The course aims to provide students with the theoretical knowledge in the field of methodology to consciously and critically analyse the social, economic and cultural contexts in which individuals live today. Within the scope of the teaching, the concepts underlying the methodology of social research that refer to the conduct of empirical investigations will be analysed. Among the objectives is the learning of research methods and techniques useful for studying the cultural contexts in which social phenomena take place. In particular, students will be provided with the basic tools for conducting empirical research, producing data analysis and critically analysing the results. Knowledge and ability to understand: the student will know how social research methodology can be a valid tool to analyse and study social phenomena, as well as the use of the main survey instruments of social research; he/she will understand the connection between sociological theories and empirical research; he/she will be able to distinguish the different applications of social research instruments in relation to the social phenomena to be studied. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the student will be able to read social phenomena and connect them to the theories and paradigms useful for explaining them; elaborate ways of studying and analysing social phenomena; empirically translate paths of analysis of social reality; choose the tools to be used in social research. Autonomy of judgement: the student will be able to critically read the social issues to be studied through the methodology of social research; to distinguish the methodologies of analysis of social phenomena; to choose the paths of analysis to study social phenomena; to select the different tools that can be applied in the methodology of social research. Communication skills: the student will be able to use the technical/scientific language of sociology in a professional context; convey the results of empirical research through graphs, tables and research reports. Learning skills: the student will be able to carry out reading of social phenomena and empirical research; understand and interpret specific texts on sociology, epistemology and methodology of social research. |

Verification of learning | |
---|---|
Learning will be tested by means of an examination aimed at assessing the students' knowledge and ability to understand the fundamental principles of the methodology and technique of social research, in line with the training objectives and the contents of the course. By means of the oral test, students will have to demonstrate their ability to transversally correlate the topics dealt with during the course of methodology and technique of social research and, where possible, connect them with the sociological subjects studied in the other subjects of the course. The ability to gather and interpret information considered useful for making autonomous judgements, including reflection on social and methodological issues, will also be tested, as well as the learning ability required to undertake any subsequent studies with a considerable degree of autonomy. Account will also be taken of both the expository capacity of the content and the ability to use language appropriate to the scientific community of social research methodology and technique. The examination will take the form of an oral interview and will be marked in thirtieths. Honours will be awarded to those who demonstrate, in addition to having learned the subjects of the course, critical capacity and mastery of the technical language of the subject. |
