THE COURSE AIMS TO INTRODUCE THE BASIC TOOLS AND CONCEPTS OF ECONOMICS, USEFUL FOR UNDERSTANDING THE EVOLUTION OF THE TECHNOLOGICAL PROCESS AND THE FUNCTIONING OF ECONOMIC-BUSINESS SYSTEMS. THE COURSE OFFERS A LONG-TERM HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE DYNAMICS OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH FROM THE PRE-INDUSTRIAL AGE TO THE 20TH CENTURY WITH A SPECIAL FOCUS ON THE ROLE PLAYED BY TECHNOLOGY. IN PARTICULAR, IT ANALYSES THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PRE-INDUSTRIAL ECONOMIES AND THE REASONS FOR GROWTH DIFFERENTIALS, AS WELL AS THE CHARACTERISTICS AND IMPACT OF THE INDUSTRIALISATION PROCESS; ECONOMIC INEQUALITIES AND DIFFERENT LEVELS OF DEVELOPMENT; INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND GLOBALISATION; THE DYNAMICS OF CAPITALISM; THE ROLE OF THE STATE AND ECONOMIC POLICIES; ECONOMIC ACTORS. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET, ALSO IN COMPARATIVE TERMS, THE STRUCTURE OF ECONOMIC PHENOMENA AND DYNAMICS FROM A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE. TEACHING WILL ENABLE THEM TO APPLY THEIR ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING TO THE EVENTS THAT CHARACTERISE ECONOMIC DYNAMICS AND AFFECT THE PROCESSES OF DEVELOPMENT, TRANSFORMATION AND GROWTH. |

THE COURSE INCLUDES THEORETICAL LECTURES AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES. THEORETICAL LESSONS INTRODUCT THE TOOLS AND BASIC CONCEPTS OF ECONOMICS, USEFUL FOR UNDERSTANDING ECONOMIC BUSINESS SYSTEMS, THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND THEIR HISTORICAL EVOLUTION. DURING THE EXERCISES THE STUDENT IS ASKED TO SOLVE PROBLEMS RELATED TO ECONOMIC ANALYSIS AND THE UNDERSTANDING OF HISTORICAL PHENOMENA. THE SOLVING METHOD CONSISTS OF UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM, PLANNING THE SOLUTION, AND FINALLY SOLVING IT. THE LATTER STAGE PROMOTES THE ABILITY TO ASSESS THE REASONABLENESS OF THE ANSWER AND TO CHECK CONSISTENCY WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF ECONOMICS AND HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE COURSE PROVIDES FOR A FINAL WRITTEN TEST TO VERIFY THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO MASTER THE THEORETICAL ASPECTS; TO CRITICALLY AND DIACHRONICALLY ANALYSE THE MAIN PHENOMENA AND CASES UNDER STUDY, SETTING THEM IN DIFFERENT TERRITORIAL CONTEXTS AND HISTORICAL PHASES. THE FINAL WRITTEN TEST MAY BE SUPPLEMENTED BY AN ORAL TEST FOR ORGANISATIONAL REQUIREMENTS. ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY AN ASSESSMENT IN THIRTIETHS. THE MINIMUM ASSESSMENT LEVEL (18) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT HAS A FRAGMENTARY KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS AND SHOWS A LIMITED ABILITY TO USE THEM IN THE CONTEXT OF STUDY. THE HIGHEST LEVEL (30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE AND THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE METHODOLOGIES AND TOOLS AND HAS A REMARKABLE ABILITY TO USE THEM IN THE CONTEXT OF STUDY. HONOURS IS AWARDED WHEN THE CANDIDATE DEMONSTRATES SIGNIFICANT MASTERY OF THE METHODOLOGIES AND TOOLS AND SHOWS REMARKABLE OWNERSHIP OF LANGUAGE AND CAPACITY FOR AUTONOMOUS ELABORATION EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER. |
