Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVES: THE COURSE AIMS TO HAVE STUDENTS OBTAIN LINGUISTIC AND COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE IN ENGLISH AT THE B2/C1 LEVEL ACCORDING TO THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE. IT FURTHER AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE NECESSARY TOOLS TO EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE IN ENGLISH WITHIN ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL CONTEXTS, AS WELL AS TO UNDERSTAND AND USE SPECIALIZED LANGUAGE RELATED TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCES CONFIDENTLY.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND CRITICALLY ANALYZE ENGLISH TEXTS RELATED TO ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS, POLITICAL DISCOURSES, AND OTHER THEMES AND TOPICS PERTINENT TO STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL FIELDS.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY ELEMENTS AND STRATEGIES OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS TO THE ANALYSIS AND PRODUCTION OF TEXTS IN ACADEMIC AND SPECIALIZED ENGLISH; DEMONSTRATE A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF THE PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL, SYNTACTIC, AND SEMANTIC FEATURES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE; CORRECTLY APPLY LINGUISTIC, COMMUNICATIVE, AND CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE OF WRITTEN AND ORAL ENGLISH.
MAKING JUDGEMENTS: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO SELECT, USE, AND CRITICALLY ANALYZE RELIABLE ENGLISH-LANGUAGE SOURCES, AS WELL AS ASSESS THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF THEIR OWN WRITTEN AND ORAL PRODUCTION IN ENGLISH.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AT THE B2/C1 LEVEL EFFECTIVELY, FLEXIBLY, AND WITH AWARENESS.
LEARNING SKILLS: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO DEVELOP THEIR LANGUAGE SKILLS, EVEN THROUGH SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING.

- THE SPREAD OF ENGLISH (4H)
- ENGLISHES AND ENGLISH AS A LINGUA FRANCA (6H)
- LANGUAGE ATTITUDES AND INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION (4H)
- ACADEMIC ENGLISH (6H)
- PERSUASIVE MESSAGING AND ARGUMENTATION (6H)
- DISCOURSE ANALYSIS (6H)
- ENGLISH FOR PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES (8H)

INSIGHTS INTO PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL, SYNTACTIC, AND SEMANTIC FEATURES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARE EMBEDDED WITHIN THE COURSE.
FOR STUDENTS OF 'DATA SCIENCE E GESTIONE DELL'INNOVAZIONE', THERE WILL BE TWO ADDITIONAL HOURS DEDICATED TO PROFESSIONAL ENGLISH FOR DATA SCIENCE.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS TAUGHT IN ENGLISH. LESSONS INCLUDE BOTH FRONTAL LESSONS AND DEBATES THAT REQUIRE STUDENTS TO USE ENGLISH FREQUENTLY TO THINK CRITICALLY AND TO PARTICIPATE ACTIVELY. LESSONS ALSO FEATURE WRITTEN AND ORAL EXERCISES AND ACTIVITIES THAT PIVOT ON COLLECTIVE BRAINSTORMING AND THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THEORETICAL REFLECTIONS. IN ADDITION TO ORAL PRODUCTION (E.G., PARTICIPATION IN DEBATES), THE STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO COMPLETE THREE TASKS WHICH ARE COMMUNICATED DURING THE COURSE AND ARE AVAILABLE ON TEAMS. COURSE ATTENDANCE IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED.
Verification of learning
THE FINAL ASSESSMENT IS AN ORAL EXAM THAT LASTS 20-25 MINUTES THAT EVALUATES STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL ENGLISH AND THE EXTENT TO WHICH STUDENTS CAN COMMUNICATE IN ENGLISH AT THE B2/C1 LEVEL. THE ORAL EXAM ALSO ASSESSES THE EXTENT TO WHICH STUDENTS HAVE ASSIMILATED THE COURSE CONTENT AND THE LEVEL OF ENGLISH OWNERSHIP THAT THEY EXHIBIT IN MAKING A (CONVINCING) ARGUMENT AND IN DISCUSSING BOTH THE MAIN THEMES OF THE COURSE AND THE THREE TASKS THAT THEY HAVE COMPLETED. THE PASSING GRADE RANGES FROM 18 (LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF CONTENTS) TO 30 LODE (THE CANDIDATE DEMONSTRATES SIGNIFICANT OWNERSHIP OF THE CONTENTS).
