Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO MAKE KNOWN THE MAJOR MOMENTS OF CONTEMPORARY HISTORY, AND ITS GEOGRAPHICAL, CULTURAL, STRUCTURAL AND LONG-TERM CONTEXTS OF REFERENCE.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL:
- KNOW ABOUT THE MAJOR MOMENTS OF CONTEMPORARY HISTORY AND ITS GEOGRAPHICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXTS OF REFERENCE, AND UNDERSTAND THE ROLE OF CONTEMPORARY EUROPEAN CIVILIZATION IN THE GENERAL FRAMEWORK OF GLOBAL CIVILIZATION, TO ORIENT THEMSELVES IN HISTORY AS WELL AS DIFFERENTIATING HISTORY AND HISTORIOGRAPHY;
- ACQUIRE THE MAIN TOPICS OF CONTEMPORARY HISTORY AND THE RHYTHMS OF A WORLD IN RAPID AND CONTINUOUS SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND ECONOMICAL EVOLUTION;
- UNDERSTAND THE CONSTANT INTERLACEMENT BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL, INSTITUTIONAL AND CULTURAL HISTORY, AS WELL AS THE MOST NOVELTY ELEMENTS THAT CHARACTERIZE THE DIFFERENT PHASES OF GLOBAL HISTORY, INCLUDING THE AWARENESS OF THE RELATIONSHIPS THAT, OVER TIME AND IN SPACE, INTERVIEW BETWEEN MAN AND THE ENVIRONMENT, WITH MODERN STATES AND INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS COMMITTED IN THE GOVERNMENT OF VERY VAST TERRITORIES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- KNOW HOW TO ELABORATE ORIGINAL APPROACHES AND INTUITIONS CONCERNING THE HISTORICAL CHARACTERS, WHICH HAVE DESIGNED THE PHYSIOGNOMY OF THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD;
- EXPERTLY EXAMINE THE RICH REPERTORY OF SOURCES AND MATERIALS, WHICH ARE THE BASIS OF HISTORICAL STUDIES RELATING TO THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD;
- RESOLVE AND TRANSLATE WITH CRITICAL AWARENESS THE EVALUATION OF THE TOPICS ADDRESSED IN THE GREAT FRAMEWORKS OF THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD;
- KNOW HOT TO READ AND UNDERSTAND PHYSICAL, POLITICAL AND HISTORICAL CARDS REGARDING THE VARIOUS PHASES OF CONTEMPORARY HISTORY AND TO LOCATE THE MAIN EVENTS THAT HAPPENED IN EACH TERRITORY.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- SELECT THE PROBLEMS CONNECTED TO THE NEED TO "UPDATE" THE HISTORICAL STUDY, OR TO FIND THE TRACES OF THE SOCIO-CULTURAL DYNAMICS OF OUR MOST STRINGING CONTEMPORANEITY IN THE TRADITION OF THE PAST ;
- IDENTIFY THE MAIN HISTORIOGRAPHICAL ISSUES IN THE FIELD OF THE MOST GENERAL HORIZON OF RELATIONS AND INTERLACES BETWEEN HISTORICAL EVENTS AND PROCESSES OF THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD;
- DISCOVER NEW KEYS TO READING AND INTERPRETING THE IDEA OF MODERN IDENTITY, ASKING QUESTIONS TO THE PAST THROUGH THE EXAMINATION OF UNEXPLORED RELATIONS BETWEEN EPISODES AND PHENOMENA, WHICH ARE PLACED WELL BEYOND THE LOCAL OR REGIONAL HISTORICAL SCALE.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- SUPPORT CONVERSATIONS ON MULTIPLE THEMES SHOWING A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORIOGRAPHICAL GUIDELINES RELATING TO CONTEMPORARY HISTORY;
- PRESENT AND DISCUSS HISTORIOGRAPHICAL ISSUES WITH THEIR OWN PROCESSING, THROUGH TEXTS, CARDS OR VIRTUAL INSTRUMENTS.

LEARNING SKILLS
STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- USE THE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS AND THE COMPUTER RESOURCES FOR ANALYSIS AND DATA ARCHIVING;
- CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX SCIENTIFIC OR LITERARY TEXTS;
- PROCEED WITH THE CONTINUOUS UPDATING OF HIS KNOWLEDGE, USING THE RELEVANT TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.
Prerequisites
GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF ORAL AND WRITTEN ITALIAN; BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY

THE COURSE AIMS TO EXAMINE EVENTS AND PROCESSES IN 20TH CENTURY HISTORY FROM THE SPECIFIC PERSPECTIVE OF POLITICAL-INSTITUTIONAL HISTORY AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS. THE FIRST PART IS DEDICATED TO THE GREAT WAR (1914-1918) AS THE START OF THE PROCESS OF THE STATEHOOD OF EUROPEAN SOCIETIES AND THUS AS THE BEGINNING OF THE 'ERA OF TYRANNIES'. A SECOND PART WILL BE DEDICATED TO THE COLD WAR THAT SUCCEEDED THE SECOND WORLD WAR (1939-1945). IT WILL BE ANALYSED ABOVE ALL FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE DIVISION OF EUROPE INTO TWO BLOCS UNTIL THE COLLAPSE OF THE BERLIN WALL IN 1989 AND IN ITS GLOBAL INTERTWINING WITH THE PHENOMENON OF DECOLONISATION
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES SEVERAL MOMENTS OF REFLECTION AND DEBATE WITH THE STUDENTS AT THE END OF EACH TEACHING BLOCK. SPACE WILL BE GIVEN, IN KEEPING WITH THE PREPARATORY NATURE OF THE COURSE, TO THE PROBLEM OF SOURCES AND THEIR METHODOLOGY

THE EXAM INCLUDES A FINAL ORAL TEST ON THE TOPICS COVERED AND SET OUT IN THE SYLLABUS
