Objectives
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH UNDERSTANDING OF THE OFFICIAL ANATOMICAL TERMINOLOGY USED IN THE DESCRIPTION OF THE HUMAN BODY STRUCTURE AND WITH ESSENTIAL THEORETICO-PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE OF GROSS ANATOMY AND MICROSCOPIC ANATOMY WITH THEIR RELEVANT MORPHOFUNCTIONAL, TOPOGRAPHIC AND CLINICAL ASPECTS.

STUDENTS WILL GAIN ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF HUMAN MORPHOLOGY AT THE MACROSCOPIC AND MICROSCOPIC LEVELS AND UNDERSTAND THE CORRELATIONS BETWEEN THE ORGANS AND THEIR SYSTEMS AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF STRUCTURE ORGANIZATION AND STUDY.
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO EXAMINE AND DESCRIBE THE NORMAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ORGANS AND TO DESCRIBE THEM USING THE CORRECT AND CURRENT STANDARDIZED ANATOMICAL TERMINOLOGY. MOREOVER, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY ORGAN HISTOLOGICAL SECTIONS OBSERVED IN THE LIGHT MICROSCOPE AND TO CORRELATE THE ASPECT OF TISSUES AND CELLS WITH THEIR FUNCTIONAL SPECIALIZATIONS.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE PASSED THE HISTOLOGY AND EMBRYOLOGY AND THE ANATOMY I EXAMS BEFORE TAKING THE ANATOMY II EXAM. THE STUDENTS ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO BE SKILFUL IN USING A LIGHT MICROSCOPE.
Contents
GROSS ANATOMY (SITE, POSITION, SIZE, FORM, SURFACE PROJECTION, RELATIONSHIPS, BLOOD SUPPLY, LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE, INNERVATION AND FUNCTION) AND MICROSCOPIC ANATOMY (ORGAN STRUCTURE AT THE LEVEL OF TISSUES AND CELLS, AS OBSERVED IN LIGHT MICROSCOPY) OF THE FOLLOWING ORGANS OF DIFFERENT SYSTEMS:
1. DIGESTIVE SYSTEM - ORAL CAVITY, MAJOR SALIVARY GLANDS, PHARYNX, ESOPHAGUS, STOMACH, SMALL INTESTINE, LARGE INTESTINE, LIVER, EXTRAHEPATIC BILE DUCTS AND GALLBLADDER, PANCREAS; PERITONEUM
2. URINARY SYSTEM - KIDNEYS AND URINARY TRACTS
3. ENDOCRINE SYSTEM - HYPOTHALAMIC NEUROSECRETORY NUCLEI, HYPOPHYSIS, PINEAL GLAND, THYROID GLAND, PARATHYROID GLANDS, SUPRARENAL GLAND; DIFFUSE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
4. PERINEUM AND MALE AND FEMALE GENITAL SYSTEMS - INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL GENITALIA
5. CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM - MENINGES, SPINAL CORD, BRAIN, NERVE TRACTS; CRANIAL NERVES
Teaching Methods
LECTURES WITH THE AID OF MULTIMEDIA TOOLS (IMAGES AND 3D RECONSTRUCTIONS, VIRTUAL DISSECTION SOFTWARE) AND SMALL-GROUP ACTIVITIES WITH THE USE OF LIGHT MICROSCOPY. THE LECTURES WILL INCLUDE PROBLEM-BASED ANATOMY SESSIONS, DURING WHICH STUDENTS WILL BE PRESENTED WITH A SIMPLE CLINICAL CASE AND WILL HAVE TO ANSWER ANATOMY QUESTIONS RELEVANT TO CLINICAL PRACTICE. THE PLENARY DISCUSSION OF SUCH CASE STUDIES IN ANATOMY WILL ALLOW TO OPTIMIZE STUDENT LEARNING AND FOCUS IT ON THE PRACTICALLY AND CLINICALLY RELEVANT TOPICS. FREQUENTLY HELD FORMATIVE SELF-ASSESSMENTS WITH FEEDBACK WILL ALLOW TO MONITOR STUDENT PARTICIPATION AND PREPARATION DURING THE COURSE.
Verification of learning
THREE WRITTEN FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS WITH 30 MCQS WILL BE HELD DURING THE COURSE AND STUDENTS WILL GAIN 1 POINT FOR EVERY PASSED ASSESSMENT (MINIMUM SCORE 18/30) TO BE ADDED TO THE SCORE OF THE PASSED FINAL WRITTEN TEST. THESE ASSESSMENTS WILL BE FOLLOWED BY DISCUSSION OF THE ANSWERS AND THE COMMON ERRORS IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY THE MAIN DIFFICULTIES AND PROVIDE CUES FOR STUDY IMPROVEMENT.

THE FINAL EXAM CONSISTS OF TWO PARTS: WRITTEN AND ORAL. THE WRITTEN EXAM IS COMPOSED OF 30 ITEMS (MAINLY MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS AND FEW SHORT-ANSWER QUESTIONS). ONLY THE STUDENTS WHO HAVE PASSED THE WRITTEN TEST (MINIMUM SCORE 18/30) ARE ELIGIBLE TO TAKE THE ORAL EXAM. DURING THE ORAL EXAM, THE STUDENTS SHOULD DEMONSTRATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF THE OFFICIAL ANATOMICAL TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO USE IT FOR THE DISCUSSION OF THE GROSS AND MICROSCOPIC ANATOMY OF THE ORGANS OF THE DIGESTIVE, URINARY, ENDOCRINE, GENITAL AND CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEMS, INCLUDING THE STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL CORRELATIONS BETWEEN THEM. THE ORAL PART INCLUDES A PRACTICAL ACTIVITY CONSISTING IN THE IDENTIFICATION AND DESCRIPTION OF THE STRUCTURES IN THE HISTOLOGICAL SECTION OF AN ORGAN OBSERVED IN A LIGHT MICROSCOPE. THE ORAL EXAM IS PASSED IF THE SCORE REACHES AT LEAST 18/30. THE FINAL SCORE IS COMPOSED OF 20% OF THE WRITTEN AND 80% OF THE ORAL PART (ARITHMETICALLY APPROXIMATED TO A WHOLE NUMBER), WITH THE DISTINCTION GIVEN TO THE STUDENTS WHO OBTAINED THE MAXIMUM SCORE IN BOTH AND PASSED ALL THREE SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS DURING THE COURSE.
