THE COURSE PROVIDES ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL CONCEPTS TO UNDERSTAND THE MAJOR POLITICAL, CULTURAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATIONS FROM THE EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY REVOLUTIONS TO THE END OF THE COLD WAR. IN THIS WAY, THE COURSE AIMS TO GIVE STUDENTS A GOOD GRASP OF HISTORICAL PROCESSES AND THE MAIN INTERPRETATIVE MODELS OF THE CONTEMPORARY AGE IN A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE. |

THE COURSE DEALS WITH SOME OF THE MAIN HISTORICAL JUNCTURES OF THE LATE MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY AGE: THE FORMATION OF MODERN POLITICS AND NATION-STATES; THE EXPANSION, CRISES AND REORGANISATION PROCESSES OF IMPERIAL SYSTEMS; THE EMERGENCE OF MASS SOCIETY; ECONOMIC SYSTEMS AND GLOBALISATION PROCESSES; THE CHARACTERS OF THE GREAT IDEOLOGIES AND POLITICAL CONFLICTS; THE ROLE OF WAR, THE DYNAMICS AND POWER RELATIONS WITHIN THE INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM. SOME LECTURES WILL BE SPECIFICALLY DEVOTED TO ITALIAN HISTORY, HIGHLIGHTING ITS CONNECTIONS WITH BROADER GLOBAL SCENARIOS. |

FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION ON THE TWO TEXTBOOK VOLUMES AND THE CHOSEN MONOGRAPHS (SEE LIST BELOW). STUDENTS WHO ATTEND THE CLASS MAY CHOOSE GIVE A TALK ON ONE OF THE SELECTED BOOKS OR PAIRS OF BOOKS. THE MODALITIES OF THE TALK AND THE SELECTED BOOKS MUST BE AGREED IN ADVANCE WITH THE LECTURER. THE BOOK OR PAIR OF BOOKS PRESENTED IN THE TALK WILL NOT BE THE SUBJECT OF THE ORAL EXAMINATION.
