Objectives
POLITICAL ECOLOGY IS A FIELD OF STUDY THAT AIMS TO UNDERSTAND THE POLITICAL AND SOCIAL DIMENSION OF NATURE, DEFINING THE NATURE AS PART OF THE SOCIAL AND POWER RELATIONS OF PRODUCTION.
THE SO-CALLED ENVIRONMENTAL QUESTION CANNOT BE THOUGHT AS SELF-SUFFICIENT, AS A CRISIS LINKED TO GENERAL POLLUTION PROCESSES OR ECOLOGICAL DEGRADATION. IT MUST BE UNDERSTOOD FROM AN HISTORICAL POINT OF VIEW, CONNECTED TO THE CURRENT ECONOMIC, POLITICAL AND CULTURAL STRUCTURES.
IN THIS ANALYTICAL FRAMEWORK, ALL SOCIAL AND SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL REPRODUCTION ACTIVITIES ARE CENTRAL. AT THE SAME TIME, THE SET OF CONFLICTS AND SOCIAL PRACTICES WHICH TEND TO REDEFINE THE FORMS OF PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF SOCIAL WEALTH ARE CENTRAL, INCLUDING THE GRASSROOTS AND TRANSNATIONAL SOCIAL MOVEMENTS WHICH ACT WITHIN THE EPOCAL PHENOMENA OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING.
THE EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES ARE THEREFORE ORIENTED TO LEARN THE MAIN CATEGORIES OF POLITICAL ECOLOGY AND THEIR USEFULNESS FOR UNDERSTANDING CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY. AT THE SAME TIME, THEY ARE ORIENTED TO KNOW AND USE DATA AND METHODOLOGIES FOR STUDYING THE SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL CHANGES AND CONDITIONS THAT CHARACTERIZE THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROPOSE BASIC KNOWLEDGE ON SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL RELATIONS AND THE POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC POWER STRUCTURES THAT INFLUENCE SOCIOECOLOGICAL RELATIONS. STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP THE CAPACITY TO APPLY THE EPISTEMOLOGICAL, METHODOLOGICAL, AND CONCEPTUAL KNOWLEDGE STUDIED TO THE FIELDS OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL CONFLICTS AND MOVEMENTS.
THEY WILL ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT SOME OF THE MAIN APPROACHES RELATED TO POLITICAL ECOLOGY, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THOSE OF THE WORLD SYSTEM, WORLD-ECOLOGY AND DECOLONIAL PERSPECTIVE APPLIED TO SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL RELATIONS.

CAPACITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE COURSE AIMS TO PUT STUDENTS IN THE CONDITION OF:
- TO HAVE ACQUIRED AN ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE OF THE POLITICAL AND SOCIAL PROCESSES THAT INVOLVE SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL RELATIONS;
- TO HAVE ACQUIRED THE ABILITY TO ELABORATE ANALYSIS AND RESEARCH REPORTS ON SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL CHANGES, USING CATEGORIES, METHODOLOGIES AND DATA PRESENTED AND ANALYZED DURING THE COURSE:
- TO HAVE ACQUIRED THE ABILITY TO INTERPRET INDEPENDENTLY THE DATA AND INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL DIMENSIONS AND RELATIONS OF THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD.
Prerequisites
NONE
Contents
THE COURSE PRESENTS SOME OF THE MAIN CATEGORIES AND THEMES FOR THE ANALYSIS OF POLITICAL ECOLOGY. AMONG THE CATEGORIES ANALYSED ARE THE FOLLOWING: NATURE, VALUE, EXTRACTIVISM, INTERSECTIONALITY, OIKEIOS, WORK, SOCIAL REPRODUCTION, CARE, SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL MOVEMENTS, WASTE, SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL RELATIONS, MIGRATION IN SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL TRANSFORMATIONS.

THESE THEMES AND CATEGORIES WILL BE ANALYSED IN A HISTORICAL AND CONCEPTUAL PERSPECTIVE THROUGH THE BOOK EDITED BY LUIGI PELLIZZONI. THE THEMES IDENTIFIED WILL BE DEEPENED THROUGH THE PRESENTATION OF CASES AND ACCESS TO SPECIFIC DATABASES FOR THE ANALYSIS OF SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL CHANGES AND CONDITIONS.

FURTHER CONTENTS OF THE COURSE WILL RELATE TO THE STUDY OF THE WORLD-ECOLOGY PROSPECTIVE, FOCUSING, IN PARTICULAR, ON THE ELABORATION PROPOSED BY JASON W. MOORE.

A SPECIFIC FOCUS WILL BE PROPOSED ON THE THE THEME OF NUCLEAR ENERGY, REFERRING TO THE PROPOSED READINGS BY DI DARIO PACCINO AND GÜNTHER ANDERS.
Teaching Methods
FRONT-LESSONS WITH THE HELP OF SLIDES AND VIDEO;

CASE STUDIES;

SOME SEMINARS TO DEEPEN SOME TOPICS OF THE COURSE

PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS DURING THE LESSONS, ALSO WRITING INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP PAPERS.
Verification of learning
THE EXAMEN IS BASED ON TWO TESTS.

1) THE FIRST ONE CONSISTS IN WRITING A SHORT PAPER ABOUT ONE OF THE TOPICS ADDRESSED DURING THE COURSE (DIMENSIONS: BETWEEN 15 AND 20 THOUSAND CHARACTERS). THE SUBJECT OF THE SHORT ARTICLE WILL BE AGREED IN ADVANCE WITH THE TEACHER BY E-MAIL. THE FINAL TEXT MUST BE DELIVERED BY EMAIL NO LATER THAN THREE DAYS FROM THE DATE OF THE ORAL TEST. THE EVALUATION WILL BE BASED ON THE QUALITY OF THE TEXT AND USE OF DATA AND ANALYTICAL CATEGORIES PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE.

2) THE SECOND ONE IS AN ORAL TEST. IT WILL CONSIST OF AN ORAL EXAM THAT PROVIDES FOR THE PRELIMINARY DISCUSSION OF THE WRITTEN PAPER AND AT LEAST TWO QUESTIONS WHOSE TOPICS ARE CHOSEN FROM THOSE LISTED IN THE PROGRAM AND ARE INTENDED TO FILL ANY GAPS MANIFESTED IN THE WRITTEN TEST.
IN THIS PART WILL BE TESTED:
- KNOWLEDGE LEARNED IN THE COURSE;
- THE ABILITY TO LINK DIFFERENT ANALYTICAL CATEGORIES

THE FINAL JUDGMENT DEPENDS ON THE EVALUATION OF BOTH TESTS, CONSIDERED WITH THE SAME IMPORTANCE.
