KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS: CHARACTERISTICS OF CATALYSIS AND ITS TYPOLOGIES WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS. MAIN TECHNIQUES OF PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSTS WITH POROSITY AND NANOSCALE TEXTURAL PROPERTIES. MAIN CATALYTIC PROCESSES FOR THE ABATEMENT OF POLLUTANTS IN GASEOUS STREAMS COMING FROM FIXED AND MOBILE COMBUSTION PROCESSES. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: KNOW HOW TO DESIGN NEW CATALYSTS ACCORDING TO THE SPECIFIC PRODUCTION NEEDS. KNOW HOW TO DESIGN A NEW HETEROGENEOUS CATALYST ACCORDING TO THE NEEDS OF THE REACTION. INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: KNOW HOW TO OPERATE ON THE OPERATING PARAMETERS OF A CATALYTIC REACTOR TO OPTIMIZE ITS OPERATION. COMMUNICATION SKILLS:UNDERSTANDING THE TERMINOLOGY USED IN THE APPLICATION OF HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS IN THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY. KNOW HOW TO WORK IN GROUPS AND TO ORALLY PRESENT AN ARGUMENT RELEVANT TO THE APPLICATION OF CATALYSIS IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING. LEARNING SKILLS: KNOW HOW TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO DIFFERENT CONTEXTS FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE, AND TO DEEPEN THE TOPICS DISCUSSED USING DIFFERENT TEACHING MEDIA WITH RESPECT TO THOSE PROPOSED. THE TOPICS DISCUSSED IN THE COURSE ARE: 1) DEFINITION AND ROLE OF THE CATALYST IN A CHEMICAL REACTION (THEORY 3H). 2) PREPARATION OF CATALYSTS: GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF THE PREPARATION METHODS OF BULK CATALYSTS AND SUPPORTS. UNIT OPERATIONS FOR THE PREPARATION OF HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSTS (THEORY 8H). 3) ACID, BASIC AND POLYFUNCTIONAL CATALYSTS. ZEOLITES IN HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS (THEORY 6H). 4) ADSORPTION: PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL ADSORPTION, MODELS OF ISOTHERMS ADSORPTION, EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES FOR ADSORPTION AND DETERMINATION OF THE SPECIFIC SURFACE AREA OF SOLIDS (THEORY 6H). 5) CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF CATALYSTS. BULK AND SURFACE CHARACTERIZATION (THEORY 10H). 6) CATALYTIC REACTION KINETICS: LANGMUIR-HINSHELWOOD AND ELAY-RIDEAL MODELS.(6H THEORY) 7) INFLUENCE OF TRANSPORT PHENOMENA IN HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS (THEORY 3H). 8) STUDY OF THE MAIN CATALYTIC PROCESSES FOR THE ABATEMENT OF POLLUTANTS FROM GAS STREAMS COMING FROM FIXED AND MOBILE COMBUSTION PROCESSES (THEORY 6H). 9) LABORATORY EXPERIENCES: PREPARATION OF A SUPPORTED CATALYST, EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF SURFACE AREA, POROSITY AND POROSIMETRIC DISTRIBUTION. TESTING IN LABORATORY REACTORS FOR THE MEASUREMENTS OF CATALYTIC ACTIVITY, DETERMINING ITS CATALYTIC ACTIVITY AND OBTAINING PRELIMINARY KINETIC DATA (LABORATORY EXERCISES 12H). |
Teaching Methods | |

THE COURSE CONSISTS IN FRONT LESSONS (48H) AND ACTIVITIES IN LAB (12H) FOR A TOTAL AMOUNT OF 60 HOURS WHICH ARE WORTH 6 CREDITS. THE FRONT LESSONS WILL BE CARRIED OUT USING MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS. DURING THE LABORATORY ACTIVITIES THE STUDENTS WILL BE DIVIDED INTO GROUPS AND WILL USE THE TECHNIQUES EXPOSED IN THE FRONT LESSONS FOR THE PREPARATION AND CHARACTERISATION OF HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSTS. AFTER THE LABORATORY EXPERIENCES THE STUDENTS WILL PREPARE A FINAL REPORT. ATTENDANCE AT THE LECTURES IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. |

THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN ORAL EXAM WITH A GRADE OUT OF THIRTY. THE EXAM, AIMED AT ASCERTAINING THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TRAINING OBJECTIVES, LASTS APPROXIMATELY 45 MINUTES. THE EXAMINATION INVOLVES CHECKING THE REPORTS ON LABORATORY ACTIVITIES AND AN ORAL EXAMINATION IN WHICH IT WILL BE ASKED TO DISCUSS SOME OF THE MAIN HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSTS PREPARATION, CHARACTERIZATION AND APPLICATION ILLUSTRATED DURING THE COURSE. THE SCORE OF THE TEST DEPENDS ON THE DEGREE OF DEEPNESS OF THE TOPIC AND THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO EFFECTIVELY PRESENT THE CONTENTS AND CRITICALLY DISCUSS THE TOPICS ILLUSTRATED. EVALUATION CRITERION FOR THE MINIMUM THRESHOLD: THE STUDENT MUST DEMONSTRATE THAT HE UNDERSTANDS THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF THE HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS PHENOMENON FOR INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES. EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR EXCELLENCE: EXTREME COMPETENCE OF THE SUBJECT, EXCELLENT EXPRESSION SKILL AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE TECHNIQUES AND METHODOLOGIES ILLUSTRATED. |
