Objectives
The course aims to provide the basics to develop a drug trial , through the knowledge of the most commonly used in animal testing methods as well as the fundamentals of statistics applied to biology , referring also to the current laws governing animal testing .
The student at the end of the course will demonstrate that it can manage: 1) drug testing methods in vitro and in vivo ; 2 ) supply , housing and handling of laboratory animals ; 3 ) type of animals to be used ; 4 ) regulation in housing and the use of animals in experiments ; 5 ) analysis of the experimental data by the use of statistical tests .
Prerequisites
THIS COURSE REQUIRES THAT THE STUDENT HAS BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR BIOLOGY, PHYSIOLOGY, ANATOMY, AND PATHOLOGY. IN ORDER TO APPROACH THIS COURSE PROGRAME THE PHARMACOLOGY COURSE/EXAM IS INDISPENSABLE.
Contents
GENERAL SECTION
IN VITRO AND IN VIVO PHARMACOLOGICAL TESTING: GENERALITY, METHOD OF EXECUTION AND EVALUATION OF RESULTS. LABORATORY ANIMALS: TYPES, SUPPLY, STACKING AND HANDLING. LEGISLATION FOR ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION. CELL CULTURES: HINTS, CHOICE OF CELL TYPE (PRIMARY OR SECONDARY CULTURE).
STUDY OF SOME PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES
ANTI-HYPERTENSIVE ACTIVITY; ANTI-CLOTHING ACTIVITY; ANTI-DIABETIC ACTIVITIES; BRONCHODILATOR ACTIVITIES; ANTI-INFLAMMATORY, ANTI-AUTOIMMUNE ACTIVITIES, ANALGESIA; DRUGS THAT INTERFERE WITH GASTRO-INTESTINAL ACTIVITY; IMMUNOTHERAPY; ANTITUMORAL ACTIVITY: ANIMAL MODELS AND BIOPHARMACOLOGICAL ASSAYS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS OF 40 HOURS (5CFU) WHICH COMPRISE BOTH CLASSES (34 HOURS) AND AT LEAST 6 HOURS OF PRACTICAL BIOPHARMACOLOGICAL LABORATORY.
THE ATTENDANCE OF CLASSES IS COMPULSORY IN THAT THE STUDENT HAS TO ATTEND AT LEAST 70% OF THE COURSE.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING A THIRTY-YEAR EVALUATION EXAM.
THE EXAM CONSIST OF AN ORAL EXAMINATION IN THAT THE PROFESSOR WILL REQUIRE A DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS OF THE TEACHING PROGRAM. IT INTENDS TO ASCERTAIN THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT, AS WELL AS TO VERIFY THE ABILITY TO EXPOSURE BY USING THE APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO AUTONOMOUSLY ORGANIZE THE EXHIBITION ON THE SAME SUBJECTS WITH THEORETICAL CONTENT. IN ADDITION, THE ORAL EXAMINATION INCLUDES THE PRESENTATION OF A TECHNICAL REPORT PRODUCED BY THE STUDENT INDEPENDENTLY OR IN A GROUP ON A TOPIC INDICATED BY THE PROFESSOR.
THE ORAL TEST CONSISTS OF A DISCUSSION OF A DURATION OF NO MORE THAN ABOUT 40 MINUTES, AIMING TO ASCERTAIN:
• THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE OF THEORETICAL AND APPLIED CONTENT
• THE LEVEL OF COMPETENCE ACHIEVED IN THE EXHIBITION: LANGUAGE PROPERTIES, LOGICAL-EXECUTIVE AND SYNTHESIS CAPABILITIES, ABILITY TO ARGUE, AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT IN PROPOSING THE MOST APPROPRIATE APPROACH TO ARGUING WHAT IS REQUIRED.
Texts
H. GERHARD VOGEL, WOLFGANG VOGEL-DRUG DISCOVERY AND EVALUATION: PHARMACOLOGICAL ASSAYS.
OTHER TEACHING MATERIALS WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE BY THE PROFESSOR DURING THE COURSE.
