Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO MAKE STUDENTS AWARE THAT THE IDENTITIES OF MEN AND WOMEN ARE COMPLEX SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND POLITICAL CONSTRUCTIONS, AND THAT THESE CONSTRUCTIONS VARY ACCORDING TO HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL CONTEXTS.

THE STUDENT WILL:

ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF THE VARIETY OF SOURCES AVAILABLE FOR THE STUDY OF DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF WOMEN'S HISTORY AND GENDER IDENTITY;

DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND, OVER THE LONG TERM, CONTINUITIES AND CHANGES IN GENDER RELATIONS AND IN THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE SEXES, MOVING BEYOND THE CONCEPT OF A 'BINARY GENDER.'

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:

GATHER, ORGANIZE, PROCESS, AND INTERPRET HISTORICAL-ANTHROPOLOGICAL DATA;

ANALYZE HISTORICAL SITUATIONS TO PLACE LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY PHENOMENA IN CONTEXT;

UNDERSTAND ISSUES OF INTEGRATION, EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES, AND SOCIAL INCLUSION AS FUNDAMENTAL VALUES FOR THE FUTURE OF SOCIETY;

RECONSTRUCT THE RELEVANT CULTURAL CONTEXTS IN WHICH TO PLACE AND CONSIDER LINGUISTIC, LITERARY, AND HISTORICAL PHENOMENA, INCLUDING THEIR TEMPORAL EVOLUTION.

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:

USE HISTORICAL AND GENDER PERSPECTIVES AS PART OF THEIR ABILITY TO ANALYZE COMPLEX SITUATIONS IN ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL CONTEXTS;

DEVELOP CRITICAL THINKING AND INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT THROUGH HISTORIOGRAPHIC AND INTERDISCIPLINARY COMPARISON.

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:

COMMUNICATE INFORMATION, IDEAS, PROBLEMS, AND SOLUTIONS WITHIN THE SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY FIELD TO NON-SPECIALIST AUDIENCES WITH APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE AND CLEAR THOUGHT STRUCTURE.

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:

FURTHER ENHANCE THE ACQUIRED SKILLS AND APPLY THEM TO OTHER SUBJECTS WITHIN THE STUDY PROGRAM.
Prerequisites
TO MAKE THE MOST OF THIS COURSE, IT IS ADVISABLE TO HAVE A STRONG INTEREST IN CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND THE VARIOUS EXPRESSIONS OF GENDER IDENTITIES ACROSS DIFFERENT SOCIETIES. ADDITIONALLY, FAMILIARITY WITH THE USE OF THE INTERNET AND ITS MAIN SERVICES IS BENEFICIAL, AS IT ENABLES ACCESS TO AND ANALYSIS OF DIVERSE SOURCES. FINALLY, A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF CONTEMPORARY HISTORY SERVES AS A VALUABLE TOOL FOR UNDERSTANDING THE HISTORICAL PROCESSES THAT HAVE SHAPED GENDER DYNAMICS AND SOCIAL TRANSFORMATIONS OVER TIME.

THE COURSE, DEDICATED TO WOMEN'S HISTORY AND GENDER STUDIES, AIMS TO EXPLORE HOW MALE AND FEMALE IDENTITIES HAVE DEVELOPED AS SOCIAL CONSTRUCTS. THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF SPECIFIC SOURCES AND RESEARCH, IT WILL DELVE INTO THE CONCEPT OF GENDER, ITS SIGNIFICANCE, AND THE DYNAMICS OF RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE SEXES.

STUDENTS WILL BE GUIDED THROUGH AN INTERDISCIPLINARY JOURNEY THAT WEAVES TOGETHER HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY, VISUAL STUDIES, ANTHROPOLOGY, AND SOCIOLOGY. A KEY FOCUS OF THE COURSE WILL BE THE STUDY OF REPRESENTATIONS OF THE HUMAN BODY, WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE FEMALE BODY—HOW IT HAS BEEN PERCEIVED, IMAGINED, AND DEPICTED OVER THE PAST THREE CENTURIES. THIS APPROACH WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE BODY NOT ONLY AS A BIOLOGICAL REALITY BUT ALSO AS A CRUCIAL ELEMENT FOR ANALYZING THE SOCIAL, POLITICAL, AND ECONOMIC HISTORY OF THE MODERN ERA.

AMONG THE MAIN TOPICS COVERED, THE COURSE WILL EXAMINE THE CONCEPT OF CULTURE AND MENTALITY, THE BODY IN RELATION TO HISTORY AND PSYCHOANALYSIS, AND ITS ROLE IN LEGAL AND NORMATIVE DISCOURSES. ADDITIONALLY, IT WILL EXPLORE REPRESENTATIONS OF MASCULINITY AND FEMININITY IN ADVERTISING LANGUAGE, THE BODY IN LGBTQ STUDIES, AND NOTIONS SUCH AS HONOR, VIRGINITY, AND VIRILITY. THIS COURSE WILL PROVIDE A BROAD AND IN-DEPTH PERSPECTIVE ON HOW GENDER, THE BODY, AND SOCIETY HAVE BEEN INTERTWINED OVER TIME, FOSTERING CRITICAL REFLECTION ON BOTH HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY DYNAMICS.
Teaching Methods
THE LESSONS WILL BE PRIMARILY LECTURE-BASED BUT WILL ALSO PROVIDE AMPLE SPACE FOR ACTIVE STUDENT PARTICIPATION. STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE THROUGH QUESTIONS, OBSERVATIONS, AND REFLECTIONS. ADDITIONALLY, THE COURSE WILL FEATURE GUEST LECTURERS FROM OTHER UNIVERSITIES AND EXPERTS, BOTH ITALIAN AND INTERNATIONAL, WHO WILL OFFER IN-DEPTH INSIGHTS INTO TOPICS RELATED TO GENDER STUDIES.
Verification of learning
THE FINAL EXAM WILL BE CONDUCTED ORALLY. FOREIGN STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE IT IN FRENCH, ENGLISH, OR SPANISH. FOR STUDENTS WHO SPEAK OTHER LANGUAGES, THE EXAM CAN BE TAKEN IN ITALIAN OR ENGLISH.

FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS: THE EXAM WILL COVER THE COURSE CONTENT AND ONE TEXT OF THEIR CHOICE (AMONG THOSE INDICATED BY THE PROFESSOR DURING THE LESSONS).

STUDENTS WILL BE CONSIDERED ATTENDING IF THEY HAVE NOT EXCEEDED 30% ABSENCES.
STUDENTS WHO ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND ARE REQUESTED TO CONTACT THE PROFESSOR.
