Objectives | |
---|---|
The teaching is directed to the acquisition of knowledge and the comprehension of classification, morphology and virulence factors of the main microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) with particular reference to human microbiota, and apply the acquired concepts to herbal medicine field. Applying the acquired skills, the student should be able to understand basic bacteriology and mycology, so to deal both theoretically and practically with the different work situations that will be encountered. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
To have passed Biology and Pharmaceutical Botany |
Contents | |

SPONTANEOUS GENERATION; MICROBIAL THEORY; KOCH POSTULATES; CELLULAR THEORY(6H) PROKARYOTIC CELL, EUKARYOTIC CELL. BACTERIAL MORPHOLOGY, (6H) CELL CULTURES (2H OF LABORATORY) BACTERIAL WALL AND GRAM STAINING (3H LABORATORY) MICROBIAL GROWTH CURVE. SPORULATION (5H). BACTERIAL TOXINS (4 H). HUMAN MICROBIOTA, (ENTEROCOCCUS, LACTOBACILLUS, BIFIDOBACTERIUM) (4 H). ENTEROBACTERIACEAE (3 H). PSEUDOMONAS (3 H). STREPTOCOCCUS (2 H). STAPHYOCOCCUS (2H). BACILLACEAE (2H). MYCOLOGY: DIMORPHIC FUNGI; MR CANDIDA; ASPERGILLUS (6H). |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE COURSE INCLUDES LECTURES FOR A TOTAL OF 48 HOURS (6 CREDITS), WHICH TAKE PLACE IN THE CLASSROOM WITH THE HELP OF POWERPOINT PROJECTIONS. ATTENDANCE OF LESSONS IN THE CLASSROOM IS MANDATORY. IN ORDER TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 70% OF THE HOURS PROVIDED FOR IN THE COURSE |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING A SINGLE EXAM WITH EVALUATION IN THIRTIETHS. THE EXAM INCLUDES AN ORAL TEST LASTING AN AVERAGE OF 20-30 MINUTES, DURING WHICH QUESTIONS WILL BE PROPOSED ON THE ORIGIN OF MICROBIOLOGY AS SCIENCE; ON CLASSIFICATION, STRUCTURE, PHYSIOLOGY, BACTERIAL AND FUNGAL; THE MINIMUM MARK FOR PASSING THE EXAM IS 18/30 AND WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE STUDENT WHO SHOWS KNOWLEDGE ON CLASSIFICATION, BACTERIAL AND FUNGAL STRUCTURE, BUT LIMITED ABILITY TO ASSOCIATE THE DIFFERENT STRUCTURES AND MORPHOLOGIES WITH SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS. THE HONORS CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WHO WILL REACH THE MAXIMUM MARK OF 30/30 AND DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY HAVE COMPLETE MASTERY OF THE MECHANISMS OF COMPETITION AND MICROBIAL COLONIZATION, DEMONSTRATING THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN CLASS. |
