Objectives
UNDERSTANDING THE HISTORICAL EVOLUTION OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC INSTITUTIONS THAT LED TO ITS LONG AND GRADUAL DIVERGENCE FROM THE WESTERN DEVELOPMENT.

THIS COURSE ANALYZES THE HISTORY OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE (FROM THE EMERGENCE OF THE STATE TO ITS FALL SOON AFTER THE WWI) AND WILL FOCUS ON HOW THE INSTITUTIONS THAT CHARACTERIZE THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE REGION SHAPED THE ECONOMIC RELATIONS WITH WESTERN EUROPE. DURING THE COURSE IT WILL FACE ISSUES SUCH AS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ISLAM AND UNDERDEVELOPMENT IN THE MIDDLE EAST; THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE OTTOMAN GOVERNMENT'S INSTITUTIONAL REFORMS; THE ECONOMIC ASCENT OF THE ETHNIC MINORITIES AND THE EMERGENCE OF NATIONALISM; THE EUROPEAN FINANCIAL PENETRATION INTO THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE.
