Objectives
THIS COURSE IS AN INTRODUCTION TO MICROECONOMIC THEORY.

THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE THE FUNDAMENTAL METHODOLOGICAL AND THEORETICAL TOOLS OF MICROECONOMICS, RELATING TO INDIVIDUAL DECISIONS OF HOUSEHOLDS AND BUSINESSES AND TO THE FUNCTIONING OF THE MARKET, UNDERSTOOD AS A MECHANISM FOR COORDINATING CHOICES.

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO USE BASIC MICROECONOMIC MODELS TO EXPLAIN CASES AND ECONOMIC PHENOMENA RELATED TO HOUSEHOLDS AND BUSINESSES IN DIFFERENT, COMPETITIVE AND NON-COMPETITIVE CONTEXTS, BOTH IN THE SHORT AND LONG TERM. IN ADDITION, THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY AND UNDERSTAND EXAMPLES AND DETERMINANTS OF MARKET FAILURES.
Prerequisites
A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF MATHEMATICS, ALTHOUGH NOT MANDATORY, IS RECOMMENDED FOR A MORE EFFECTIVE UNDERSTANDING OF THE COURSE CONTENT.

THE COURSE ANALYZES THE BEHAVIOR OF CONSUMERS AND PRODUCERS, AND THE MAIN MARKET STRUCTURES, DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN PRICE-TAKER AND PRICE-MAKER FIRMS.

DETAILED SYLLABUS, WITH INDICATION OF LECTURE/EXERCISE HOURS:

1) INTRODUCTION TO ECONOMIC ANALYSIS (LECTURES: 2 HOURS)

2) DEMAND AND SUPPLY (LECTURES: 7 HOURS; EXERCISES: 2 HOURS)

3) CONSUMER THEORY (LECTURES: 9 HOURS; EXERCISES: 3 HOURS)

4) PRODUCTION AND COST THEORY (LECTURES: 10 HOURS; EXERCISES: 2 HOURS)

5) PERFECT COMPETITION (LECTURES: 5 HOURS; EXERCISES: 2 HOURS)

6) MONOPOLISTIC MARKETS (LECTURES: 5 HOURS; EXERCISES: 1 HOUR)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES 48 TEACHING HOURS, CONSISTING OF 38 HOURS OF LECTURES AND 10 HOURS OF PRACTICAL EXERCISES.
LECTURES WILL HELP STUDENTS ACQUIRE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN TOPICS IN MICROECONOMICS, FOSTERING THE ABILITY TO ANALYSE THE BEHAVIOUR OF CONSUMERS AND PRODUCERS, AS WELL AS THE VARIOUS MARKET STRUCTURES. THE PRACTICAL EXERCISES WILL SUPPORT LEARNING THROUGH THE GUIDED SOLUTION OF NUMERICAL AND GRAPHICAL EXERCISES, HELPING STUDENTS CONSOLIDATE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF MICROECONOMIC ANALYSIS METHODS AND TECHNIQUES.
ATTENDANCE AT LECTURES AND EXERCISES IS NOT MANDATORY BUT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM WITH EVALUATION IN THIRTIETHS. THE EXAM INCLUDES A WRITTEN AND AN ORAL TEST THAT MAY TAKE PLACE ON DIFFERENT DAYS (THE WRITTEN TEST IS PROPEDEUTIC TO THE ORAL TEST). EACH TEST IS ASSESSED IN THIRTIETHS AND IS INTENDED TO BE PASSED WITH A MINIMUM MARK OF 18/30. THE FINAL GRADE IS GIVEN BY THE AVERAGE OF THE GRADES REPORTED IN EACH TEST.

THE WRITTEN TEST IS COMPOSED OF TRUE/FALSE AND FILL-IN-THE-BLANK QUESTIONS (FIRST PART), MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS (SECOND PART), EXERCISES (THIRD PART). THIS TEST WILL BE CARRIED OUT AT THE END OF THE COURSE.

THE WRITTEN TEST IS AIMED AT EVALUATING, IN A TRANSPARENT AND OBJECTIVE WAY, THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILL ACHIEVED BY THE STUDENT ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENT INDICATED IN THE PROGRAM, AS WELL AS THE MASTERY TO APPLY THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE.

IN THE FIRST PART, THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES THEIR KNOWLEDGE BY INDICATING WHETHER EACH STATEMENT IS TRUE OR FALSE AND COMPLETING PARTIAL DEFINITIONS BY FILLING IN THE APPROPRIATE TERMS.
THE SECOND PART INCLUDES MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS. THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES THEIR KNOWLEDGE BY MARKING AND SUPPLEMENTING THE CHOSEN ANSWER WITH A BRIEF COMMENT AND A GRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION. THIS APPROACH ALLOWS FOR INDEPENDENTLY FORMULATED RESPONSES WHILE ENSURING THEY ARE COMPARABLE THROUGH PREDETERMINED GRADING CRITERIA.
THE THIRD PART CONSISTS OF SOLVING EXERCISES.

STUDENTS ARE AWARE OF THE MAXIMUM SCORE CORRESPONDING TO EACH QUESTION/EXERCISE. QUESTIONS AND EXERCISES ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE SOLVED DURING LESSONS/PRACTICE EXERCISES HOURS.
DURING THE WRITTEN TEST, IT IS NOT ALLOWED TO CONSULT BOOKS/NOTES, TO USE COMPUTERS AND MOBILE PHONES; ONLY THE USE OF A CALCULATOR IS ALLOWED.

THE ORAL TEST CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW, WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS INDICATED IN THE PROGRAM. THIS EXAM ASSESSES THE STUDENT'S KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING LEVEL, ANALYTICAL AND JUDGMENT SKILLS, AND ABILITY TO PRESENT TOPICS USING APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY. THIS TEST WILL BE CARRIED OUT AT THE END OF THE COURSE.
