Objectives
THE COURSE PROVIDES THE FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE TO UNDERSTAND THE FEATURES OF THE LATE MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY WORLD, PLACING ITS DECISIVE POLITICAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL PROCESSES IN A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE DATING BACK TO THE SECOND HALF OF THE 18TH CENTURY.
THE COURSE THUS AIMS TO FOSTER THE ACQUISITION OF THE KNOWLEDGE, CONCEPTUAL TOOLS, AND METHODS NECESSARY FOR THE CRITICAL UNDERSTANDING OF MAJOR HISTORICAL PROCESSES. THE MASTERY OF BASIC CHRONOLOGICAL, GEOGRAPHICAL AND CONCEPTUAL NOTIONS, THE COMMAND AND RIGOUR OF LANGUAGE, AND THE ABILITY TO ANALYSE AND SYNTHESISE WILL BE THE SUBJECT OF THE FINAL ASSESSMENT.
Prerequisites
A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC CHRONOLOGY AND SCHOOL CURRICULA OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY HISTORY.

THE COURSE PROVIDES A BASIC GROUNDING IN THE MAJOR PROCESSES OF POLITICAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL TRANSFORMATION THAT HAVE CHARACTERISED GLOBAL HISTORY FROM THE ATLANTIC REVOLUTIONS OF THE LATE 18TH CENTURY TO THE END OF THE COLD WAR. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE PROCESSES OF REORGANISATION, EXPANSION, CRISIS AND COLLAPSE OF EMPIRES, THE FORMATION AND GLOBAL SPREAD OF NEW POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES, MEMBERSHIPS, THE ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW STATES AND NATIONAL PROJECTS. WITHIN THIS FRAMEWORK, A SPECIFIC PART OF THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THE HISTORY OF 19TH-CENTURY ITALY, FROM THE REVOLUTIONARY AND NAPOLEONIC AGE TO NATIONAL UNIFICATION.

THE EXAMINATION TAKES PLACE ORALLY, WITH AN INTERVIEW LASTING APPROXIMATELY 20-30 MINUTES WITH OPEN QUESTIONS, AND AIMS TO ASSESS THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE FOLLOWING LEARNING OBJECTIVES: LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTENTS; ABILITY TO ARTICULATE A DISCOURSE, TO EXPOUND CLEARLY AND WITH APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE; ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND, TO CONTEXTUALISE HISTORICAL PROCESSES AND TO REFLECT CRITICALLY, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE INTERDEPENDENCIES BETWEEN POLITICS, ECONOMICS, SOCIETY, INSTITUTIONS AND CULTURE.
