Objectives | |

KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION: THE STUDENT MUST LEARN AND KNOW ACTIVELY, AND INTEGRATE TOGETHER, THE MORPHOLOGY, STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM, AND THE STRUCTURAL, GENETIC AND BIOCHEMICAL FEATURES OF MOST COMMON PATHOGENS. SPECIFIC ABILITIES WILL INCLUDE: 1. LEARN THE BASIC ELEMENTS AND MECHANISMS OF REGULATION OF THE IMMUNE RESPONSE. 2. UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN DIFFERENT BIOLOGICAL ENTITIES AND THEIR RELATIONSHIPS, AS WELL AS THE GENERAL MECHANISMS WHOSE ALTERATIONS CAN DISRUPT THE PHYSIOLOGICAL HOMEOSTASIS. 3. KNOW THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF LEUKOCYTES, THEIR DIFFERENTIATION FROM BLOOD STEM CELLS AND THEIR VARIATIONS WITH AGE, SEX, AND THERAPEUTIC MANEUVERS. 4. UNDERSTAND CELLULAR SPECIALIZATION, EFFECTOR RESPONSE, ANTIGEN PRESENTATION CLASSES, AND SYNERGIC OPERATION OF THE VARIOUS IMMUNE LAYERS DEVELOPED THROUGHOUT EVOLUTION. 5. KNOW THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONS OF THE MOLECULES INVOLVED IN IMMUNE RESPONSES, THE PROCESSES OF THEIR ACQUISITION DURING DEVELOPMENT AND DURING THE DIFFERENTIATION AND SELECTION OF LYMPHOCYTES AND ANTIGEN PRESENTING CELLS. 6. LEARN THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF THE BIOLOGY OF VARIOUS TYPES OF MICROORGANISMS (BACTERIA, VIRUSES, FUNGI, PROTOZOA). 7. UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF THE MICROORGANISMS/ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS, AND THE DIFFERENT PATHOGENIC MECHANISMS OF ACTION OF MICROORGANISMS. 8. INTERPRET COMMON DIAGNOSTIC AND LABORATORY TESTS OF IMMUNE SYSTEM AND PATHOGENIC COMPONENTS, INCLUDING CYTOMETRY AND CULTURAL PROTOCOLS. 9. ACQUIRE THE SPECIFIC LANGUAGE OF IMMUNOLOGY AND MICROBIOLOGY, AND USE IT APPROPRIATELY IN BOTH ITALIAN AND ENGLISH, USING DATABASES AND REPOSITORIES OF ARTICLES, GENES, PROTEINS, MUTANTS, SIGNALING PATHWAYS AND OTHER FUNCTIONAL GENOMICS DATA, COMMUNICATING THE RESULTS IN WRITTEN AND ORAL FORM WITH ABILITY TO SYNTHESIZE AND ASSOCIATE IDEAS. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION: THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED IN THIS COURSE ARE BASED ON CURRENT SCIENTIFIC-EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE (WHOSE ORIGINAL SOURCES ARE IN SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS IN ENGLISH), AND ARE ORIENTED TO TRANSLATION TO INDIVIDUALIZED MEDICINE, ESSENTIAL IN THE FORMATION OF MEDICAL GRADUATES IN THE 21ST CENTURY. HAVING COMPETENT SCIENTIFIC TRAINING IN IMMUNOLOGY AND MICROBIOLOGY IS ESSENTIAL FOR FURTHER UNDERSTANDING BOTH OF THE ETIOPATHOGENETIC MECHANISMS OF PREVALENT NOSOLOGICAL ENTITIES, AND TO ESTABLISH IN A RATIONAL WAY, DIAGNOSTIC JUDGMENTS, PROGNOSES, PROPHYLACTIC AND THERAPEUTIC STRATEGIES IN COMPLEX SYNDROMES, E.G. AUTOIMMUNITY, IMMUNODEFICIENCY, ALLERGIES AND OTHER HYPERSENSITIVITIES, REJECTION OF TRANSPLANTS, STERILE INFLAMMATION OR ASSOCIATED WITH INFECTION, CANCER, DEGENERATIVE DISEASES WITH PUTATIVE OR ESTABLISHED IMMUNE OR INFECTIOUS MECHANISMS SUCH AS ATHEROSCLEROSIS, DIABETES OR ALZHEIMER'S. THE TREATY OF BOLOGNA GIVES GREAT EMPHASIS TO SELF-TRAINING. THE RAPID EVOLUTION OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE IMMUNE SYSTEM, AND THE CONSTANT EMERGENCE OF NEW PATHOGENS, MAKES THIS TEACHING COURSE A PARADIGM FOR CONTINUED MEDICAL EDUCATION AND STRESSES THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING TO LEARN FROM SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE: THIS SCHEME ALLOWS TO SEEK FURTHER TRAINING IN R&D IN IMMUNOLOGY AND MICROBIOLOGY FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF EMERGING MEDICAL APPLICATIONS IN THIS AREA. THE GROWING USE OF MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR COMPONENTS OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM IN NEW DIAGNOSTIC, PROGNOSTIC, PROPHYLACTIC AND THERAPEUTIC STRATEGIES, INCLUDING THOSE OF REGENERATIVE MEDICINE, IS ITSELF SUFFICIENT TO ENDORSE THE APPLIED VALUE OF THIS STRATEGY. |

THE SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED BY EACH STUDENT WILL BE EVALUATED AT THE END OF THE COURSE IN MIXED/HYBRID EXAM SESSIONS, CONSISTING OF A WRITTEN TEST WITH FIFTEEN MULTIPLE-CHOICE IMMUNOLOGY QUESTIONS AND FIFTEEN MICROBIOLOGY QUESTIONS, FOLLOWED BY AN ORAL INTERVIEW FOR STUDENTS PASSING THE WRITTEN TEST. THE WRITTEN TEST IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE KNOWLEDGE OF MOST BASIC NOTIONS OF THE TWO SUBJECTS AND IS PASSED IF AT LEAST NINE CORRECT ANSWERS ARE GIVEN FOR EACH OF THE TWO MODULES OF THE COURSE. THE ORAL INTERVIEW IS AIMED AT VERIFYING IN-DEPTH COMPREHENSION OF THE TOPICS LEARNED. SPECIFICALLY, THE STUDENT WILL DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO CONNECT AND INTEGRATE THE CONCEPTS ACQUIRED FROM THE TWO TEACHING MODULES AND IDENTIFY RELEVANT INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT LAYERS OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM AND BETWEEN THESE AND INFECTIOUS AGENTS AND THE INTRINSIC OR EXTRINSIC FACTORS WHICH DETERMINE THEIR SUCCESS OR FAILURE. IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE PRINCIPLES OUTLINED AMONG THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE TESTED FOR HIS/HER PROSPECTIVE ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN A CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL SETTING.
