Objectives
THE COURSE HAS THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF PROVIDING THE STUDENT WITH THE GENERAL CONCEPTS AND THEORETICAL BASES OF THE MAIN INFECTIOUS DISEASES WITH THE RELATED IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS OF THE MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND BIOLOGICAL CYCLE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PATHOGENIC MICROORGANISMS OF MEDICAL INTEREST. FURTHERMORE, THE METHODS NECESSARY FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF INFECTIOUS AND PARASITIC DISEASES INCLUDING ZOONOSES WILL BE DESCRIBED.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - TEACHING AIMS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE:
- KNOWLEDGE OF THE MORPHOLOGICAL AND METABOLIC CHARACTERISTICS OF EACH MICROORGANISM (BACTERIUM, VIRUS, FUNGUS, PARASITE) RESPONSIBLE FOR DISEASES OF MICROBIAL ETIOLOGY.
- ABILITY TO COMPARE THE SIMILARITIES AND/OR DIFFERENCES IN ETIOPATHOGENESIS (MODE OF TRANSMISSION, EPIDEMIOLOGY AND CONTROL THROUGH PROPHYLAXIS AND THERAPY) OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- USE THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED TO BE ABLE TO FORMULATE A HYPOTHESIS OF MICROBIAL INFECTION.
- DEMONSTRATE THE ACQUISITION OF SPECIFIC TECHNICAL AND OPERATIONAL SKILLS IN THE VARIOUS DIAGNOSTIC SECTORS - BACTERIOLOGY, MYCOLOGY, VIROLOGY, PARASITOLOGY - FROM SAMPLING TO PROCESSING OF THE REPORT.

MAKING JUDGMENTS - AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- INDEPENDENTLY CHOOSE A DIAGNOSTIC METHOD SUITABLE FOR THE MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF AN INFECTION WITH A MICROBIAL ETIOLOGY, AS WELL AS THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL SUITABLE FOR THE IDENTIFICATION AND EVALUATION OF THE SENSITIVITY OR RESISTANCE PROFILE TO ANTIBIOTICS.
- RECOGNIZE THE APPROPRIATE PREVENTION MEASURES TO AVOID THE TRANSMISSION OF INFECTIONS AND THE THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES SUITABLE FOR THE TREATMENT OF THE MAIN INFECTIONS DISCUSSED IN THE COURSE.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS - AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
KNOWING HOW TO USE A SPECIALIZED VOCABULARY FOR THE CRITICAL PRESENTATION OF PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS TO SPECIALIST AND NON-SPECIALIST INTERLOCUTORS.

LEARNING ABILITY - AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
COLLECT, ANALYZE AND KEEP UP TO DATE ON THE MATTER BY CONSULTING ACCREDITED SOURCES AND DATABASES THAT DEAL WITH THE SPECIFIC MATTER AND THAT REPORT RECENT INFECTION CASES AND EPIDEMIOLOGICAL DATA.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS MUST HAVE THE BIOCHEMICAL FOUNDATIONS OF THE MAIN METABOLIC AND REPLICATIVE ACTIVITIES OF VIRUSES AND BACTERIA.
Contents
The teaching aims to enable students to acquire:
- Knowledge of the morphological and metabolic characteristics of each microorganism (bacterium, virus, fungus, parasite) responsible for diseases of microbial etiology.
- Ability to compare the similarities and/or differences in etiopathogenesis (mode of transmission, epidemiology and control through prophylaxis and therapy) of infectious diseases.
