THE COURSE PROVIDES THE NECESSARY SKILLS TO SET UP ONE'S OWN RESEARCH ON ANY KIND OF TOPIC, PARTICULARLY OF HISTORICAL INTEREST. ONE WILL ANALYSE THE AVAILABLE HISTORICAL SOURCES ON VARIOUS TOPICS: EVERYDAY LIFE, WORK AND EDUCATIONAL JOURNEYS, BELIEFS, FEELINGS, IDEALS AND POLITICAL IDEAS OF MEN AND WOMEN IN THE MODERN AGE. IN PARTICULAR, SOME PRIMARY SOURCES ON THEMES SUCH AS THE INVENTION OF THE PRINTING PRESS AND THE NEWS, DISEASES AND REMEDIES,FAMILIES AND WOMEN, ECONOMIC THEORIES, THE REVOLUTIONS WILL BE DISCUSSED. SOME LESSONS WILL BE DEDICATED TO HISTORIOGRAPHIC SCHOOLS, FROM THE ANNALES TO THE CULTURAL HISTORY TO SOME OF THE MOST RECENT APPROACHES SUCH AS THE PUBLIC HISTORY. |

AFTER A BRIEF INTRODUCTION ON THE VARIOUS TYPES OF SOURCES - MANUSCRIPT, PRINTED, ARCHIVAL, LIBRARY, NEWSPAPERS, GAZETTES, ETC. - THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THE TWENTIETH-CENTURY AND MORE RECENT HISTORIOGRAPHICAL APPROACHES AND THEN FOCUS ON THE ANALYSIS OF SOME OF THE SOURCES USEFUL FOR THE STUDY OF SOME SPECIFIC THEMES. THE LECTURES WILL COVER THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: SOURCES FROM THE PAST, TYPOLOGIES, RICHNESS OF INFORMATION ON SEVERAL LEVELS (2 HOURS) THE REVOLUTION OF THE ANNALES (2 HOURS) THE SECOND PHASE: BRAUDEL (2 HOURS) THE RISE OF THE HISTORY OF SENSIBILITIES: ANALYSIS OF THEMES SUCH AS CHILDHOOD, FEARS, THE AFTERLIFE (2 HOURS) CULTURAL HISTORY; EDWARD THOMPSON, LYNN HUNT, PETER BURKE (2 HOURS) THE MEDIA FROM THE INVENTION OF THE PRESS TO THE INTERNET (2 HOURS) FOUCAULT'S WORKS (2 HOURS) DISCIPLINE AND PUNISH: THE BIRTH OF THE PRISON (2 HOURS) THE SPIES OF A TEXT AND MICROHISTORY (2 HOURS) STRATEGIES IN EVERYDAY LIFE STRATEGIES IN EVERYDAY LIFE (2 HOURS) THE NEW APPROACHES: ENVIROMENTAL HISTORY, PUBLIC HISTORY, WORLD HISTORY, HISTORY OF EMOTIONS (2 HOURS) PUBLIC HISTORY: SOME EXAMPLES OF CANCEL CULTURE (2 HOURS) EVERYDAY LIFE, WOMEN, CLASSES (2 HOURS) THE EXERCISES WILL BE INTRODUCED BY A LECTURE BY THE LECTURER AND A COMMENTARY ON SOME SOURCES ON THE TOPICS: THE MERCANTILISM OF MUNN AND COLBERT (2 HOURS) PHYSIOCRACY AND ADAM SMITH (2 HOURS) SCIENTIFIC THINKING AND EPIDEMICS (2 HOURS) MEDICINE: SECRETS, ODD AND GOOD REMEDIES IN THE EARLY MODERN AGE (2 HOURS) REVOLTS AND THEIR TEXTS: SOME CASE STUDIES (2 HOURS) HOW TO SET UP A SEARCH: ‘CLASSIC’ AND WEB RESOURCES (2 HOURS) THE EXPERIENCE OF AN ARCHIVIST (2 HOURS) |

THE LESSONS WILL BE MAINLY FRONTAL; HOWEVER, THERE WILL BE A WRITTEN TEST; IN ONE OF THE LAST LESSONS, THE STUDENTS WILL REPLY TO ANOTHER WRITTEN TEXT (7-9 QUESTIONS). THE FINAL MARK WILL BE THE RESULT FO THESE TESTS BUT ALSO OF THE ORAL EXAM. DURING THE EXAM THE STUDENT WILL SHOW HIS PRACTICAL AND THEORETICAL COMPETENCE IN HIS APPROACH TO THE HISTORICAL SOURCE. |

THE EXAM WILL VERIFY THE STUDENT'S CAPACITY OF COMMENTING ON A HISTORICAL SOURCE AND ILLUSTRATING THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE VARIOUS HISTORIOGRAPHICAL APPROACHES STUDIED. THE MARK WILL BE THE RESULT OF THE WRITTEN TESTS AND OF THE ORAL, FINAL EXAMINATION. |
