EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO PROMOTE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROBLEMS INHERENT IN THE PERSON-SOCIETY RELATIONSHIP, PARTICULARLY IN THE DEFINITION OF EDUCATIONAL PROCESSES. SOCIETY IN PARTICULAR IN THE CONTEXT OF DEFINING EDUCATIONAL PROCESSES. APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - BY THE END OF THE LESSONS THE STUDENT WILL HAVE ACQUIRED A CRITICAL READING CAPACITY OF EDUCATIONAL PROCESSES SUCH AS TO BE ABLE TO DETERMINE THEIR ACTION IN THE TEACHING PROCESS. |

IN THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE, ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS SUCH AS ‘CULTURE’ AND ‘EDUCATION’, TRYING TO UNDERSTAND THEIR MEANINGS AND THE DIFFERENT WAYS IN WHICH THEY ARE USED. IT WILL THEN FOCUS ON THE MAIN THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES OF THE DISCIPLINE AND ON RELEVANT ISSUES IN THE CONTEMPORARY DEBATE. SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO SEVERAL CRUCIAL THEMATIC AREAS: - BODY: THE CONCEPT OF THE BODY WILL BE EXPLORED, NOT ONLY FROM A PHYSICAL BUT ALSO FROM A CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE, ANALYSING HOW BODIES ARE PERCEIVED AND TREATED IN VARIOUS EDUCATIONAL CONTEXTS. - INEQUALITIES: INEQUALITIES WILL BE ADDRESSED, INVESTIGATING HOW SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC INEQUALITIES AFFECT ACCESS TO EDUCATION AND LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. - COMMUNICATION: DIFFERENT MODES OF COMMUNICATION AND THEIR ROLE IN CULTURAL TRANSMISSION AND EDUCATIONAL PROCESSES WILL BE EXAMINED. - RELIGION: THE ROLE OF RELIGION IN EDUCATION AND CULTURAL PRACTICES WILL BE DISCUSSED, SEEKING TO UNDERSTAND HOW IT INFLUENCES THE FORMATION OF INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES. THE SECOND PART OF THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THE TRANSFORMATIONS IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EDUCATION AND SOCIETY. SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE THREE DIMENSIONS OF EDUCATION: FORMAL, NON-FORMAL AND INFORMAL, ANALYSING HOW THESE INTERACT AND INFLUENCE EACH OTHER AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE FORMATION OF INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES IN A CHANGING SOCIAL CONTEXT. |

THE SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION COURSE COMPRISES A TOTAL OF 48 HOURS OF FRONTAL CLASSROOM TEACHING. DURING THE LECTURES, THE PRESENTATION OF TOPICS WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY THE DISCUSSION OF EXAMPLES AND CASE STUDIES, TO FACILITATE THE UNDERSTANDING AND PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THE THEORETICAL CONCEPTS COVERED. COURSE ATTENDANCE IS NOT COMPULSORY, BUT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO ENSURE FULL UNDERSTANDING OF THE TOPICS COVERED AND EFFECTIVE ACQUISITION OF PRACTICAL SKILLS |
Verification of learning | |

THE STUDENT WILL BE ASSESSED DURING THE FINAL EXAMINATION, WHICH WILL BE HELD ON THE DATES OF THE EXAMINATIONS SCHEDULED BY THE DEPARTMENT. THE EXAMINATION WILL NOT INCLUDE INTERMEDIATE TESTS. THE FINAL EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF A WRITTEN TEST, WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF AN INTEGRATIVE ORAL PART ON THE CONTENT COVERED DURING THE LESSONS. THE WRITTEN TEST WILL LAST 60 MINUTES AND WILL INCLUDE MULTIPLE-CHOICE AND OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS IN ORDER TO COMPREHENSIVELY ASSESS UNDERSTANDING OF THE TOPICS DISCUSSED DURING THE COURSE. THE EVALUATION OF THE WRITTEN TEST WILL BE EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS. STUDENTS WISHING TO IMPROVE THEIR MARKS OR TO STUDY THE TOPICS IN GREATER DEPTH MAY OPT FOR AN ADDITIONAL ORAL INTERVIEW, WHICH WILL DEMONSTRATE A MORE IN-DEPTH AND ARTICULATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS COVERED. |
