Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE BROAD OUTLINES OF ROMAN HISTORY AND THE TOOLS TO UNDERSTAND THE MAIN ASPECTS OF ROMAN CIVILIZATION, FROM THE ARCHAIC AGE TO THE LATE ANTIQUITY.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT
-WILL KNOW THE MAJOR MOMENTS OF THE ROMAN HISTORY AND ITS POLITICAL, SOCIAL, AND INSTITUTIONAL EVOLUTION;
-WILL UNDERSTAND THE INTERLACEMENT BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS (POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, INSTITUTIONAL, AND CULTURAL) OF THE HISTORY OF ROME;
-WILL UNDERSTAND THE ROLE OF ROME IN THE GENERAL FRAMEWORK OF THE ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN WORLD AND IN THE SUBSEQUENT FORMATION OF THE EUROPEAN IDENTITY.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
-CONTEXTUALISE AND ANALYSE HISTORICAL FACTS AND THEIR SOURCES, DISTINGUISHING “HISTORY” FROM “HISTORIOGRAPHY”;
-USE PHYSICAL AND POLITICAL MAPS CONCERNING THE DIFFERENT PHASES OF ROMAN HISTORY;
-ELABORATE ORIGINAL APPROACHES TO HISTORICAL PROBLEMS OF ANCIENT ROME.

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
-RECOGNIZE THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF A MANUAL;
-APPLY THE HISTORICAL-CRITIC METHOD TO THE READING OF THE SOURCES;
-EXPRESS REASONED JUDGEMENTS ON FACTS AND PERSONALITIES OF ANCIENT ROME.

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
-USE THE SPECIFIC TERMINOLOGY OF THE DISCIPLINE;
-SHOW A GOOD COMMAND OF THE LANGUAGE;
-DISCUSS HISTORIC AND HISTORIOGRAPHICAL TOPICS WITH PERSONAL REFLECTIONS.

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE PROVIDES 60 HOURS OF DIDACTICS [12 CREDITS] WITH FACE-TO-FACE LECTURES. DIFFERENT TYPES OF TEACHING MATERIALS (ANCIENT HISTORIOGRAPHICAL SOURCES, EPIGRAPHICAL TEXTS, MAPS, COINS, ETC.) WILL BE PROJECTED AND ANALYSED DURING THE LECTURES AND MADE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS.

ORAL EXAM, AIMED AT ASSESSING: THE LEVEL OF LEARNING OF THE SUBJECT MATTER; THE ABILITY TO EXPOUND IN A CLEAR AND ORDERLY ARGUED MANNER THE TOPICS COVERED; THE OWNERSHIP OF THE TECHNICAL LANGUAGE SPECIFICALLY REQUIRED BY THE DISCIPLINE; THE ABILITY TO PLACE INDIVIDUAL HISTORICAL FACTS IN THEIR BROADER SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL CONTEXT.
