Objectives
UNIT I "GENERAL CHEMISTRY"
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL KNOW:
- ATOMIC STRUCTURE, CHEMICAL BONDS,
- CHEMICAL PROPERTIES, REACTIVITY OF ELEMENTS AND MOLECULES, GASES, SOLIDS, LIQUIDS AND SOLUTIONS;
- THE MECHANISMS OF THE MAIN CHEMICAL REACTIONS;
- WEIGHT RELATIONSHIPS IN REACTIONS.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- UNDERSTAND AND DESCRIBE THE COMPOSITION, STRUCTURE AND REACTIVITY OF MOLECULES;
- TRACE THE GEOMETRY AND NOMENCLATURE OF INORGANIC COMPOUNDS;
- BALANCE CHEMICAL REACTIONS FROM REACTANTS;
- PERFORM STOICHIOMETRIC CALCULATIONS USING THE CONCEPTS OF MOLE, CONCENTRATION, PH, SOLUBILITY;
- APPLY GENERAL PRINCIPLES GOVERNING THE EQUILIBRIUM OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS TO HOMOGENEOUS AND HETEROGENEOUS SYSTEMS.



UNIT II "ORGANIC CHEMISTRY"

THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE STRUCTURE AND NATURE OF CHEMICAL BONDS IN THE MAIN ORGANIC FUNCTIONAL GROUPS, THE FUNDAMENTAL IUPAC NOMENCLATURE RULES FOR ORGANIC COMPOUNDS, AND THE MECHANISMS OF THE MAIN CLASSES OF ORGANIC REACTIONS.
BY THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE THE PROPERTIES AND REACTIVITY OF THE MAIN CLASSES OF ORGANIC MOLECULES; CHARACTERIZE THE MAIN ORGANIC CONSTITUENTS OF THE SOIL AND MAJOR PLANT BIOMOLECULES; AND ANALYZE ISSUES RELATED TO ORGANIC POLLUTANTS.

•IDENTIFY AND REPRESENT DIFFERENT ISOMERIC FORMS, CHIRAL COMPOUNDS, AND CORRECTLY ASSIGN THE CONFIGURATION OF STEREOCENTERS
•ASSIGN THE IUPAC NOMENCLATURE TO ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
•PREDICT AND DESCRIBE PROPERTIES AND REACTIVITY OF THE MAIN CLASSES OF ORGANIC MOLECULES
•PREDICT AND DESCRIBE THE MECHANISMS OF THE MAIN CLASSES OF ORGANIC REACTIONS

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY HAVE ACQUIRED CRITICAL AND ARGUMENTATIVE SKILLS. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF REACTION MECHANISMS TO SOLVE GENERAL PROBLEMS IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. THEY WILL ALSO BECOME AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY IN THE PLANT WORLD, CONNECTING THE TOPICS COVERED WITH RELATED CHEMICAL DISCIPLINES.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO CLEARLY AND APPROPRIATELY EXPRESS CONCEPTS RELATED TO THE VARIOUS COURSE TOPICS IN COMMUNICATION WITH BOTH SPECIALIST AND NON-SPECIALIST AUDIENCES.

LEARNING SKILLS
AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY PURSUE MORE ADVANCED STUDIES, BASED ON THE FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED, AND CONTINUOUSLY UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE USING TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE ACQUIRED BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF CHEMISTRY AS PROVIDED BY STANDARD HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULA.

THE COURSE INCLUDES TWO MODULES: GENERAL CHEMISTRY AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY.
EACH MODULE COVERS 42 HOURS (6 CFU CREDITS).

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY MODULE (6 CFU)

TOPICS COVERED IN THE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY MODULE:
•SECTION 1 (1 CFU): CHEMICAL BONDS AND STRUCTURE OF ORGANIC MOLECULES; ACID-BASE REACTIONS; IUPAC NOMENCLATURE; ISOMERISM; STEREOCHEMISTRY.
•SECTION 2 (2 CFU): STRUCTURE, PROPERTIES, AND REACTIVITY OF MAIN ORGANIC COMPOUND CLASSES: ALKANES AND CYCLOALKANES, ALKENES, ALKYNES, ALKYL HALIDES, AROMATIC COMPOUNDS, ALCOHOLS.
•SECTION 3 (2 CFU): STRUCTURE, PROPERTIES, AND REACTIVITY OF: PHENOLS AND ETHERS, CARBONYL COMPOUNDS, CARBOXYLIC ACIDS AND FUNCTIONAL DERIVATIVES, AMINES, LIPIDS, PROTEINS, CARBOHYDRATES.
•SECTION 4 (1 CFU): EMPHASIS ON THE MAIN MECHANISMS OF ORGANIC REACTIONS.
Teaching Methods
THE GENERAL CHEMISTRY MODULE I CONSISTS OF LECTURES (35 HOURS), CLASSROOM EXERCISES (7 HOURS).
THE LECTURES WILL ENABLE THE STUDENT TO ACQUIRE THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL CHEMISTRY.
DURING THE EXERCISES, THE STUDENT IS PROPOSED TO SOLVE PROBLEMS RELATED TO STOICHIOMETRY. THE SOLVING METHOD CONSISTS OF UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM, PLANNING THE SOLUTION, AND FINALLY SOLVING IT. THE LATTER STAGE PROMOTES THE ABILITY TO EVALUATE THE REASONABLENESS OF THE ANSWER AND TO CHECK CONSISTENCY WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF CHEMISTRY.
THE ATTENDANCE WILL BE ELECTRONICALLY DETECTED AS PLANNED BY ATHENAEUM (EASYBADGE PLATFORM).



