Objectives
THROUGH THE STUDY OF ANCIENT ROMAN HISTORIANS AND THEIR WORKS IN GREEK AND LATIN, THE COURSE AIMS TO INVESTIGATE THE LINKS BETWEEN HISTORIOGRAPHY AND POLITICAL DEBATE (DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL), THE VARIOUS HISTORIOGRAPHICAL SCHOOLS AND THEIR METHODOLOGY, AND THE MAIN LINES OF DEVELOPMENT OF ROMAN HISTORICAL THOUGHT.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT
-WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE MAIN STAGES OF THE METHODOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT OF ROMAN HISTORIOGRAPHY;
-WILL BE ABLE TO DISTINGUISH, IN ANCIENT SOURCES, BETWEEN HISTORICAL DATA AND APPLICATION OF HISTORIOGRAPHICAL MODELS.
-WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE POLITICAL-CULTURAL CONTEXTS IN WHICH TO PLACE THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BY HISTORIOGRAPHICAL SOURCES.

-CARRY OUT ORIGINAL RESEARCH ON TOPICS RELATED TO THE DISCIPLINE;
-ACT PROFESSIONALLY IN THE DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE WORLD OF WORK RELATED TO CLASSICAL STUDIES, INCLUDING RESEARCH ACTIVITY.

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE REASONED JUDGEMENTS ABOUT THE HISTORIANS OF ANCIENT ROME, THEIR METHODOLOGY, THEIR RELIABILITY.

Prerequisites
Knowledge of the broad outlines of Roman history.
Contents
Historians and historiographical trends of the Caesarian and Augustan age.
Teaching Methods
The course provides 30 of hours of didactics (6 credits) with face-to-face lectures. It aims to investigate the main themes of historiographic reflection in the age of the “Roman revolution” and their fortunes and evolution in the imperial age.
Verification of learning
Oral exam, aimed at assessing: the level of learning of the subject matter; the ability to expound in a clear and orderly argued manner the topics covered; the ownership of the technical language specifically required by the discipline.
