GENERAL OBJECTIVE THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES ARE CONSISTENT WITH THOSE OF THE MASTER'S DEGREE PROGRAM, WHICH AIMS TO TRAIN EXPERT PROFESSIONALS IN THE FIELD OF MONITORING, EVALUATION, AND MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC RISKS. THIS INVOLVES ACQUIRING SKILLS IN METHODS FOR ANALYZING AND MONITORING ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS AND DEVELOPING A SOLID INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND ON VARIOUS TYPES OF NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC RISKS. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND, WITH THE SUPPORT OF ADVANCED TEXTBOOKS AND SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS, CUTTING-EDGE TOPICS IN THE FIELD OF METHODS FOR ANALYZING AND MONITORING ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS OF BOTH NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC ORIGIN. IN DETAIL, THE STUDENT WILL GAIN KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF: THE CONCEPT OF ENVIRONMENTAL RISK (BOTH NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC), ITS MANAGEMENT, AND MITIGATION. SEISMIC AND VOLCANIC RISK, AS WELL AS THE METHODS FOR THEIR MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT. THE IMPACTS CAUSED BY CLIMATE CHANGE. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE COURSE AIMS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO CONCEIVE AND SUPPORT ARGUMENTS RELATED TO THE ISSUES OF: RISK COMMUNICATION. METHODS OF ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING IN THE CONTEXT OF SEISMIC, VOLCANIC, AND CLIMATE RISKS. THE ABILITY TO ANALYZE DATA FROM GEOPHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING NETWORKS. IN DETAIL, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS IN INNOVATIVE FIELDS, WITHIN TRANSDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTS (E.G., ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION, COMMUNITY RESILIENCE TO NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC RISKS) MAKING JUDGEMENTS THE COURSE WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO COLLECT AND INTERPRET DATA RELATED TO: SEISMIC AND VOLCANIC MONITORING. METEOROLOGICAL PARAMETERS IN RELATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE. IN DETAIL, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY INTEGRATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE TO BEST MANAGE THE COMPLEXITY OF ISSUES RELATED TO GEOPHYSICAL MONITORING METHODOLOGIES OF THE ENVIRONMENT, IDENTIFYING THE MOST SUITABLE CASE-BY-CASE METHODS. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: COLLECT AND INTERPRET DATA RELATED TO SEISMIC AND VOLCANIC MONITORING AND CLIMATE CHANGE. INDEPENDENTLY INTEGRATE KNOWLEDGE TO MANAGE COMPLEX PROBLEMS, IDENTIFYING THE MOST SUITABLE RISK ANALYSIS AND MONITORING METHODS ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS. EVALUATE THE MOST APPROPRIATE SOURCES AND METHODS FOR RISK COMMUNICATION. COMMUNICATION SKILLS THE COURSE WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO COMMUNICATE, TO BOTH SPECIALISTS AND NON-SPECIALISTS, CONCEPTS AND CONCLUSIONS DERIVED FROM THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED REGARDING THE APPLICATION OF METHODS FOR ANALYZING AND MONITORING NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC RISKS, CONTRIBUTING TO RISK ASSESSMENT AND SAFETY INTERVENTIONS. LEARNING SKILLS THE COURSE WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE SKILLS NECESSARY FOR SELF-MANAGED AND AUTONOMOUS STUDY, ENABLING THEM TO FIND INDIVIDUAL PATHWAYS TO ADDRESS THE COMPLEX AND MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROBLEMS OF ANALYZING NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC RISKS TO INCREASE COMMUNITY RESILIENCE |

TEACHING INVOLVES LECTURES AND EXAMPLE PRESENTATIONS LASTING A TOTAL OF 40 HOURS (5 CFU) AND STUDENT EXERCISES TOTALING 12 HOURS (1 CFU). |

THE LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE TEACHING IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAMINATION GRADED IN THIRTIETHS WITH POSSIBLE HONORS. THE GRADE WILL DEPEND ON HOW WELL THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES THAT HE/SHE HAS LEARNED AND UNDERSTOOD THE THEORETICAL AND APPLIED CONTENT OF THE TEACHING. THE MINIMUM GRADE FOR PASSING THE EXAM IS 18/30, AND IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOOLS FOR DETERMINING SEISMIC HAZARD AT A SITE, LOCAL SEISMIC AMPLIFICATION, AND STABILITY OF A SLOPE. THE MAXIMUM GRADE (30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE AND THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOOLS FOR DETERMINING SEISMIC HAZARD AT A SITE AND LOCAL SEISMIC AMPLIFICATION. HONORS MAY BE AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO ACHIEVE THE MAXIMUM GRADE OF 30/30, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE QUALITY OF THE EXPOSITION, IN TERMS OF THE USE OF APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE, AND THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT DEMONSTRATED TO ASSESS THE APPLICABILITY OF THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED TO VARIOUS PROBLEMS IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD. THE EXAMINATION WILL INVOLVE AN ORAL TEST OF ABOUT 30 MINUTES INCLUDING AT LEAST THREE QUESTIONS RELATED TO THE CONTENT OF THE LECTURES GIVEN AND THE DISCUSSION OF AT LEAST ONE OF THE PAPERS PRODUCED BY THE STUDENT BEFORE THE TEST, ON TOPICS ASSIGNED DURING THE TEACHING AND RELATED TO THE APPLICATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED. THE FINAL GRADE WILL BE DETERMINED BASED ON THE EVALUATION OF THE QUALITY AND COMPLETENESS OF THE ORAL EXPOSITION (FOR 2/3) AND THE EVALUATION OF THE SUBMITTED PAPER (FOR THE REMAINING 1/3). |