IN THE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY MODULE II, 35 HOURS (5 CFU) ARE DELIVERED THROUGH LECTURES AND 7 HOURS (1 CFU) THROUGH IN-CLASS EXERCISES. THE EXERCISES, CARRIED OUT ALONGSIDE LECTURES, ARE DESIGNED TO COMPLEMENT AND INTEGRATE THEM, HELPING STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND BOTH THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL ASPECTS.
DURING THE EXERCISES, STUDENTS DIRECTLY ENGAGE WITH THE CONCEPTS INTRODUCED IN CLASS.
THE TEACHING METHOD IS BASED ON LECTURES LASTING UP TO 120 MINUTES, SUPPORTED BY SLIDES AND SPECIFIC TEXTBOOKS FOR FURTHER STUDY. LECTURES ARE IN PERSON.
THE ATTENDANCE WILL BE ELECTRONICALLY DETECTED AS PLANNED BY ATHENAEUM (EASYBADGE PLATFORM).
Verification of learning
ACHIEVEMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVES IS ASSESSED THROUGH A FINAL EXAMINATION.


THE EXAMINATION TEST OF MODULE I. OF GENERAL CHEMISTRY CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST PREPARATORY TO AN ORAL INTERVIEW.
THE WRITTEN TEST OFFERS THE STUDENT STOICHIOMETRY EXERCISES ON: CALCULATIONS RELATED TO MASS AND CHARGE BALANCES IN REDOX REACTIONS; EVALUATION OF THE PH OF AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF AN ACID OR BASE;
EVALUATION OF THE MOLECULAR MASS OF NONVOLATILE SOLUTES IN DILUTE SOLUTIONS THROUGH THE USE OF COLLIGATIVE PROPERTIES.
THE ORAL TEST WILL BE DESIGNED TO FILL ANY GAPS FOUND IN THE WRITTEN TEST, AND TO TEST THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS GOVERNING CHEMICAL PROCESSES AND THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF MATTER.
THE MINIMUM GRADE FOR PASSING THE WRITTEN TEST AND ACCESS TO THE ORAL TEST IS 18/30.

THE ORAL TEST INCLUDES DISCUSSION OF APPLIED CASES TENDING TO VERIFY THE LEVEL REACHED BY THE STUDENT IN THE ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE.
THE FINAL GRADE, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS WITH POSSIBLE HONORS, WILL DEPEND ON THE OVERALL MATURITY ACQUIRED ON THE COURSE CONTENT.
IT WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT:
- THE QUALITY OF THE EXPOSITION, IN TERMS OF THE USE OF APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE
- THE ABILITY TO CROSS-CURRICULARLY CORRELATE THE DIFFERENT TOPICS OF THE COURSE AND, WHERE POSSIBLE, WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES
- OF THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT DEMONSTRATED.

THE MINIMUM GRADE FOR PASSING THE OVERALL EXAMINATION IS 18/30. HONORS MAY BE AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO ACHIEVE THE MAXIMUM GRADE OF 30/30 AND DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO INDEPENDENTLY APPLY ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN CLASS.
THE FINAL GRADE WILL RESULT FROM THE OVERALL EVALUATION OF BOTH TESTS, GIVING GREATER WEIGHT TO THE ORAL INTERVIEW.


FOR THE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY MODULE, THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL INTERVIEW COVERING COURSE TOPICS.
THE WRITTEN TEST INCLUDES EXERCISES ON NOMENCLATURE, STEREOCHEMISTRY, MAIN ORGANIC REACTIONS, DETAILED REACTION MECHANISMS, AND GENERAL THEORY TOPICS. IT LASTS 2 HOURS AND IS PASSED WITH A MINIMUM SCORE OF 18/30.

THE FOLLOWING ORAL TEST WILL HAVE THE LENGTH OF APPROXIMATELY 20/30 MINUTES AND WILL ALSO CONSIST OF QUESTIONS RELATING TO THE TOPICS RELATED TO THE WRONG ANSWERS OF THE WRITTEN TEST.

THE FINAL GRADE WILL BE BASED ON THE OVERALL EVALUATION OF BOTH THE WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMS. A SCORE OF AT LEAST 18/30 IS REQUIRED TO PASS.
