THE HUMAN ANATOMY I COURSE IS HELD DURING THE SECOND SEMESTER OF THE FIRST YEAR OF STUDIES AND CONSISTS OF 96 HOURS OF THEORETICAL LECTURES, EQUAL TO 8 UNIVERSITY CREDITS (CFU). THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH UNDERSTANDING OF THE OFFICIAL ANATOMICAL TERMINOLOGY USED IN THE DESCRIPTION OF THE HUMAN BODY STRUCTURE AND WITH ESSENTIAL THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE OF NORMAL HUMAN ANATOMY WITH THEIR RELEVANT MACROSCOPIC, MICROSCOPIC, FUNCTIONAL, TOPOGRAPHIC AND CLINICAL ASPECTS. STUDENTS WILL GAIN ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE ANATOMY OF HUMAN MOVEMENT AND HUMAN MORPHOLOGY AT THE MACROSCOPIC AND MICROSCOPIC LEVELS AND UNDERSTAND THE STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL CORRELATIONS BETWEEN THE ORGANS AND THEIR SYSTEMS AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF STRUCTURE ORGANIZATION. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO EXAMINE AND DESCRIBE THE NORMAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ORGANS AND TO DESCRIBE THEM USING THE CORRECT AND CURRENT STANDARDIZED ANATOMICAL TERMINOLOGY; ANALYZE THE STABILITY AND MOVEMENTS WITHIN THE SKELETAL AND MUSCULAR SYSTEMS; CORRELATE THE STRUCTURE OF THE ORGANS WITH THEIR FUNCTIONAL SPECIALIZATIONS AT THE MACROSCOPIC AND MICROSCOPIC LEVELS; DESCRIBE THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE ORGANS AND DISCUSS THEIR FUNCTIONAL, TOPOGRAPHIC AND CLINICAL ASPECTS. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE PASSED THE APPLIED BIOLOGY EXAM BEFORE TAKING THE ANATOMY I EXAM. |
Contents | |
---|---|
FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY OF HUMAN MOVEMENT (BONES, JOINTS, MUSCLES, SPINAL NERVES), GROSS ANATOMY (SITE, POSITION, SIZE, FORM, SURFACE PROJECTION, RELATIONSHIPS, BLOOD SUPPLY, LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE, INNERVATION AND FUNCTION) AND MICROSCOPIC ANATOMY (ORGAN STRUCTURE AT THE LEVEL OF TISSUES AND CELLS, AS OBSERVED IN LIGHT MICROSCOPY) OF THE FOLLOWING ORGANS OF DIFFERENT SYSTEMS: 1.SKELETAL SYSTEM – BONES AND JOINTS OF CRANIUM, VERTEBRAL COLUMN, THORACIC CAGE, UPPER LIMB AND LOWER LIMB 2.MUSCULAR SYSTEM – MUSCLES AND FASCIA OF HEAD, NECK, BACK, THORAX, ABDOMEN, SUPERIOR LIMB AND LOWER LIMB 3.CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM – BLOOD VESSELS, HEART, PULMONARY AND SYSTEMIC ARTERIES AND VEINS 4.LYMPHOID SYSTEM – LYMPHATIC VESSELS, PRIMARY AND SECONDARY LYMPHOID ORGANS, REGIONAL LYMPH NODES 5.RESPIRATORY SYSTEM – NASAL CAVITY, PHARYNX, LARYNX, TRACHEA, BRONCHI, LUNGS, PLEURA |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
WHOLE-CLASS LECTURES AND SMALL-GROUP SEMINARS (96 HOURS) WITH THE AID OF MULTIMEDIA TOOLS (IMAGES AND 3D RECONSTRUCTIONS, ANIMATIONS AND VIDEOS, VIRTUAL DISSECTION SOFTWARE) AND ANATOMICAL MODELS. THE SEMINARS WILL INCLUDE PROBLEM-BASED ANATOMY SESSIONS, DURING WHICH STUDENTS WILL BE PRESENTED WITH A SIMPLE CLINICAL CASE AND WILL HAVE TO ANSWER ANATOMY QUESTIONS RELEVANT TO CLINICAL PRACTICE. THE PLENARY DISCUSSION OF SUCH CASE STUDIES IN ANATOMY WILL ALLOW TO OPTIMIZE STUDENT LEARNING AND FOCUS IT ON THE PRACTICALLY AND CLINICALLY RELEVANT TOPICS. FREQUENTLY HELD FORMATIVE SELF-ASSESSMENTS WITH FEEDBACK WILL ALLOW TO MONITOR STUDENT PARTICIPATION AND PREPARATION DURING THE COURSE. |

THREE WRITTEN SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS WITH 30 MCQS WILL BE HELD DURING THE COURSE AND STUDENTS WILL GAIN 1 POINT FOR EVERY PASSED ASSESSMENT (MINIMUM SCORE 18/30) TO BE ADDED TO THE SCORE OF THE PASSED FINAL WRITTEN TEST. THESE ASSESSMENTS WILL BE FOLLOWED BY DISCUSSION OF THE ANSWERS AND THE COMMON ERRORS IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY THE MAIN DIFFICULTIES AND PROVIDE CUES FOR STUDY IMPROVEMENT. THE FINAL EXAM CONSISTS OF TWO PARTS: WRITTEN AND ORAL. THE WRITTEN EXAM IS COMPOSED OF 30 ITEMS, (MAINLY MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS AND FEW SHORT-ANSWER QUESTIONS). ONLY THE STUDENTS WHO HAVE PASSED THE WRITTEN TEST (MINIMUM SCORE 18/30) ARE ELIGIBLE TO TAKE THE ORAL EXAM. DURING THE ORAL EXAM, THE STUDENTS SHOULD DEMONSTRATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF THE OFFICIAL ANATOMICAL TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO USE IT FOR THE DISCUSSION OF THE FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY OF THE BONES, JOINTS, MUSCLES, PERIPHERAL NERVES AND GROSS AND MICROSCOPIC ANATOMY OF THE ORGANS OF THE CARDIOVASCULAR, LYMPHOID AND RESPIRATORY SYSTEMS, INCLUDING THE STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL CORRELATIONS BETWEEN THEM. THE ORAL EXAM IS PASSED IF THE SCORE REACHES AT LEAST 18/30. THE FINAL SCORE IS COMPOSED OF 20% OF THE WRITTEN AND 80% OF THE ORAL PART, WITH THE DISTINCTION GIVEN TO THE STUDENTS WHO OBTAINED THE MAXIMUM SCORE IN BOTH AND PASSED ALL THREE SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS DURING THE COURSE. |
