Objectives
GENERAL AIM:
THE COURSE AIMS TO DEEPEN AUTHORS, THEMES AND TRADITIONS OF THOUGHT ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE LATE ANTIQUITY

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT:
- WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TACKLE THE STUDY OF LATE ANCIENT THOUGHT AND TO REFINE HIS/HER SKILLS.
- WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO UNDERSTAND WHAT ARE THE FUNDAMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PHILOSOPHICAL SPECULATION IN THE LATE ANCIENT AGE.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- EXAMINE IN DETAIL THE FUNDAMENTAL THEMES OF A METAPHYSICAL, ONTOLOGICAL, ETHICAL AND THEOLOGICAL NATURE THAT EMERGE IN THE TRADITIONS OF THOUGHT THAT CAN BE TRACED BACK TO THE LATE ANCIENT AGE;
- DEAL IN A SYSTEMATIC WAY WITH THE STUDY OF AUTHORS AND CURRENTS OF THOUGHT OF THE LATE ANCIENT AGE
- DEEPEN SPECIFIC THEMES OF THE LATE ANCIENT TRADITION ALSO IN RELATION TO THE INFLUENCES IT EXERTS ON SUCCESSIVE PHASES, ERAS AND TRADITIONS OF THOUGHT.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- DEVELOP AUTONOMOUS REFLECTIONS THROUGH THE DIRECT DEALING WITH THE TEXTS.
- EXPAND HIS/HER CRITICAL AND ANALYTICAL SKILLS.
- IDENTIFY AND SELECT TEXTUAL SOURCES IN RELATION TO SPECIFIC RESEARCH AND INVESTIGATION THEMES.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
REPRESENT AND COMMUNICATE, BY MEANS OF TEXTS OR EVEN VIRTUAL TOOLS, THE RESULTS OF RESEARCH OR OWN ELABORATIONS.

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND COMPUTER ANALYSIS AND ARCHIVING RESOURCES;
- CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX TEXTS OF VARIOUS KINDS AND CHARACTERIZED BY A WIDE RANGE OF REFERENCES TO DIFFERENT CULTURAL AND / OR PHILOSOPHICAL TRADITIONS.
- SYSTEMATICALLY AND CONTINUOUSLY UPDATE HIS/HER KNOWLEDGE, USING THE TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC REFERENCE LITERATURE.

THE COURSE HAS AS ITS OBJECTIVE THE ANALYSIS AND COMMENTATION OF ENN. VI 8 [39], ONE OF THE MOST SPECULATIVELY DENSE TREATISES, IN WHICH PLOTINUS POSES A FUNDAMENTAL METAPHYSICAL QUESTION, THAT IS, WHETHER TO THE FIRST PRINCIPLE, TO WHAT IS ABSOLUTELY SIMPLE, WE CAN IN ANY WAY ATTRIBUTE THE NOTIONS OF WILL AND FREEDOM.
Teaching Methods
TEACHING INVOLVES 30 HOURS OF LECTURES, SUPPORTED BY COMMENTED READING OF ENN. VI 8 [39].
SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT STUDIES OF INTERNATIONAL RELEVANCE ON THE SUBJECT WILL ALSO BE EXAMINED.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL EXAMINATION TO VERIFY THE STUDENT'S PREPARATION AND SUITABILITY TO USE THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED. THE ABILITY TO EXPOSE THE ISSUES ADDRESSED IN THE COURSE IN AN ARTICULATED WAY, ALSO WITH TEXTUAL REFERENCES, WILL BE ASSESSED AS WELL.
THE FINAL GRADE IS AWARDED IN THIRTIETHS, WITH POSSIBLE LAUDE, IF THE CANDIDATE DEMONSTRATES SIGNIFICANT MASTERY OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENT AND THE ABILITY TO PRESENT THE ARGUMENTS WITH CONSIDERABLE LANGUAGE PROPERTY AND AUTONOMOUS ELABORATION SKILLS EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED BY THE PROFESSOR.
