Objectives
THE COURSE PROVIDES THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE FOR THE STUDY OF ASTROPHYSICAL SYSTEMS AT LARGE SCALE, E.G. THE CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE COURSE STARTS WITH THE CLASSIFICATION OF GALAXIES AND THE STUDY OF THEIR PHYSICAL PROPERTIES. PARTICULAR FOCUS IS GIVEN TO THE DESCRIPTION OF THE PHYSICAL MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR GALAXY FORMATION AND EVOLUTION.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENTS ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY TOOLS TO UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET OBSERVATIONS AND THE PHYSICAL MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OBSERVED PROPERTIES. THE ACQUIRED COMPETENCIES ALLOW AN IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO RESEARCH PROGRAMMES RELATED TO THE COURSE.
Prerequisites
BASICS OF SPECTROSCOPY AND PHOTOMETRY OF STARS AND GALAXIES.
Contents
CLASSIFICATION OF GALAXIES. STELLAR POPULATIONS AND CHEMICAL EVOLUTION. STATISTICAL PROPERTIES OF GALAXIES.
SCALING LAWS. INTERACTIONS OF GALAXIES AND PHYSICAL MECHANISMS IN THE TRANSFORMATION AND EVOLUTION OF
GALAXIES (INTERNAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL MECHANISMS). 6H
LARGE SCALE STRUCTURES, CLUSTERING. FORMATION AND STRUCTURE OF DARK MATTER HALOS. BARYONIC MATTER AND
DARK MATTER. GRAVITATIONAL LENSING. SUB-HALO MASS FUNCTION. 4H
