Objectives
ACQUISITION OF THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE OF HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY AND ABILITY TO CORRELATE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF THE MAIN ANATOMICAL DISTRICTS.
ACQUISITION OF THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE OF THE STRUCTURE AND ULTRASTRUCTURE OF THE CELL AND THE MAIN TISSUES, ORGANS AND APPARATUSES.
Prerequisites
ACQUISITION OF THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF BIOLOGY PROVIDED BY NORMAL HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULA IS RECOMMENDED.

THE COURSE CONSISTS OF A SINGLE COURSE INCLUDING THE HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY PART, 48 HOURS (6 CFU) AND THE ELEMENTS OF ANATOMY PART, 24 HOURS (3 CFU), FOR A TOTAL OF 72 HOURS (9 CFU).

HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY
• INTRODUCTION TO PHYSIOLOGY: LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION, HOMEOSTASIS AND REGULATION SYSTEMS, POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE FEEDBACK (2 HOURS)
• CELLULAR PHYSIOLOGY: MEDIATED AND NON-MEDIATED MEMBRANE TRANSPORT; ACTION POTENTIAL; VOLTAGE GATED ION CHANNELS; ION CHANNEL COUPLED RECEPTORS; G PROTEIN-COUPLED METABOTROPIC RECEPTORS; RECEPTORS WITH TYROSINE KINASE ACTIVITY. MEMBRANE POTENTIAL; GRADUATED POTENTIAL (8 HOURS)
• NEUROPHYSIOLOGY: CHEMICAL SYNAPSES AND ELECTRICAL SYNAPSES; NERVOUS COMMUNICATION; SIGNAL TRANSDUCTION (2 HOURS)
• CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM: CEREBRAL CORTEX, BASAL NUCLEI, THALAMUS AND HYPOTHALAMUS, CEREBELLUM, BRAIN STEM, SPINAL CORD; CRANIAL AND SPINAL NERVES (4 HOURS)
• PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM: AFFERENT DIVISION AND SPECIAL SENSES (SIGHT, HEARING, TASTE AND SMELL); EFFERENT DIVISION (AUTONOMIC AND SOMATIC NERVOUS SYSTEM) (4 HOURS)
• MUSCLE PHYSIOLOGY: DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SKELETAL, SMOOTH AND CARDIAC MUSCLE; NEURO-MUSCULAR JUNCTION; MOLECULAR BASIS OF SKELETAL MUSCLE CONTRACTION; MECHANICS AND METABOLISM OF SKELETAL MUSCLE; REFLEXES (4 HOURS)
• CARDIAC PHYSIOLOGY: ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY OF THE HEART; MECHANICAL EVENTS OF THE CARDIAC CYCLE; CARDIAC OUTPUT (2 HOURS)
• BLOOD PRESSURE REGULATION (2 HOURS)
• BLOOD: PLASMA, HEMATOPOIESIS, RED BLOOD CELLS AND BLOOD GROUPS, PLATELETS AND HEMOSTASIS, WHITE BLOOD CELLS; INNATE AND ADAPTIVE IMMUNITY (4 HOURS)
• RESPIRATORY SYSTEM: RESPIRATORY MECHANICS, GAS EXCHANGE AND TRANSPORT, BREATHING REGULATION (2 HOURS)
• URINARY SYSTEM: GLOMERULAR FILTRATION, TUBULAR REABSORPTION AND SECRETION, EXCRETION AND CLEARANCE; URINATION REFLEX (2 HOURS)
• DIGESTIVE SYSTEM: REGULATION OF GASTRIC AND INTESTINAL ACTIVITY; DIGESTION AND ABSORPTION OF NUTRIENTS; PANCREATIC AND LIVER FUNCTION (4 HOURS)
• ENDOCRINE SYSTEM: PITUITARY, THYROID AND PARATHYROID, ADRENAL AND PANCREATIC HORMONES; ENDOCRINE FUNCTION OF KIDNEY, HEART, THYMUS AND GONADS (4 HOURS).
• REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM: REPRODUCTIVE FUNCTION AND SPERMATOGENESIS; REFLEX OF ERECTION; EJACULATORY REFLEX. OOGENESIS; OVARIAN CYCLE AND UTERINE CYCLE; FERTILIZATION, CHILDBIRTH AND BREASTFEEDING (4 HOURS).

• ANATOMICAL NOMENCLATURE. EPITHELIAL, CONNECTIVE, MUSCULAR AND NERVOUS TISSUES (2 HOURS)
• INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM: SKIN AND SKIN APPENDAGES (1 HOUR)
• LOCOMOTOR SYSTEM: GENERAL ORGANIZATION; CLASSIFICATION OF BONES, JOINTS AND MUSCLES (4 HOURS)
• CIRCULATORY SYSTEM: HEART AND VESSELS (2 HOURS)
• LYMPHATIC CIRCULATORY SYSTEM: LYMPHATIC VESSELS, PRIMARY AND SECONDARY LYMPHOID ORGANS (1 HOUR)
• RESPIRATORY SYSTEM: NASAL CAVITIES, RHINO-PHARYNX, LARYNX, TRACHEA, BRONCHI, LUNGS (2 HOURS)
• DIGESTIVE SYSTEM: BUCCAL CAVITY, PHARYNX, ESOPHAGUS, STOMACH, SMALL INTESTINE AND LARGE INTESTINE, SALIVARY GLANDS, LIVER, PANCREAS (4 HOURS)
• ENDOCRINE SYSTEM: GENERAL INFORMATION; PITUITARY, THYROID, PARATHYROID, ADRENAL, PANCREATIC ISLETS OF LANGERHANS, GONADS (1 HOURS)
• UROPOIETIC SYSTEM: KIDNEYS, URETERS, BLADDER, URETHRA (2 HOURS)
• FEMALE AND MALE GENITAL SYSTEM: GONADS AND GENITAL TRACT (2 HOURS)
• CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM: SPINAL CORD AND BRAIN (1 HOUR)
• PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM: SPINAL NERVES AND BRAIN NERVES. AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM: SYMPATHETIC AND PARASYMPATHETIC. TYPES OF SENSITIVITY. SENSORY ORGANS. MAIN SENSORY AND MOTOR PATHWAYS (2 HOURS).

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES INTERACTIVE FRONTAL LESSONS WITH COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE OF AT LEAST 75% OF THE TOTAL LESSONS. ATTENDANCE WILL BE ASCERTAINED THROUGH THE EASYBADGE AUTOMATIC DETECTION SYSTEM.

Verification of learning
ATTAINMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN ORAL EXAMINATION ON THE HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY PART AND THE ELEMENTS OF ANATOMY PART, TO BE HELD AT THE SAME TIME, WITH A GRADE IN THIRTIETHS, CONSISTING OF AN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THE TOPICS OF THE PROGRAMME, AIMED AT VERIFYING UNDERSTANDING OF HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS, AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO EXPOUND CONCEPTS USING APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE. THE FINAL GRADE WILL BE DERIVED FROM THE AVERAGE OF THE GRADES OF THE TWO PARTS.
DURING THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE 3 IN ITINERE TESTS (NOT COMPULSORY) LASTING 1 HOUR EACH, COMPRISING MULTIPLE-CHOICE AND OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS, THE DATES OF WHICH WILL BE AGREED WITH THE STUDENT. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE THREE IN-PROGRESS TESTS (WITH A MINIMUM MARK FOR EACH TEST OF 18/30) EXEMPTS THE STUDENT FROM THE ORAL TEST. THE EXEMPTION IS VALID ONLY FOR THE SESSION FOLLOWING THE TEACHING SESSION.
