEGUIDE. PLANE-WAVE REPRESENTATION OF THE FIELD. ASYMPTOTIC EVALUATION OF THE FAR-FIELD. RADIATION FROM APERTURES. NEAR-FIELD-FAR-FIELD TRANSFORMATION WITH PLANE-RECTANGULAR SCANNING.(HOURS: 10 THEORY - 3 LABORATORY)

RADAR CROSS SECTION (RCS) OF A CIRCULAR DISH AND OF A DIHEDRAL CORNER REFLECTOR. EVALUATION OF THE FIELD RADIATED BY A CENTERED PARABOLIC REFLECTOR VIA THE UTD, THE APERTURE METHOD, AND THE EQUIVALENT EDGE CURRENT METHOD. (HOURS: 13 THEORY - 2 EXERCISES)

PROGRAM TRAINING FOR THE NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF THE MAXWELL’S EQUATIONS FOR ANTENNAS DESIGN: EVALUATION OF ANTENNA NEAR FIELD AND FAR FIELD; EVALUATION OF ANTENNA CHARACTERISTICS (RADIATION PATTERN, DIRECTIVITY, GAIN, IMPEDANCE, BANDWIDTH, AND POLARIZATION); DESIGN OF MICROSTRIP PATCH ANTENNAS. (HOURS: 2 THEORY - 8 EXERCISES)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE, TAUGHT IN ITALIAN, MAINLY INCLUDES THEORETICAL LESSONS, BUT THERE ARE ALSO SOME NUMERICAL AND LABORATORY PRACTICES. THE NUMERICAL PRACTICES ARE CONCERNED WITH THE USE OF SOFTWARE TOOLS FOR THE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF ANTENNAS. WHEREAS, THE LABORATORY ONES DEAL WITH THE MEASUREMENTS OF SOME ANTENNA PARAMETERS. FOR INSTANCE, THE DETERMINATION OF THE ANTENNA RADIATION PATTERN FROM FAR-FIELD OR NEAR-FIELD MEASUREMENTS PERFORMED IN AN ANECHOIC CHAMBER. SOME SEMINARS ON THE NONREDUNDANT SAMPLING REPRESENTATIONS OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD AND THEIR APPLICATIONS TO THE NEAR-FIELD-FAR-FIELD TRANSFORMATION TECHNIQUES ARE ALSO PLANNED.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE FIXED GOALS WILL BE ASSESSED BY AN ORAL EXAMINATION OF AN AVERAGE DURATION OF ABOUT 60 MINUTES, AIMED AT EVALUATING THE OVERALL LEVEL IN THE LEARNING OF THE CONCEPTS PRESENTED IN THE COURSE AND THE STUDENT’S ABILITY TO APPLY THEM. SUCH AN EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF AT LEAST THREE QUESTIONS ON DIFFERENT TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE. THE EVALUATION GRADE RANGES FROM 18/30 TO 30/30 CUM LAUDE. THE MINIMUM EVALUATION GRADE (18/30) IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A JUST SUFFICIENT AND FRAGMENTARY KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE AND SHOWS A LIMITED ABILITY IN APPLYING THEM. THE EVALUATION GRADE (30/30) IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE AND DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE AND OF THE STUDIED METHODS AND SHOWS A REMARKABLE ABILITY IN APPLYING THEM.
THE MAXIMUM EVALUATION GRADE (30/30 CUM LAUDE) IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE STUDENT:
-DEMONSTRATES A REMARKABLE MASTERY OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE AND OF THE STUDIED METHODS;
-ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS IN A CLEAR AND EXHAUSTIVE WAY, BY SHOWING A VERY APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE AND JUDGEMENT AUTONOMY;
-DEMONSTRATES TO BE ABLE IN APPLYING THE STUDIED METHODS ALSO IN CONTEXTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE TACKLED DURING THE COURSE.
THE STUDENT CAN DIVIDE THE ORAL EXAMINATION INTO THREE PARTIAL EXAMINATIONS (EACH OF THEM EXEMPTS FROM THE RESPECTIVE PART OF THE COURSE) PLUS A FINAL ONE, WHICH WILL BE CONCLUDED WITH THE OVERALL EVALUATION. THIS LAST WILL PROPERLY TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE PREVIOUSLY OBTAINED PARTIAL RESULTS. THE DATE OF EACH PARTIAL EXAMINATION IS AGREED WITH THE STUDENT, BUT ALWAYS FOLLOWS THE END OF THE LESSONS RELATED TO THE CORRESPONDING PART OF THE COURSE.
